Panna, a housewife, had been admitted to Kiran Hospital on April 12 after complaining of a severe headache. Doctors diagnosed a brain haemorrhage, and though she underwent two surgeries, she was later declared brain dead. A 34-year-old man from Surat received a lung, while a 42-year-old patient in Mumbai underwent a liver transplant. Two Surat residents — a 38-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man — were given kidneys. A 43-year-old woman from Surat received a hand transplant, and two corneas restored the vision of a 40-year-old woman from Hyderabad and a 62-year-old man.
In a remarkable feat, all of Panna's organs were harvested and successfully transplanted into recipients on the same day at Kiran Hospital. "The eligible recipients were promptly admitted once the organs became available, and the transplants were carried out in a short span by multiple teams of doctors," the hospital is authorised to perform transplants of various organs, said Mathur Savani, chairman of Kiran Hospital.

"The transplant was completed quickly, saving both time and costs," said Dr. Mehul Panchal, Director at Kiran Hospital.

Kidney ailments top list of treatments under Aarogyasri

The scheme aims to provide accessible healthcare to families living below the poverty line (BPL). Following kidney treatments, the highest number of cases were for cancer (1,90,447), polytrauma (88,117), urinary surgeries (81,982) and general medicine (81,611). Hyderabad topped the list with over 1.25 lakh patient cases, followed by Rangareddy (68,343 cases), Nalgonda (59,071) and Medchal-Malkajgiri (52,359 cases). With the annual treatment cap doubled from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh per family, officials said the enhancement enabled access to high-cost secondary and tertiary interventions, reducing out-of-pocket expenses and allowing procedures that were previously financially out of reach. This, the officials say, brought the number of procedures covered under the scheme to 1,835, including 163 advanced treatments, and also led to an increase in package rates for 1,375 such procedures by 25%. These rates were last fixed in 2012 and have not been revised since then. "The majority of these 108 hospitals in the network are located outside Hyderabad. This has increased access to specialised care closer to patients' homes, particularly in backward areas, and reduced travel time and delays in treatment. Moreover, the number of BPL families under the scheme also significantly increased in this time period," said another official of the RAHCT. Meanwhile, a total of ₹1,590 to the network of hospitals over the last 20 months was also cleared.

Carcinogens: ICMR to study samples
New Delhi: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) submitted a reply to the National Green Tribunal stating that it will soon initiate a study by collecting blood and urine samples of drivers to evaluate whether chemical compounds called TCEP, TCIPP and TDCIPP found in flame retardants materials used in the cars are potentially carcinogenic. The response comes in the wake of a study published in journal Environmental Science and Technology saying that cars have flame retardant chemicals considered potentially carcinogenic. The study was concerned about Tris (1-chloro-isopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP), Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) and Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP). Of these, ICMR has already recognised TCEP as a carcinogen. A bench headed by NGT chairman, justice Prakash Shrivastava, had sought details about the matter. Responding on July 22, ICMR said it intends to test 360 professional drivers by collecting their urine and blood sample to test for presence of the chemical compounds. The study could take at least 18 months. Earlier in May, an ICMR report referred to several leading international agencies, including the International Agency for Research on Cancer under the World Health Organization and environment and toxicology institutes in the US and Europe having published systematic reviews identifying carcinogenic chemicals in flame retardants used in motor cars to which humans may be exposed through ingestion, inhalation or skin contact. The report said that only one of the compounds, namely TCEP, appeared on the list of potential carcinogens, while others did not. In response, NGT had requested a more detailed analysis of the compounds.

7 women pregnant after free IVF treatment at GMC
Panaji: Seven women who received free IVF treatment at GMC's Centre for Assisted Reproductive Treatment (ART) are currently pregnant. The centre operates under an MoU signed between the public health dept, GMC, and Dr Kedar's Maternity, Infertility, and Surgical Hospital (Subunit: Goa IVF Centre) in Panaji. Nine women who underwent the IVF treatment at the GMC's super specialty block have successfully delivered to date. The centre has 316 persons registered for ART and has performed 104 IVF procedures on 69 patients to date. The centre has also performed 403 IUI procedures on 172 patients. The cost per IVF case is around Rs 1.37 lakh, health minister Vishwajit Rane said in a written reply in the assembly. This includes Rs 1 lakh for injections for ovarian hyperstimulation, Rs 8,000 for medicines after OPU and embryo transfer, Rs 7,000 for IVF media and Rs 12,000 for IVF consumables. As per the MoU between the GMC's public health department and Dr Kedar's Maternity, Infertility, and Surgical Hospital, Panaji, Goa, Dr Kedarnath Padte and his team of anaesthetists, embryologists and support staff provide their services at the Centre for ART, SSB, GMC. In May, the centre reported the birth of triplets to a mother, the first of its kind at the facility.
