Google Play, Android ecosystem generated ₹4 lakh crore in revenue for Indian app publishers in 2024: Google
According to Google, the Indian ecosystem comprises the second largest number of active developers on Google Play across the world, contributing over 10 lakh developer jobs in 2024. Building compelling offerings on Android, this ecosystem has played an important role in shaping the impact and inclusiveness of India's digital economy.
Approximately 72% of surveyed Indian users claimed their first access to the internet was on an Android device; some 85% say their Android phone is one of the main ways they access digital public services, and 69% report first using AI through an app on their Android device. Device makers have also been able to make devices affordable due to the open-source nature of Android, which has assisted in estimated savings of ₹25,200 crore in development and operating costs.
At Google I/O Connect India 2025, an annual developer conference held in Bengaluru, Google announced new initiatives and AI capabilities to support the Indian developer and start-up ecosystem in the country. These included localising data processing of its high-performance thinking model Gemini 2.5 Flash, new Agentic AI tools in Firebase Studio, a new training programme with one of the world's leading gaming engine platforms – Unity, and collaborations with 3 India AI Mission start-ups in building innovative solutions toward the development of India's Make-in-India AI models.
Dr. Manish Gupta, Senior Director for India and APAC at Google DeepMind, who opened the event, said, 'Indian developers are writing the next chapter of India's success story, using AI capabilities to build real-world applications that are reaching millions of businesses and people across the country and the world.'
Preeti Lobana, Country Manager, Google India, who held a fireside chat with Subrata Mitra, Partner, Accel, on building enduring AI-driven companies during the event's opening keynote, said, 'India's developers are shaping how the world will use AI, and we're proud to stand with them. We're giving India the best tools, the most open platforms, and the strongest support to build boldly for the world, fostering a profound 'AI Productivity Leap' across businesses and start-ups.'
Google said it was closely partnering with BharatGen at IIT Bombay to build indigenous Indic language Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) models that would aim to make Gemma (a set of lightweight, generative artificial intelligence open models) more helpful in the Indic context, especially for historically underrepresented languages and governance applications.

Mixed reactions from Reddit users The post, shared by user @Grouchy-Leg1641, prompted several responses from fellow Redditors, many of whom offered their own perspectives and shared similar personal experiences. One Redditor empathised with his uncertainty, saying, 'You're already living a stable life. Moving now is a gamble, especially when the kids are in their teens.' Another added, 'Education might be better there, but will your kids adjust? Teenagers hate change.' One user noted, 'The exposure and opportunities in the US are unmatched. If you can afford it without stress, why not?' Another pointed out, '$150K in Dallas is a solid income. With your background and no existing loans, you'll still have stability.' Some questioned the necessity of the move altogether. 'Indian education is not bad if you guide your kids well,' one user said. Plan to develop Lucknow as India's 1st AI City gets ₹10,732-crore push
The state capital has received a corpus of ₹10,732 crore for developing the AI ecosystem under the IndiaAI Mission approved in March 2024. The move comes at a time when plans are afoot to develop Lucknow as the country's first AI City. According to the state government, this investment is 67% higher than any other technology infrastructure in the country. (FOR REPRESENTATION) The initiative is part of a major push to develop Uttar Pradesh as the new IT destination. The proposed investment is meant for 10,000 Graphics Processing Units, multi-modal language models and an AI innovation center. The state government will soon come up with the draft AI policy in line with Vision 2047. According to the state government, this investment is 67% higher than any other technology infrastructure in the country. Apart from this, a high-tech AI-based traffic management system is being proposed for Lucknow. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency, Varanasi, is already in the process of implementing an AI-enabled smart traffic system. Under the state government's flagship initiative, AI Pragya, over 10 lakh youths, teachers, gram pradhans, government employees, and farmers are being trained in AI, machine learning, data analytics and cybersecurity in partnership with tech giants like Microsoft, Intel, Google, and Guvi. The state government aims to train 1.5 lakh people every month, with industry-ready certifications part of the programme. AI-powered systems such as CCTV surveillance, facial recognition, number plate tracking, and SOS alert systems have been implemented in 17 municipal corporations and Gautam Buddh Nagar. These are directly integrated with the 112 helpline and police control rooms. Additionally, the 'Jarvis' AI monitoring system is active in 70 prisons, ensuring 24x7 surveillance of inmates. Under the UP Agris Project, 10 lakh farmers are being connected to AI-based technologies such as smart irrigation, drone mapping, pest detection, and digital market access. The initiative also involves 10,000 women's self-help groups as active partners. In the revenue department, satellite imaging and AI algorithms are being used for land consolidation and record management. This has enabled accurate digital mapping, transparent land distribution, and reduction of disputes. To protect mineral resources, 57 unmanned AI enabled check gates have been set up across 25 districts. Illegal mining is being monitored using RFID tags, geofencing, and AI camera-equipped weighbridges. In the healthcare sector, the country's first AI-based breast cancer screening centre has been established in Fatehpur, according to the state government.

Capex push: Nirmala Sitharaman calls it ‘primary driver of sustained growth'; says ‘we have to have capital expenditure grow'

She also underlined that the government will continue to rely on increased public capital expenditure as a major tool to drive development. Speaking at a book launch event in New Delhi, Sitharaman said, 'To maintain the growth is the topmost priority. Growth is the topmost, and therefore, it will have an overlap with how you create jobs…', as per news agency PTI. Her comments come at a time when India's economy is projected to grow at 6.5 per cent in FY25, the slowest pace in four years, down from 9.2 per cent growth in FY24. As per PTI, the Reserve Bank of India has trimmed its GDP growth forecast for the current financial year to 6.5 per cent, down from an earlier estimate of 6.7 per cent. The Economic Survey has pegged growth for FY26 in the range of 6.3 per cent to 6.8 per cent. The finance minister highlighted that capital investments by the government will continue to be central to economic momentum. 'Public investments have kept pace. It has been Prime Minister Narendra Modi's clear instruction that we have to have capital expenditure grow and grow significantly,' she said, adding that such investments are a 'primary driver of sustained economic growth'. Sitharaman also said that India must remain relevant globally and aim for a leadership role, especially by reshaping the voice of the Global South. At the same time, balancing domestic economic ambitions within the limits of fiscal responsibility is also a key area of focus, she noted. She further pointed to the government's efforts to attract more foreign investments, stressing the importance of a favourable FDI regime and highlighting the healthy competition among Indian states in luring global investors. On trade, Sitharaman indicated a shift towards bilateral deals over multilateral arrangements. 'We have seen bilateral agreements being signed in the last four to five years with Australia, UAE and the UK. Negotiations are progressing well with the United States as well as the European Union,' she said, as per PTI. Speaking on India's relations with China, she said that there were initial signs of improvement following external affairs minister S Jaishankar's recent visit. 'There is something, some kind of a beginning… how far it will go is something we will have to wait and see,' she remarked, while also stressing the need for 'a sense of caution'.
