Death Valley's Timothy Spall's 'pain and horror' over health scare
The award-winning actor said his leukaemia diagnosis was 'a shock'

Actor and BAFTA winner, Timothy Spall has shared his harrowing experience of facing leukaemia, revealing there was a point where he feared he "might not make it". The 68-year-old will star in BBC's new comedy crime drama, Death Valley, where he plays retired TV detective John Chapel.
The esteemed actor, is celebrated for his decades of work on TV and film, notably his roles as Barry in '80s classic Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter series as well as his performance in the 2014 film Mr Turner. After receiving a diagnosis of the life limiting condition, he described the prospect of leaving his family as "unbearable".
In an intimate discussion with Saga Magazine, Spall recounted the moment he received his leukaemia diagnosis in 1996, and the ensuing "horror" at the thought of dying and its impact on his family. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter .
He said: "I was 39 and we had three kids, and out of the blue I was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease called acute myeloid leukaemia. When I was told I had it, I got down on my knees and asked God to spare me for my family."
Timothy continued, reflecting on the darkest times: "There was a time when they thought I might not make it. The only really unbearable thing was what my family would do if I went? I wouldn't be there to look after them, and that was my job as a husband and father."
The English actor is happily married to writer Shane Spall and is the proud father of three children: Rafe, Pascale, and Mercedes.

Spall delved deeper into his emotional turmoil: "The pain and the horror of what me dying would do to the people I loved was the only unbearable side of it. The rest I could take.
"One day, between treatments, the doctors had done tests and they thought I'd relapsed. A massive mushroom-type thing had grown in my lung. I was about to go and have full body radiation and a bone marrow transplant knowing there were things in my body that'd potentially kill me. That morning, I woke up and thought, sod this, I'm not going to die."
When discussing his relationship with his wife of 44 years, he said that the pair were inseparable and practically joined at the hip. He explained: "We got married four months after we met. I think there is a lot to be said for marrying someone you don't know. I was just in love with her. She is also my best mate."
Timothy and his wife, also share a love for Wales. His new venture, Death Valley, was filmed and is set in South Wales which the actor called "extremely beautiful."
He said: "I have worked in Wales a couple of times, and my wife and I also went all along the coast on our boat. I know every port along the way, so I've spent a bit of time there, the coast is so beautiful."
Timothy continued: "Cardiff is a lovely, very friendly, and welcoming place. We were based in Cardiff, but you are half an hour away from the most exquisite countryside."

The leading actor, who plays TV detective John Chapel, even calls it "god's country" at one point in the series.
Death Valley will air on Sunday, May 25 at 8.15pm on BBC One, however the whole boxset will be launching on BBC iPlayer at the same time.

In 1974 – six years after publishing Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – the sci-fi writer Philip K Dick had a hallucinatory experience, sparked by the reflection of light from a delivery woman's necklace, that began a lasting obsession with an imaginary and elusive godlike being. He called this figure Zebra, on account of its propensity for camouflage – hence the title of Mark Simpson's new electric guitar concerto for Sean Shibe, Zebra (or, 2-3-74: The Divine Invasion of Philip K Dick), the centrepiece of this polychromatic Prom from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Anja Bihlmaier. It's a conventional concerto in some ways: in three movements, fast, slow, fast. But, although the guitar carries the melodic line most of the time, it doesn't hog the limelight: no Brian May on the palace roof posturing here. Instead, chameleon-like, it slips in and out of camouflage, blending with the orchestra then standing apart, and creating new sonorities. Guitar and muted trumpets wah-wah together; high pinprick notes merge into high violin glitter; in moments of stillness, the orchestra, augmented by synth and organ, traces an aura around the guitar that sounds like the result of a reverb pedal until this halo asserts an eerie presence of its own. Everything tumbles towards a big extravagant ending, with an AI voice quoting Dick's words joining the melee. This voice didn't come across everywhere in the hall but was crystal-clear listening back on BBC Sounds; generally, in fact, the precise balance of the broadcast demystifies some of the sonic intrigue the piece created in the hall. Shibe's exuberant virtuosity is a constant, though, as is the vibrancy of Simpson's music. Shibe's encore was a heat-hazy version of Messiaen's choral piece O Magnum Mysterium: perhaps more of his music should be co-opted for electric guitar. Zebra came in between Strauss's Death and Transfiguration, initially understated but reaching a glowing apotheosis, and a fellow pharmaceutically inspired work, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. The orchestra responded ever more colourfully to Bihlmaier's storytelling conducting, with jumpscares in the March and, in the finale, grotesque-sounding woodwinds leading a tightly rhythmic witches' dance as sinister bells tolled from the gallery. BBC Wales' Lynda Shahwan dies aged 53 following car accident
BBC Wales presenter and podcast creator Lynda Shahwan has died at the age of 53 following a car accident. The car accident took place while Shahwan was on holiday in Canada with her family, according to the BBC. The 53-year-old, who hails from Heath (in Cardiff), created and co-presented Terry Walton's Plotcast. The podcast, which was regarded by the BBC as "one of Wales' most popular", saw the pair give "down-to-earth" advice on growing fruit and veg from Walton's allotment in the Rhondda Valley Shahwan had worked for Radio Wales for more than 25 years. Tributes paid to BBC Wales presenter Lynda Shahwan Walton led the tributes to Lynda Shahwan following her death. Speaking via the BBC, he said: "We pass our sympathies on to Lynda's husband Sharif, their two sons and all of the family on the tragic and sudden taking of Lynda from us far too soon. "My last two years of working with Lynda on the Plotcast were the most fulfilling and cherished broadcasting I have done. "Our chemistry and her creative talent made every episode a gem of gardening knowledge. Such fun whilst still being very informative. "Her professionalism and easy going manner made every recording a pleasure and brought the best out of us both. "We became true friends and after recording we would both relax and discuss many aspects of life." Devastated by this news. New EastEnders pictures reveal the dawn of a new era on Albert Square, as Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) takes over as landlady of The Queen Vic. As viewers of the BBC soap have seen, the Slater clan decided to play a practical joke on Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), when he announced his decision to buy the famed boozer. Pretending she'd won £100k on a scratchcard, Stacey (Lacey Turner) took great joy in seeing him squirm.
