This refers to the editorial 'Politicians wreaking havoc should be duly punished' (THI July 10). Sadly, Maharashtra is witnessing political highhandedness of Shiv Sena and MNS workers, who are indulging in needless violence either in the name of 'Marathi' language or in the process of intimidating innocent people from other states. The over-focus by the MNS to teach Marathi to others is unnecessary and unwarranted. Its MLA slapping and punching a non-local in the MLA canteen over the quality of 'dal' served there, has brought the reputation of the Shiv Sena and MNS combine several notches down in the public eye. The wanton vandalism of the toll booth showed the rowdy and uncouth behaviour of the opposition in Maharashtra in dismal light; and the government must take to task these lawbreakers so that they would not dare to repeat such acts again.

Publicly humiliate all law-breaking leaders
Politicians displaying a troubling disregard for constitutional norms and democratic principles is not only condemnable but is also indicative of a larger political conspiracy due to its inability to reconcile with failures. Recently, the way MNS members are resorting to violence in the name of linguistic pride in an increasingly polarised and identity-driven political climate is deplorable. Similarly, politicians taking law into their lands at the drop of a hat and going on a rampage on a false notion is dangerous. It is time to draw a line and unequivocally warn people triggering mob frenzy. Strict action should include arrests, fast-track trials and publicly damning the perpetrators. The courts, police and civil society must unite in ensuring this does not spiral into another round of violence. Only then, can hate violence and mob violence on one pretext or the other can be put to an end

Mandate semi-circular layout of classrooms
It is commendable that some schools in Kerala have given up the traditional row-based seating arrangement in favour of a semi-circular layout in classrooms inspired by Vinesh Viswanath's debut Malayalam film Sthanarthi Sreekuttan. The film portrays school life in a rural setting in Kerala. The time has indeed come to actualise the idea of semi-circular configuration of classrooms to foster friendship and fellowship among students. This innovative adaptation would de-congest the classroom, create a more congenial atmosphere for interaction and learning and enable schools to do without pigeonholing students as 'frontbenchers', 'middle benchers' and 'backbenchers' and students to imbibe the spirit of equality and companionship and camaraderie and value cooperation more than competition. Further, it would do away with getting seats depending on height or supposed brilliance or based on names in alphabetical order. In the new classroom configuration, all students get the teacher's attention in equal measure and no student feels neglected. From now onwards, the governments and private school managements would do well to design and build new schools, keeping in mind creation of enough space for the semi-circular layout of classrooms.

Identify Nipah cases on urgent basis
Patients recovering from Nipah infection, which has become endemic in north Kerala, have been disease-free and without post-infection sequelae thus far. However, two persons continue to be bed-bound in a vegetative state, as an aftermath of Nipah encephalitis. This has cast a gloom on Nipah survivors and is worrying healthcare providers. The unfavourable long-term effect of the infection renders the identification of the source of the dreaded viral infection even more crucial.

No way to treat history-making women cricketers
India's women's cricket team has just made history by winning their first T20 series in England. Alas, what has been the nation's reaction? A passing cheer. Had it been the men's team, headlines would scream the achievement and there would be celebrations on the streets. Why must women work twice as hard for half the recognition? This win isn't just about cricket—it's about respect, equality, and breaking old patterns. The question is: will sponsors and fans now stand behind them—or simply scroll past? If victory abroad doesn't earn lasting support at home, what will? Let's not just clap today. Let's commit to change. Because real progress isn't in trophies—it's in the way we value them.

Anil Parab says Yogesh Kadam surrendered bar's orchestra license after allegations, demands his resignation
Shiv Sena UBT MLC Anil Parab on Friday claimed that an orchestra license of a bar held in the name of Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam's family member was surrendered and termed the move as an 'admission of guilt' by Kadam family and demanded the minister's removal from the state cabinet. Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Parab alleged that the Savali Bar, located in Kandivali, was being operated illegally by Kadam's family and had been raided by police in 2023 and again earlier this year. He claimed that police reports and documents, which have been obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) Act, indicated that the bar was the site of obscene performances and money being thrown at dancers, in violation of licensing norms. 'They have surrendered the license to the government, but that cannot absolve the minister of the charge that his family ran a dance bar,' Parab said. 'Surrendering the license is an admission of guilt,' he added. Kadam, who belongs to the Shiv Sena headed by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has not publicly responded to the renewed allegations. Messages sent by The Indian Express to Kadam seeking comments elicited no response. During a recent session of the Legislative Council, Kadam had acknowledged that the license was in his mother's name, but claimed that the bar had been leased to a third party and that his family was not involved in its operations. Parab rejected that explanation, asserting that license holders remain legally accountable for the premises. 'How can a Minister of State for Home be allowed to continue when his own family is linked to such a serious violation of law?' he said. 'If Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis does not act, it will set a dangerous precedent.' Parab also alleged that the bar had been misclassified in government records and operated in violation of its license conditions. He further claimed that Kadam's family was involved in the illegal diversion of sand from the Jagbudi River in Ratnagiri for the construction of a private dental college affiliated with them. The political rivalry between Kadam and Parab traces back to their time in the undivided Shiv Sena, particularly when Parab served as the Guardian Minister for Ratnagiri district between 2019 and 2022 — the home district of Kadam's father, senior Sena leader Ramdas Kadam.

