Noel Tata talks up Trent's grocery business as its next big Star

Bengaluru: Trent Ltd's grocery business, Star, holds the potential to become larger than the Tata Group-backed company's flagship fashion brands Zudio and Westside, chairman Noel Tata said on Thursday. 'This is only because the food market is much bigger than the market for clothing,' Tata said addressing shareholders at Trent's annual general meeting. 'So, we are convinced there's a huge opportunity there and with time you will see that we will deliver a big business in the food and grocery space as well.' Trent ended Thursday's trading session with a market capitalisation of ₹ 2,19,918.76 crore, which makes it the Tata Group's fourth-most valuable company, behind Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, Titan Co. Ltd, andTata Motors Ltd. Trent's focus on Star comes less than a year after Noel Tata's son Neville Tata, 32, was appointed as the business head of the grocery business. Star has accumulated over ₹ 1,000 crore in losses over the previous six years. Zudio, meanwhile, crossed the ₹ 8,300 crore revenue mark in 2024-25, while Westside generated ₹ 6,210 crore in revenue. Star, however, contributed about 15.2% to Trent's consolidated revenue in FY25, underscoring its growing weight in the company's overall portfolio. Star recorded its highest-ever revenue of ₹ 8,854 crore during the year, up nearly 25% from FY24. According to an analyst report by HDFC Securities Ltd, Trent plans to invest ₹ 2,000 crore in Trent Hypermarket Pvt. Ltd, which runs Star, this financial year. That would be nearly three times the ₹ 754 crore Trent has invested in its grocery business in nearly two decades, the brokerage firm said in a note dated June 27. Neol Tata did not comment on this at the AGM. Trent did not immediately reply to Mint's emailed queries. Trent shares ended Thursday's trading on NSE down 0.68% at ₹ 6,180.00 each, while the benchmark Nifty 50 index shed 0.19%. Trent's Star format store has prioritised focus on building in-house or private-label products. In the fourth quarter of FY25, private-label products accounted for 72% of Star's sales. Fresh produce and general merchandise together accounted for 50.5% of Star's product mix during the quarter. 'They (Star) are not growing aggressively at the moment,' said Pratik Prajapati, equity research analyst at financial advisory Ambit. 'The priority is chasing growth and making existing stores profitable before expanding further.' Trent's ambition for Star, however, comes at a time when quick-commerce firms likeSwiggy's Instamart, Zomato's Blinkit, and Zepto are upending how people, particularly in large cities, buy groceries. 'The format (Star) is facing tough competition in these markets, where speed and convenience are becoming as important as price,' said Prajapati. According to a February report by PwC and Hansa Research, quick-commerce in India grew at 73% in FY24, with over 90% of its demand concentrated in India's top eight cities. Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart have made significant inroads in metropolitan cities, where 42% of consumers prefer instant deliveries for essentials such as packaged food and personal care products, it said. Noel Tata, who is credited with building Zudio and Westside, was appointed chair of Tata Trusts in October following the passing of Ratan Tata. Tata Trusts is the umbrella entity that oversees the functioning of all the philanthropic entities of Tatas, including the seven Tata Trusts that together own 65.9% of Tata Sons. Tata Sons, headed by chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran, is the group's operating company and owns shares in 26 Tata companies, including Trent, TCS, and Tata Motors.

Tata Harrier EV bookings open: Here's everything you should know

Tata Motors has officially opened bookings for its highly anticipated Harrier EV, starting from July 2, 2025, with a token amount of ₹ 21,000. This all-electric flagship SUV was unveiled on June 3, 2025, and marks a major step in Tata's electrification journey. The Harrier EV is available in five variants—Adventure, Adventure S, Fearless Plus, Empowered, and the top-spec Empowered AWD—with prices ranging from ₹ 21.49 lakh to ₹ 30.23 lakh (ex-showroom). The Harrier EV is offered with two battery pack options. At first glance, the Harrier EV retains much of the bold and muscular design of its ICE counterpart. However, several EV-specific updates set it apart. The front end now features a closed-off grille for improved aerodynamics and a redesigned bumper with satin silver vertical slats that assist in cooling internal components like the battery and electric motors. The connected LED DRLs stretch across the front fascia, giving the SUV a modern look. From the side, the silhouette remains familiar, but it now rides on aero-optimized 18-inch alloy wheels designed to enhance efficiency. Interestingly, the Harrier EV doesn't adopt the flush door handles seen on newer Tata models like the Curvv EV or Altroz 2025. At the rear, the connected LED tail-lamps remain, with a subtly updated bumper rounding off the look. Interior: Premium Tech and Terrain Control The cabin design echoes the diesel-powered Harrier but features several high-tech upgrades. Highlights include a massive 14.5-inch Samsung Neo QLED touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The instrument panel can even mirror navigation maps for better driver convenience. Tata Harrier EV will be offered in four colour schemes. One of the standout additions is a new rotary terrain selector offering six modes: Normal, Sand, Mud Ruts, Snow/Grass, Rock Crawl, and Custom, enhancing its off-road versatility. Powertrain & Range: Built on the new Architecture Built on Tata's new plus architecture, the Harrier EV is the brand's first all-electric AWD vehicle, joining the ranks of earlier AWD models like the Aria, Hexa, and Safari. (Also read: Tata Harrier EV at Quad Day: Capability without drama and technology with real purpose) The electric SUV is offered with two battery pack options—65 kWh and 75 kWh. The 65 kWh variant delivers 538 km (MIDC) of range and offers performance similar to the RWD versions of the 75 kWh variant. The larger 75 kWh battery is available in two drivetrain configurations: RWD: 235 bhp, 315 Nm, 627 km range (MIDC) QWD (AWD): 391 bhp, 504 Nm, 622 km range (MIDC) These figures make the Harrier EV not only the most powerful Tata EV yet but also one of the longest-range electric SUVs in its class. Rivals Tata Harrier EV will be going against the Mahindra XEV 9e and BYD Atto 3.

In pics: Car sales in India slump in June, SUVs contonue to buck the trend

1/10 The Indian PV market witnessed a mixed sales performance in June 2025, with three of the top four OEMs, including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors recording sales slump amid weak consumer sentiment. The automakers have blamed it to the geopolitical crisis, Weighed down by a slowdown in retail demand, car manufacturers reduced passenger vehicle supplies to the auto dealers in June. This resulted in a seven per cent year-on-year (YoY) decline in wholesale dispatch numbers. Seven of the country's largest car manufacturers, cumulatively accounting for 95 per cent of the domestic PV market, dispatched 300,226 units to their dealer networks last month. 2/10 The small car sales continued to see a lacklustre performance last month, while SUVs bucked the trend of declining sales. This has directly impacted the carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors adversely. 3/10 Maruti Suzuki registered its weakest domestic monthly sales in more than 18 months. The OEM that has the largest pool of small cars saw a 13 per cent YoY drop in wholesale volumes in June 2025, down to 118,906 units compared to 137,160 units sold in June last year. Hyundai has blamed this on the geopolitical crisis and low consumer sentiment as key factors and anticipates recovery with lower repo rates, improving liquidity and the Talegaon plant production. However, Hyundai Creta retained the crown of highest selling passenger vehicle for the third consecutive time in June 2025. 5/10 Tata Motors too posted a steep decline last month, with its wholesale volume slumping 15 per cent YoY to 37,083 units, including electric vehicles. The Japanese car manufacturer registered a modest three per cent YoY increase in June wholesales with 26,453 units. The carmaker sells popular models like the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, among others. 10/10 JSW MG Motor India charted a 21 per cent YoY sales growth in June sales numbers, with 5,829 units sold.
