What Is Ragging?
Ragging is not limited to physical harassment. It covers a wide range of actions-verbal, emotional, and psychological-that cause discomfort, fear, or humiliation to a student.
Here's what's ragging:
Mockery or Insult: If any student, through spoken or written words or actions, insults, mocks, or behaves inappropriately with a new or fellow student, it amounts to ragging.
Forced Actions: Asking a student to perform acts they are not comfortable with-or wouldn't ordinarily do-that result in shame, pain, or emotional distress is considered ragging.
Intimidation or Threats: Any disorderly or undisciplined activity that causes inconvenience, fear, physical or mental harm to another student also falls under ragging.
Disruption of Academic Activities: If a senior student's behaviour hampers the academic routine or learning of another student, that too qualifies as ragging.
UGC's Message: Zero tolerance, full compliance
The UGC mandates every institution to implement its 2009 Anti-Ragging Regulation in both letter and spirit. This includes obtaining online undertakings from all students and submitting an institutional compliance report at the beginning of every academic year.
The UGC has already begun issuing show cause notices to defaulting institutions.

Ahmedabad: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police took custody of Birju Salla, a Mumbai-based businessman previously convicted in a hijack threat case, from the Ahmedabad city crime branch on Thursday morning. The action follows his arrest in a multi-crore cheating case involving a jewellery businessman in Mumbai. According to crime branch officials, Salla was arrested on Wednesday from a five-star hotel on Ashram Road where he checked in under a false identity. He was wanted in connection with a Rs 12.77 crore jewellery fraud registered by the EOW of Mumbai police. Soon after his arrest, a Mumbai police team arrived in Ahmedabad and formally took over his custody for further investigation. Salla is already under scrutiny in two separate threat note cases — one involving a bomb threat on an IndiGo flight from Ahmedabad to Jeddah in Nov 2024, and another targeting the Ahmedabad airport in Jan this year. He gained notoriety in 2017 after planting a hijack threat note on a Jet Airways flight and was the first person to be booked under the stringent Anti-Hijacking Act, 2016. NMC blacklists senior doctor arrested by CBI on bribery charges
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has blacklisted a senior doctor working as an assessor, who allegedly received a bribe of ₹10 lakh in exchange for a positive assessment report to Jawaharalal Nehru Medical College of KLE Society, Belagavi. He was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in this case. The NMC also decided that the renewal of the existing number of seats of the college in under-graduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses will not be done for the academic year 2025-26. 'Furthermore, the application for increase of seats and starting of new courses for both UG and PG received by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) for the year 2025-26 shall be cancelled and not processed further,' it stated. The CBI arrested a senior doctor and Head of Department, Anatomy, at Murshidabad Medical College, working as an assessor with the NMC, after he allegedly received a bribe in exchange for a positive report to Jawaharalal Nehru Medical College in May 2025. An FIR in this regard was lodged by the CBI against some of the assessors, college authorities, and unknown persons. The matter is currently under investigation. In its clarification, the NMC said that senior faculty members from various government medical colleges across the country volunteer to conduct periodic inspections in medical institutions on behalf of the Commission. 'As such, the assessors are not employed by the Commission, but are pooled in from nation-wide government medical colleges and assigned for inspections through a randomisation process,' it stated. The Commission has a no tolerance policy towards corruption, and any such untoward incident by any person or medical institution is being dealt by the Commission as per relevant penal provisions of the NMC Act and the regulations made therein under, it added. B.L. Sujatha Rathod, Director, Directorate of Medical Education, said, 'We have not received any official information or order from the NMC regarding this incident. Appropriate action will be taken against the college as soon as the information is received.'

Removing IEDs top priority of security forces in Saranda: IG
Ranchi: Improvised explosive devices (IED) have emerged as the biggest challenge to security forces involved in anti-Maoist operations in the forest areas of Saranda and other parts of West Singhbhum. With the toll and injuries caused by IED blasts rising, police have launched special operations to detect and seize the devices. Police said it seized 41 IEDs, 4,000kg explosives, 18,000 detonators, and 34 gelatine sticks from different parts of the district in the past three months in the special search operations. Among the seized materials is 3,811kg explosives, which were a part of the 5,000kg looted from Odisha's Sundargarh on May 27. IG (South Chhotanagpur) Manoj Kaushik said, "The recovery of IEDs has become the top priority of security forces in the district. The looted explosives in Sundargarh were prime materials which could have been converted into IEDs by merely inserting detonators. The existence of large cache of explosives with Maoists is a major threat to safety of police personnel." "IEDs slowed down our operations in the past few months. Civilians are also becoming targets," he said. CRPF sub-inspector Sunil Kumar Mandal and assistant sub-inspector Satyawan Kumar Singh were martyred while six personnel were injured in IED blasts triggered by Maoists in Saranda this year. Saranda forest and its adjoining areas remain the last Maoist bastion in the state. Key Maoist leaders, including politburo member Misir Besra and central committee member Anal are hiding in the area.
