Sabah to host National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day this weekend

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day 2025 (HPPNK 2025) will mark its 50th anniversary at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu from Friday to Aug 3.
According to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, the programme themed "Our Strength Secures the Nation (Kudrat Kami Menjamin Pertiwi)", will feature five main attractions: technology exhibitions, TVET training opportunities, business-matching opportunities, entertainment, and sales of produce with discounts of between 10 and 30 per cent.
Mohamad said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was scheduled to officiate the event at 9am on Aug 3.
The ministry expects up to half a million visitors.
Mohamad said this before appearing on TV3's Malaysia Hari Ini at Studio 1, Balai Berita Bangsar today.
Mohamad encouraged public participation, particularly among Sabahans, adding that the event showcased how agriculture could support families, communities, and even grow into industrial-scale ventures.
This year's edition will highlight youth-led agricultural success stories.
Among them is a group in Tawau cultivating premium-grade avocados.
Sabah, he said, could emerge as a regional and even global centre for avocado production.
The ministry is also promoting high-potential crops like pineapples, durians, and onions. The latter has gained traction in Sabah, with efforts aiming to meet domestic demand.
These exhibitions served to inspire more involvement in local farming across Malaysia, he said.
While visitors can also expect a festive atmosphere with shopping, family activities, and live entertainment, the greater goal is to motivate those in agriculture, aquaculture, and agrotourism.

Smart SBB revolutionises padi farming in Kota Belud

Adlin showing the new padi variety.-Bernama photo KOTA KINABALU (Aug 4): The Smart Large-Scale Padi Field (Smart SBB) programme has revolutionised padi farming in Kota Belud with the introduction of advanced technologies such as drone usage and modern ploughing machinery. Launched in 2023, this high-impact initiative has not only modernised the padi farming sector but has also nurtured a new generation of padi farmers who are more productive, efficient, professional, and competitive in increasing their yields. Kampung Jawi-Jawi Village is among the pioneering locations for the Smart SBB programme in Kota Belud, Sabah's main rice granary, located about 73 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu. Nineteen padi farmers are involved in cultivating 49 hectares of padi under this initiative. Sharing his experience with Bernama, Adlin Mohammad, the Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS) farm manager in Jawi-Jawi, said the programme has significantly transformed the lives of padi farmers, who no longer rely on manual labour as they once did. Adlin, 51, a third-generation padi farmer who has been in the industry for 18 years, shared that the use of modern technology has not only saved time and energy but also enhanced fieldwork efficiency. 'We used to plough with buffaloes, but now we use a variety of modern machinery, adapted to the area's terrain and soil conditions,' he said when met by Bernama at the BERNAS booth during the three-day National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day 2025 celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre, which concluded yesterday. Although there was initial scepticism, Adlin said the programme has since received a positive response from farmers, who now embrace the blend of traditional knowledge and modern technology. 'The rice-seeding process using drones is not only faster but also more uniform compared to traditional methods. Farmers no longer need to be in the fields daily. They can now monitor operations remotely,' explained Adlin, who plays a key role in overseeing the Smart SBB operations in his village. In addition to more systematic irrigation management, the programme also emphasises disease and pest control, with farmers guided to conduct regular monitoring to minimise the risk of crop infection. This proactive approach, he said, has improved discipline in crop management, addressing longstanding challenges such as pest infestations and unpredictable weather patterns like drought. He said padi yields have also shown consistent improvement throughout the programme's four seasons, with production rising from 4.11 metric tonnes per hectare in the first season to 4.59 metric tonnes per hectare in the fourth season this year. 'Every increase in paddy production means that our income also increases. We hope to be able to continue this momentum,' he said, hoping that the relevant agencies could provide diesel subsidies and logistical assistance, particularly for harvesting operations outside BERNAS-supervised areas. He proposed the introduction of new padi seed varieties, noting that while TR8 seeds have been in use for nearly a decade due to their suitability for local soil and climate conditions, newer varieties could offer even better yields. Adlin emphasised the importance of continued government support for BERNAS by approving proposals that could expand the Smart SBB initiative and strengthen infrastructure to boost paddy production. The Smart SBB programme is a strategic initiative under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security aimed at increasing padi output, improving farmers' income, and ensuring national food security through the use of modern technology and integrated management. Apart from BERNAS, the programme in Kota Belud is implemented in collaboration with technical agencies such as the Kota Belud Integrated Agricultural Development Area, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, and the Kota Belud Area Farmers' Organisation. Following its success in Kampung Jawi-Jawi, the programme was expanded in the second season of 2023 to cover 174.97 hectares with the participation of 121 farmers. – Bernama

