Love for Malayalam literature motivates 70-year-old's return to world of letters

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bhageerathi Amma was 105 years old and Karthyayani Amma was 96 when they became poster women of the state's literacy movement by passing its examinations with top marks. Their stories have inspired many elderly persons in the state to return to the world of letters after decades. Chandramani C is one such senior citizen. At the age of 70, she has passed the Class X and also the Class XII equivalency exams with flying colours and going a step further, has also found wings to her literary ambitions. A native of Mampazhakkara in Neyyatinkara taluk of Thiruvananthapuram, Chandramani came to know of the State Literacy Mission's Class X equivalency programme five years ago through her former ward councilor Jaya Dali. Though hesitant at first, it was the firm backing of her husband Sudarshanan K, a daily wage labourer, that prompted the reticent homemaker to give it another try at academics. 'I failed in my SSLC exam when I was 15. This was soon after my mother's death. In those days, failure in Class X exam means a full stop to your academic dreams,' Chandramani said. Her love for Malayalam literature and stories of veterans like Bhageerathi Amma and Karthyayani Amma ignited the fire within her to study again. Though taunted occasionally by members of her age group, Chandramani did not step back.

DU admission starts with changes in eligibility and tiebreaker criteria

New Delhi: Delhi University (DU) on Tuesday kicked off its admission process for the 2025-26 academic year with the launch of its Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal. In a notable change to the undergraduate admission process, Class X board marks will now be used as an additional tiebreaker in cases where candidates have the same CUET scores and Class XII marks. DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh said that several modifications were made to the admission process this year, drawing on lessons from previous years. The upgraded admission portal now features a direct auto-accept mode to ensure that no applicant misses out on seat allotment. According to DU's dean of admissions, Haneet Gandhi, the second phase of the process will begin once CUET results are announced. Admissions to regular colleges will be based on CUET scores. For the coming academic year, the university is offering 79 undergraduate programmes across 69 colleges to a total of 71,624 seats. The academic session is scheduled to start on Aug 1, Singh added. Gandhi said that in response to changes in the subject list introduced by the National Testing Agency this year, DU has revised its eligibility criteria for most programmes. Many now offer dual eligibility options — candidates may choose one language and three subjects, or two languages and two subjects. The combination yielding the best score will be considered. Additionally, the previous requirement of securing at least 30% marks in languages in CUET for BSc (Hons) programmes has been removed. Talking about the CUET system, Singh said: "The representation of students from many states has increased in DU. Now, students from small towns and state boards are also coming forward to seek admission here." The university has also begun admissions for a range of skill-based programmes offered through its Centre for Innovative Skill-Based Courses. The undergraduate admission process will be conducted in two phases. In addition to undergraduate offerings, the university has launched two new postgraduate programmes — MA in tourism management and MA in Hindi journalism this year. Singh announced that the university is also planning to introduce an MA journalism programme under the English department. "It is still in the planning stage, and we are working out the modalities," he said. The launch marks the beginning of admissions not only for undergraduate courses but also for postgraduate, five-year law, BTech, PhD and School of Open Learning (SOL) programmes. Alongside, the portals for registration in five-year integrated law and BTech programmes have been activated, and the allocation-cum-admission process has commenced for several postgraduate courses. For postgraduate programmes, Singh announced the introduction of an additional quota for single-girl child applicants, with one seat reserved in each programme — a provision already present in undergraduate admissions. This year, DU is offering admissions to 82 postgraduate programmes, with a total of 13,432 seats, including those under NCWEB. So far, 53,609 candidates have registered. The registration portal for postgraduate programmes in the School of Open Learning has also been launched. According to SOL director Payal Mago, admissions to most PG programmes will be based on CUET scores. If seats remain vacant, they will be filled through a merit-based system. However, admissions to MBA, BLISc, MLISc, and PGDADLM programmes will continue without CUET. To assist applicants, DU's admission branch has set up nine telephone helplines, an email facility, and a Chatbot service to address queries related to the admission process.

Slain Beed sarpanch's daughter cracks NEET, Ajit Pawar calls her, ‘inspiration for new generation'

Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Sunday praised the NEET success of Vaibhavi Deshmukh, daughter of slain Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, calling her achievement 'more than just academic,' and an example of courage and determination in the face of tragedy. Santosh Deshmukh was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered on December 9, 2023, in a case that sparked a political storm across Maharashtra. Despite the trauma, Vaibhavi not only passed her Class XII exams but also cleared the highly competitive National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) entrance test for medical admissions. Ajit Pawar, who is also the guardian minister of Beed district, shared a post on X, he wrote, 'Her journey is about unwavering determination in the face of adversity and is sure an inspiration for the new generation.' 'Vaibhavi's success cannot be measured by marks alone. Despite enduring personal hardships and battling extremely challenging circumstances, she refused to be discouraged or lose focus. Channelling her grief into grit, she persevered with discipline, dedication, and clarity of purpose to pursue and realize her dream of a career in medicine,' Pawar said in his post. He also noted that Vaibhavi never gave up even after losing her father under such difficult circumstances. Santosh Deshmukh, a Maratha, was allegedly killed for opposing an extortion racket linked to an energy firm. Valmik Karad, a close associate of Dhananjay Munde—then a minister and member of Ajit Pawar's NCP—was among those arrested. The accused were charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The incident triggered a political fallout, with Munde stepping down from his post after severe criticism from both the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi and allies within the ruling Mahayuti. The case also reignited caste tensions, as most of the accused were from the Vanjari community. The murder turned Beed into a flashpoint in the ongoing debate around law and order in Maharashtra, but Vaibhavi's achievement has now offered a story of hope and resilience emerging from tragedy.