‘Sensitive Matter': MEA Refutes Reports In Nimisha Priya's Execution Case
The Ministry of External Affairs urged restraint and rejected speculation on Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse facing the death penalty in Yemen. India is working to bring her home. The Ministry of External Affairs urged restraint and rejected speculative reporting around the case of Nimisha Priya, the Indian nurse facing the death penalty in Yemen, reaffirming that India is working 'through all possible channels" to bring her home. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, 'This is a sensitive matter. The Government of India has been giving all possible assistance in this case. As a result of our efforts, you all have seen that the sentencing was deferred… As I said last time, we are also in touch with some friendly government in this matter… I would urge to refrain from believing any media report. Please wait for an update from us." The statement from MEA came days after 13-year-old Mishel, the daughter of Nimisha Priya, went to Yemen to plead for her mother's life. Mishel, who had not seen her mother in over a decade, was accompanied by her father Tomy Thomas and Global Peace Initiative founder Dr KA Paul. In an emotional video message delivered in both Malayalam and English, Mishel said, 'I love you, mummy. Please help bring my mother back home. I so badly want to see her. I miss you, mummy." Tomy, also speaking from Yemen, appealed directly to the authorities, saying, 'Please save my wife Nimisha Priya and help her reach her hometown." Nimisha Priya, a trained nurse from Kerala, moved to Yemen in 2008 and later opened her own clinic. In 2017, she was arrested for the alleged murder of her former business partner, Talal Abdo Mehdi. Authorities claim she attempted to sedate him to retrieve her passport- reportedly held by him without consent- but the sedative proved fatal. She was convicted in 2018 and sentenced to death in 2020. Her execution, initially scheduled for July 16, was suspended after sustained diplomatic outreach from India. The MEA confirmed it is providing full legal assistance to Nimisha Priya's family, including visa support and consular access, and has deputed a team of legal and Sharia experts to Yemen. The case remains complex as under Yemeni Sharia law, the victim's family holds the right to pardon in exchange for diyyah (blood money). However, the brother of the deceased, Abdelfattah Mehdi, has publicly refused any clemency, saying, 'There can be no pardon for the crime." Dr KA Paul praised Yemeni authorities for engaging with the humanitarian appeal, saying, 'Nimisha's only daughter did not see her for 10 years. Mishel is here. I want to thank the Talal family. As soon as you release Nimisha, hopefully tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, we shall be very grateful. God will bless you." Calling Nimisha Priya a 'symbol of peace," he added, 'The nation of Yemen will bring investments and prosperity when you address the world because Nimisha has become the daughter of India. What you are doing is an amazing gesture." The Indian government has maintained a cautious stance, urging the media to avoid conjecture as sensitive negotiations continue. The MEA reiterated, 'Please wait for an update from us." view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. MNS Activists Blacken Face OfNIT Officer Over Alleged Graft
1 2 Nagpur: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists on Thursday blackened the face of assistant engineer with Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), Suresh Chavan, at the trust's East Division office over his alleged involvement in corruption. While the NIT claimed that the ink attack was due to personal enmity, MNS office-bearers maintained it was the result of negligence by NIT's senior officials, despite multiple complaints against the official in question. MNS's city unit secretary, Ghanshyam Nikhade, said the party's office-bearers had given multiple complaints against Chavan to senior NIT officials, but they did not take any action and instead protected him. "Even on July 18, we had submitted a written complaint regarding corruption by Chavan, but the officials neither took any action nor transferred him. Had action been taken by the seniors, the incident could have been avoided," said Nikhade. He also added that NIT officials are contacting party office-bearers from rural Nagpur who do not have any knowledge about the issue. A senior NIT official told TOI that the attack was due to personal animosity. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mini House for 60 sqm for Seniors with Toilet and Bath (Prices May Surprise You) Pre Fabricated Homes | Search Ads Search Now Undo "We have directed the official to file a police complaint as the incident happened on NIT premises. We have also given a complaint in writing to the police," said the official. MNS claimed that on Sept 13, 2023, under the leadership of Sandeep Deshpande and Raju Umralkar, the party had taken out a protest march to the NIT office and submitted a memorandum to the then chairman, Manojkumar Suryawanshi. "At the time, Chavan had been serving continuously for 10 years at the NIT's East Division office without transfer. This prolonged tenure enabled him to carry out several large-scale irregularities. For example, he reportedly collected lakhs of rupees from encroachers of NIT-owned land in Mouza-Chikhali (Dev) by promising them unauthorized land allotments," said MNS. The MNS also accused Chavan of embezzling govt funds under the guise of development works in Bhandkheda (Central Nagpur) by submitting fake bills for cement road projects that were either not carried out or were actually done by the NMC. "All these instances of corruption, along with supporting evidence, were submitted to various authorities, including the then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and other concerned govt agencies. The chief minister's office acknowledged the memorandum and directed immediate investigation. However, NIT officials dismissed these directives and took no action. On the contrary, with support from certain political figures and senior NIT officials, Chavan allegedly got himself re-appointed to the East Division to resume his corrupt activities after being briefly transferred to West Division office," the MNS alleged in a press note.