1,000 set to discuss global irrigation

Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: The 4th World Irrigation Forum (WIF4) will bring together over 1,000 participants from more than 30 countries. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, said the forum serves as a key platform for strategic discussions on the future of the global irrigation sector, which is currently facing multi-dimensional pressures, including water resource constraints. Malaysia will host the conference, which will take place from September 7 to 13, this year, at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. 'Over 100 papers will be presented by representatives from government agencies, research institutions, international organisations, the private sector, and farming communities both from within Malaysia and abroad,' he said during the Pre-Launch Ceremony of WIF4 and the International Executive Council (IEC) Meeting, held in conjunction with the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) here on Saturday. He stated that one of the main events is the High-Level Advisory Group Meeting, which will be attended by key leaders, technical experts, and policymakers from 24 countries to discuss water resilience and the sustainable modernization of irrigation. 'The outcome of the meeting is expected to outline policy recommendations and a global direction to strengthen the irrigation sector in support of global food sustainability,' he said. He stated that WIF4 also serves as an important platform for fostering collaboration between practical experience and scientific research, as well as strengthening international networks. 'I urge policymakers, researchers, engineers, and agri-entrepreneurs to make full use of this forum to accelerate the implementation of high-impact projects and to adopt innovative technologies and practices,' he explained. Mohamad stated that the forum's theme, Is Irrigation a Sunset Industry?, is highly significant as it challenges all stakeholders to reassess the direction of the irrigation sector in the context of the digital era and the climate crisis. He added that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is actively implementing various initiatives, including the adoption of modern technologies such as precision agriculture, Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart irrigation systems, and sustainable approaches to water resource management. He stated that the theme encourages critical discussions and promotes new innovations to ensure the irrigation sector remains relevant, productive, and sustainable. The organisation of the forum is also supported by The Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), and Malaysia Airlines as the Official Supporting Airline Partner. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Corporate Smart Internship programme helped 7,051 parolees find jobs, says Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 7,051 parolees undergoing rehabilitation through the Corporate Smart Internship (CSI) programme have secured job offers across five key sectors, according to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He highlighted that 789 companies are collaborating with the Prisons Department to support the initiative, which aims to reintegrate inmates, referred to as 'prospects', into the workforce via parole, licensed release schemes, or Henry Gurney rehabilitation programmes. "Whether released through parole or other supervised schemes, we call them 'prospects', not convicts. They are now outside the prison walls, employed and contributing," he stated in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 4). The job opportunities span the services, plantation, manufacturing, agriculture, and construction sectors. Saifuddin is confident that the number of prospects placed in jobs could soon rise to 8,500, with Guthrie (SD Guthrie Bhd) agreeing to accommodate an additional 644 candidates. "Guthrie not only hires them but also trains them, issues harvesting certificates, and pays them a proper wage," he mentioned, adding that Shopee is expected to take on up to 350 prospects. Addressing concerns about public and employer perceptions, Saifuddin stressed the importance of ongoing engagement to change mindsets and reduce stigma. "The prison is no longer merely a place of punishment. It's a teaching factory for work-based learning. We provide TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) in 35 institutions within our prison system," he explained. Saifuddin was responding to V. Sivakumar (PH–Batu Gajah) regarding the effectiveness of the parole programme from 2024 to June 2025. The training encompasses six core fields: food preparation, services, manufacturing, textiles, agriculture/plantation, and animal husbandry. According to Saifuddin, 19,361 inmates have completed TVET programmes and obtained certifications recognised by the Department of Skills Development (JPK) and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) as of 2024.
