Should Liquid I.V. be on Canadian concertgoers' must-pack list?
I love small indoor venues with regulated temperatures and assigned seats, but Kesha, Barenaked Ladies, Cyndi Lauper, Our Lady Peace and many other headliners this summer are at the very popular outdoor Budweiser Stage, located in Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario.

Toronto is having a very hot summer, so I appreciate Liquid I.V. 's messaging around proper hydration. The popular electrolyte drink mix (available on Amazon) first came to Canada in the summer of 2023 and went after the concertgoer and fitness community across the country.

I see two angles for consuming Liquid I.V. First, it's important to replenish electrolytes in hot and/or sweaty environments, and it's easy to do so with convenient packets of powder. Secondly, it's more fun to drink water when it tastes like a delicious treat. However, know what's in the packets before consuming them.

Liquid I.V. offers sugar-free and sugar-full variations (learn more about the sugar options); however, the former have yet to make it to Canada (Organika, a Canadian-made electrolytes powder, has a sugar-free option).

In terms of use and cost, Liquid I.V. packets are not cheap, but also not small. At over $2 per pack, the cost of the drink mix can add up if used frequently. However, it can also be a more affordable option compared to drinks at a concert venue. Just bring an empty reusable plastic bottle (some venues, including Budweiser Stage, often don't allow metal containers), Liquid I.V. and find a water fountain. Also, it's recommended to mix one pack of Liquid I.V. with two cups of water, but I prefer a more diluted taste and only use half the pack for two cups (the packets are easy to fold to save for later).

With a reusable plastic water bottle and a pack of Liquid I.V. in hand, I headed to the Kesha concert.

There was a Liquid I.V. pop-up at Budweiser, handing out samples. I've now tried most of the flavours and my favourite is the strawberry. As mentioned, I can appreciate the added benefits of Liquid I.V. compared to straight water, but would save it for super hot days (like the Kesha-concert day) or days when I'm exerting a lot of energy (like going for a long summer run or bike ride). I enjoyed having Liquid I.V. during the Kesha concert, as it was hot, crowded and sweaty, and I needed every excuse to stay hydrated so I could focus on the music.

Organizers promise affordable, Canadian focused event as Queen City Ex kicks off
The Queen City Ex kicked off on Wednesday. (Mick Favel / CTV News) The Queen City Ex (QCX) is now underway, and organizers are saying this year's event will be affordable, Canadian focused and an unforgettable time. With the addition of West Coast Amusements (WCA), the midway looks considerably different with a selection of rides new to QCX. 'This is a big step for us. We're excited to be here. We are going to do the best job we can. I'm very confident we're going to make a lot of people happy,' Rob Hauser, WCA's president said. Survey results from the 2024 QCX reported affordability as a major factor for attendees. Leading up to the 2025 QCX, pricing for attendees was a planning point for organizers, as well as still hosting a financially successful event. Cathleen Betker is the event manager of the QCX. She said months of number analysis went into making decisions for the fair. QCX The Queen City Ex kicked off on Wednesday. (Mick Favel / CTV News) 'Where we landed was kind of in a middle point where we can still achieve our revenue, but it's more approachable for the community,' she said. A public concern for several past QCX events has been the level of security on site. Metal detectors are returning at all entrances, as well as a visible police presence. 'We also do a lot of community outreach at events like this. We know a majority of our population is going to be here, so we want to be where the people are,' Sgt. Ross Kauk with the Regina Police Service said. For those not planning on going on the rides, there are a variety of foods to try and activities to attend indoors. An all-Canadian lineup of musical acts will also grace the stage each night, with Blue Rodeo scheduled to play on Wednesday evening.

JP Saxe pleads with fans to buy tickets, saying his shows are in jeopardy
JP Saxe is telling fans his upcoming concert tour may be cancelled due to slow ticket sales. The Grammy-nominated, Juno-winning Toronto singer-songwriter took to his social media platforms this week with a direct plea to listeners, offering insight into the touring economics for some musicians who aren't at the superstar heights of fame. Saxe is best known for his 2019 smash pop single If the World Was Ending with Julia Michaels and he's released a consistent flow of popular tracks since, including Hey Stupid, I Love You and I Don't Miss You. But he said earlier this week that if he didn't sell "20 or so thousand tickets" to his upcoming Make Yourself at Home tour within 48 hours, it'll likely be scrapped. "Forty-eight hours ... f--k being cool about it, I don't wanna cancel this shit," read the caption to his TikTok video, which has racked up 1.5 million views. The Instagram version has more than 10,000 likes. Saxe is currently scheduled to play more than 25 dates across North America, including stops in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. The ticket prices start at around $50, and are still currently on sale. He posted a second video on Tuesday, July 29, showing a crowd singing along to A Little Bit Yours with the message: "I thought it was impossible, but there's a chance you're saving this tour."
