Hibs start pre-season campaign with a goalless draw against MSV Duisburg

Hibs started their pre-season campaign with a goalless draw against MSV Duisburg in the Netherlands.
Chances were few and far between in the high temperatures.
Head coach David Gray used the opportunity as a good chance to get minutes into the legs of several players, with the likes of Jamie McGrath, Rafael Sallinger (pictured) making their first appearances for the Club – whilst Elie Youan also returned after missing a large part of the 2024/25 campaign through injury.
Academy youngsters, Dean Cleland, Lewis Gillie, Joseph McGrath, Logan Jimenez and Rory Whittaker all got important match minutes at First Team level.
The Hibees started the match with real intensity and purpose to their play.
There were good early touches from Lewis Gillie, Dean Cleland and Jacob MacIntyre who all look at ease stepping into the First Team.
The first real chance of the game fell to Cleland after a flowing counter-attacking move. MacIntyre linked up well with Chris Cadden, before Josh Campbell picked out Youan who pulled it back to Cleland, and his curling effort was tipped over the bar from the edge of the penalty area.
The German side settled and began to work their way back into the game, but did very little to trouble Raphael Sallinger in the opening 22 minutes before both teams paused for a water break due to the high temperatures in Wissel, Gelderland.
Duisburg best chance fell to striker, Tim Heike. But he dragged his shot wide of the far post.
Gray made two changes at the break, with Jordan Smith replacing Sallinger in goal and Jamie McGrath making his first appearance for the Club coming on for Campbell in the middle of the pitch.
Nicky Cadden went close to breaking the deadlock, but his whipped in free-kick evaded everyone in the penalty area .
At the other end Smith was called into action moments later – making a smart stop at his near post from Steffen Meuer.
On the hour mark, Gray continued to freshen things up with Joseph McGrath, Rory Whittaker, Logan Jimenez, Kanayo Megwa and Alasana Manneh all introduced to the action.
Chris Cadden, Nicky Cadden, Youan, Marvin Ekpiteta and Dylan Levitt were the players to make way.
O'Hora had an effort cleared off the line from a set-piece before Smith made a brilliant one-handed save, diving to his right to deny a long-range shot from Bookjans.
Cleland was played through on goal, and forced a good save from the Duisburg 'keeper.

Nicolas Kuhn is moving closer to the Celtic exit door after Italian media reported that Serie A side Como have struck a £16.5 million deal for the German forward. Respected transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano is claiming that all parties have agreed on a move for Kuhn, who was one of Celtic's most impressive performers last season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Como agree deal to sign Celtic forward Nicolas Kühn on permanent move,' Romano wrote on social media. 'Understand transfer fee will be €19m with medical tests to follow, personal terms also agreed in principle. Formal details being clarified and then all signed.' Celtic's Nicolas Kuhn is on the brink of joining Como in Italy. | SNS Group Kuhn, 25, joined Celtic from Austria Vienna in January last year and after a slow start to his career in Glasgow, he showed excellent form in the 2024/25 campaign, scoring 21 goals and providing 15 assists in 51 matches across all competitions. Numerous clubs across European football have shown an interest in Kuhn over the past six months, especially after scoring against RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich in the Champions League, but it is Como - who are managed by Cesc Fabregas and finished tenth in the Italian top flight - who appear set to now win his signature. Significant Celtic profit A sale of £16.5m would represent a significant profit on Kuhn for Celtic, who they bought from Austria Vienna 18 months ago for a fee in the region of £3m. Former NHL drafted netminder joins Belfast Giants with sights set on continuing upward trajectory

The 25-year-old German-born Canadian joins Jackson Whistle on the roster for the team's double defence having moved from German side Adler Mannheim, giving head coach Adam Keefe a pair of outstanding goaltenders to select from. While Whistle has proven himself to be capable of carrying the team to an Elite League title, being named the Giants' MVP last season in helping them win a League and Challenge Cup double thanks to a superb .928 save percentage, Gravel comes in with an excellent reputation. The Berlin-born netminder was not only drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Blackhawks but has won scores of individual awards during his career, including being named Outstanding Goaltender and to the First All-Star Team at the 2019 CHL Memorial Cup with the Halifax Mooseheads. As the Giants always look for during the off-season, Gravel also brings plenty of winning experience on the ice, too, having claimed gold with Canada at the 2018 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup and the 2022 University Cup with the University of Québec-Trois-Rivières. The latter of those achievements, coming in the first of three years with the Patriotes which saw him win silver in the University Cup in 2024, was accompanied by more individual recognition as Gravel was named the competition's Most Valuable Player, and he would rack up two more Second All-Star Team awards in his following two seasons. And he has since translated that into the professional sphere, returning to the full-time ranks last season – he had a brief stop with the Allen Americans in 2021 – with the ECHL's Orlando Solar Bears and excelled, putting up a .927 save percentage in 23 games and earning himself a brief loan spell with the AHL's Belleville Senators. His season would end in Mannheim, where he was signed to provide backup to now Dallas Stars goaltender Arno Tiefensee and veteran Felix Brückmann for the Deutsche Eishockey Liga Play-Offs, but he would make just two appearances for the Eagles. Now, however, he will look to win the battle for the starter's jersey out of training camp with Whistle ahead of their Champions League tilt, starting with a meeting with Finnish champions KalPa on August 28, but, regardless of who does come out on top, the Giants look very well-served at netminder. 'I'm really excited to be joining the Giants. I've heard great things about the club, the city, and especially the fanbase. Playing in Belfast is a great opportunity to continue developing my game and to compete for championships. I can't wait to get started,' commented Gravel. Keefe added: 'Alexis is a big young goalie with a bright future. He has played in some very big games throughout his career and has consistently risen to the challenge. He is an extremely competitive individual who wants to win. "He had a great first year pro last season, and we think he is only going to continue to get better. We are excited to bring him to Belfast.'

Jurgen Klopp 'heartbroken' as ex-Liverpool boss pays tribute to Diogo Jota

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he has been left "heartbroken" after the death of Diogo Jota at the age of 28. Jota passed away alongside his brother André in a car accident in Spain. Klopp was the manager who signed Jota for Liverpool from Wolves in a £45million deal in September 2020. And the German head coach helped develop the Portuguese forward into an excellent player at Anfield. Jota and his brother were involved in a car at around 00:30 local time on the A52 road near the city of Zamora, close to the Portuguese border. He died just days after getting married. Klopp wrote on Instagram: "This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can't see it! "I'm heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André. Diogo was a not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much! "All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace - Love J".
