Sword-wielding group attacks man, his friends in Mohali's Sector 70
A birthday celebration ended in bloodshed after a group attacked a man and his friends with swords in full public view near Jubilee Walk, Sector 70, late at night, police said on Monday.
The accused have been identified Manpreet Singh, a resident of Ferozepur and currently living in Kharar; Manik of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh; Vishal, and a woman named Lovely.
Manpreet and Manik have been arrested, and raids are underway for the other absconding accused, according to police.
The complainant, Gurpreet, a resident of Sector 66, told police that he and his friends were celebrating his brother's birthday past midnight on Friday.
After buying balloons from a vendor at the Phase 3B2 market, they were heading home, when a Ford Endeavour pulled up and one of the passengers allegedly hurled objectionable remarks at them.
When confronted, the group inside the car, including two women, initially backed off and apologised, possibly due to the presence of bystanders.
However, later, around 1.40 am, while Gurpreet and his friends were having dinner at Jubilee Walk, the same group returned with one more car, this time with more people.
Armed with sharp-edged weapons, including swords, the group launched a violent attack on Gurpreet and his friends, causing head injuries.
The victims were admitted to the civil hospital in Phase 6. Gurpreet filed a police complaint after getting discharged from the hospital.
Investigating officer Keuual Kumar said, 'We have arrested two accused and their absconding accomplices will also be nabbed soon.'
Police have booked the assailants under Sections 126(2), 115(2), 109, 191(3) and 190 of the BNS.

Mob vandalises police vehicles after Bhim Army chief ‘detained' in Prayagraj
A mob with alleged links to the Azad Samaj Party and Bhim Army on Sunday vandalised police vehicles in Prayagraj's Karchhana area after they came to know that the party's national president and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar was detained as he was not allowed to visit the family of a person who was murdered on April 13. The mob also pelted stones at police and shops and damaged private vehicles, setting two of them on fire, officials said. Twenty people were detained in connection with the incident, it is learnt. The situation was brought under control after additional police personnel were brought in and force was used to disperse the crowd. Though four personnel sustained minor injuries and are undergoing treatment, police claimed no one was seriously injured. A case is being registered under stringent provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the cost of the damage will be recovered from the accused, he said, adding that the National Security Act (NSA) will be invoked against those who incited the violence. Police cited law and order concern as the reason for not allowing Chandrashekhar and his associates to proceed to Isaut village to meet the victim's family. While police claimed the miscreants were supporters and workers of the Bhim Army and Azad Samaj Party, the party's state president, Sunil Kumar Chittod, denied the allegation. He said those involved in the violence were not party workers. 'It was a planned visit to two places. In the morning, the Prayagraj police detained our party chief at the Circuit House and did not allow him or others to proceed,' Chittod said. Chandrashekhar and others had planned to visit Isauta village in Prayagraj to meet the family of Devi Shankar, who was murdered on April 13. They also intended to visit neighbouring Kaushambi district to meet the family of a girl who was allegedly raped and murdered. According to police, a group of people gathered near Isauta village to receive Chandrashekhar and later blocked the road in protest, removed the barricades and began pelting stones at the police team.

Man stabs 10-year-old son to death in SW Delhi for asking to go outside to play
New Delhi: A 40-year-old man allegedly stabbed his 10-year-old son to death in south west Delhi's Sagarpur on Sunday after the child insisted on going out to play in the rain. The father, a daily wage labourer, lived with his four children in a one-room house after the death of his wife a few years ago; police said. The child's other siblings was present and witnessed their father stabbing their brother. According to police, they got a PCR call around 1.30pm from a hospital informing them that a child had been brought in with stab injuries allegedly inflicted by his father. "Police officers rushed to the hospital and found out that the boy had been brought to the hospital in that state by his father and was declared dead," a senior officer said. Police officers found out that the man lived with his children in Mohan Block of Sagarpur. Police said that the child was allegedly stabbed to death after he requested to go play outside. "The incident occurred when the child was at their rented home and insisted on going outside to play in the rain. His father objected to the idea, but the boy did not comply," a senior police officer said. "In a fit of rage, the father allegedly picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed the child in the chest in the left rib area. Thereafter, he immediately rushed the injured child to the hospital, but the victim could not survive," the officer added. The weapon used in the attack, a kitchen knife, has been recovered from the scene. A senior police officer said that the other children are being spoken to as part of the inquiry as the siblings was allegedly present inside the house at the time and witnessed the stabbing, police said. Further investigation is under way.

Maoist explosives unearthed in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharsawan
Saraikela, June 29 (UNI) In a breakthrough against left-wing extremism, security forces in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharsawan district uncovered a large cache of explosives hidden by CPI (Maoist) cadres in the forests of Gobargota Hills, an official said today. The seizure followed a joint operation launched after police received intelligence on June 28 about Maoist activity in Rajjama village under Kharsawan police station limits. Acting swiftly, a joint team comprising Kharsawan police, Special Execution Team (SET-01), and the 60th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducted an extensive search in the dense forest area. During the operation, the team located a cave in Gobargota Hill where Maoists had stored a variety of explosives intended to target security forces and disrupt anti-Naxal operations. The recovered items included 5 kilograms of white powder explosive, 29 can-type improvised explosive devices (IEDs) of various sizes, 500 electric detonators, nine bundles of commercial cordex wire, four bundles of electric wire of varying thickness, one kilogram of naphthalene balls, and 66 syringes. The explosives were safely destroyed on-site by the bomb disposal squad in view of public safety and operational risk. Following the recovery, an FIR was registered at Kharsawan police station under Case No. 49/25, dated 29 June 2025. Charges have been framed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Explosives Act, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), and the Criminal Law Amendment Act. Police have launched further investigation and intensified area surveillance to track down Maoist operatives linked to the explosives dump. Authorities believe the seizure is a significant blow to Maoist efforts in the region and underscores the continued vigilance of security forces in combating insurgency in Jharkhand's forested zones.
