The St. Louis Cardinals have been surprisingly competitive this year, sitting at 43-36, which is good for 3.5 games back of first in the NL Central and in tied for the last wild card.

However, as June ends and July trade rumors begin to percolate, the rumors of a Nolan Arenado trade have not cooled even as the weather has spiked.
Arenado was linked to the Yankees nearly the entirety of this offseason. As the Yankees' need for an everyday third baseman has grown, these rumors have reached a feverish pitch.
ESPN's Jeff Passan proposed the Yankees as a fit for Arenado and another former St. Louis all-star, so why not get greedy and propose a package?

Passan gave Arenado and Helsley each a 30% chance of being traded, which would mean 9% odds of both being traded (basic mathematics skills are helpful here).

The Yankees need bullpen depth, and Helsley has the track record (49 saves in 2024) but his WHIP has gone up to 1.44 from 1.10 and his barrel percentage has climbed from 3.7% to 6.8% from 2024 to 2025, according to Baseball Savant.
As a result, Helsley might be cheaper now than ever. How about this hypothetical trade proposal:
Yankees get: INF Nolan Arenado, RHP Ryan Helsley
Cardinals get: OF Jasson Dominguez, INF Oswaldo Cabrera, RHP Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz (NYY No. 6), $37 million in cash considerations for Arenado's contract.
Arenado is owed $52 million from the Cardinals, and by trading him to the Yankees, in this scenario, the Yankees would cover the remainder of Arenado's 2025/2026 salary.

In addition to the cash, the Cardinals get Dominguez, a former No. 1 prospect who would be a young bat to alleviate the Cardinals' reliance on Jordan Walker for everyday reps.
The Cardinals wouldn't get Cabrera until at least September as he recovers from ankle surgery, and Rodriguez-Cruz (acquired in the Carlos Narvaez-Boston trade) is promising, but would likely not make the big league roster until 2027.,
If the Cardinals value a longer window for contention instead of hanging onto assets like Arenado and Helsley who would help them win now, then this trade would prove advantageous over time.
On the other side, the Yankees get one of the best everyday third basemen in baseball and another high-octane arm to loosen the burden on potential question marks like Ian Hamilton and Mark Leiter Jr as they look to finally win their 28th ring.

Yes, it was the Eagles; in fact, it was the last of Philadelphia's four consecutive NFC East titles. Strange as it sounds, it's true, no NFC East team has repeated since. Sheehan pointed out that four writers covering the four NFC East teams had a dialogue/story this week discussing the NFC East in 2025. John Keim, Washington's ESPN beat reporter, predicted that the Eagles will break the string and win the division. Keim did point out that the Commanders do have the quarterback to threaten the Eagles, but remaining objective, had to admit what we all know is the major question mark for Washington in 2025. The best Cowboy is Micah Parsons, and they drafted a highly regarded pass rusher and signed former Commanders edge rusher Dante Fowler. The Giants will be very strong on the defensive line. Their defense has been good, and they added Abdul Carter (EDGE) in the draft. Can Russell Wilson bring them steady play at quarterback? If Wilson doesn't get the job done, will Jameis Winston prove to be adequate? Or, do the Giants turn to rookie Jaxson Dart? Receiver Malik Nabers (LSU) exhibited enough last season to prove he is the real deal. The Eagles have stud defensive tackles, the best linebacker in the division, the best running back, the best offensive line and perhaps the best duo of wide receivers. They ran the ball down Washington's throat in the NFC Championship game and entirely dominated the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
