Man fakes employment after layoff, gets job offer with ‘higher salary, better title, remote' work — Here's what happened
A strange incident came to light recently about how a man got hold of a job offer with 'higher salary, better title' and remote work simply by pretending to be employed after he got laid off. A social media user elaborated on his experience and explained the exhilarating sequence of events.
In a post on Reddit, the user stated, 'Back in August, I got laid off unexpectedly. No warning, no severance, just a 'hey, we're restructuring' and a Zoom call that lasted 3 minutes. I panicked.'
All the while the man was unemployed, he lied about the status of his job and didn't disclose the news about being relieved from his previous role to anyone, neither friends nor ex-coworkers. 'I just… pretended I was still working,' he said.
He continued to fake his job by following the everyday routine. 'Every day I'd 'log in,' aka open my laptop and sit there like I was busy. Told people I had meetings. Walked around with AirPods in like I was on calls,' he wrote while describing how he applied for several jobs in the background. The lie was too far stretched as he faked about 'exciting projects at work' even on LinkedIn to give the illusion that he was still employed.
This continued until one fine day a recruiter came across one of those fake posts and reached out. Asserting how his efforts paid off, he said, 'A recruiter….asked if I was open to opportunities. I said yes. Got an interview. Lied through my teeth about the 'current job.' Crushed the interviews. Got an offer higher salary, better title, remote, actual work-life balance.'
The viral post received over 24 thousand reactions. Social media users were in frenzy to know this bewildering tale as one user wrote, 'As soon you know the rules of how to play their game, you can only win. No need to tell, you went by the rules.'
Another user asked, 'What about back ground verification? Didn't they validate the tenure of working years, months?' A third user stated, 'You played the game and you played it right.' A fourth user quipped, 'Probably still unemployed and lying in this post.' Another comment read, 'This is a true example of faking it until you make it.'

It began a month ago when Reddit user aditya8848 posted a plea on the r/Ghaziabad subreddit, reporting the loss of an expensive gadget in Noida. 'I lost my airpods case in Noida sec 141 on Saturday night. When i tracked it yesterday it appeared to be in a place called Teela in Ghaziabad. I really need to find it. Getting a replacement is too expensive for me. Please help, (sic) the user wrote while flagging his post as 'emergency". A few days later after making his initial post, Aditya took to the social media platform once again, informing everyone that his AirPods were on the move from Noida and pinged last in the Ghaziabad area. Maintaining that he needed help from the community, especially the locals, the user, sharing the map location of the music-listening device's case, wrote: 'Few days back i lost my airpods case in Noida. I just received a notification that says the airpods case is in ghaziabad now. Someone has taken it to their home. Please help me get them (sic)." The community, eager for more updates, urged him to give up his hunt suggesting that it wasn't worth the hassle. Update 2 Not the one to give up, Aditya, in his follow-up post, shared a new location of the AirPods that were still moving about in the Ghaziabad area. In the same post, the Reddit user claimed that he had filed an FIR. 'up police has a portal to file lost item complaint. I just used it. Ab wo dhundhenge ya nhi. I don't really care. But ive done my part, (sic)" the distressed owner of AirPods informed that he had filed an online complaint. Keeping at his endeavour, Aditya, almost 20 days into his search, revealed that he was travelling to Ghaziabad and asked the community to give him tips and tricks on how to go about his hunt. Reddit, sensing that it wasn't a wise move to go alone and confront locals about his missing device, urged Aditya to go the most sensible route of informing the authorities to accompany him. 'Bro don't do this, what will you do you will entry this slum area and then go in this house or whatever then search for your airport [AirPod] and then come home!!?? You think it's that straight forward. Either enter with police. You won't be able to find the house in the first place it's easy to see on map, (sic)" a concerned netizen responded. Conclusion In a 'final update" dated four days ago, Aditya shared a photograph of police officers purportedly at the residence of his missing AirPods and narrated the conclusion of what turned into a desperate, month-long hunt. Claiming that the AirPods were in Now in Loni, Ghaziabad, Aditya wrote: 'I kept receiving location updated from the airpods case and it was from a home in loni area. I was just not being able to live with the fact that my airpods case is right there and I am not able to retrieve it. So finally on Sunday I left noida with a friend in pursuit of the case, (sic)" he wrote. The user further stated that he had approached the police in Tila More, a village in Loni, where officers advised against searching for his lost AirPods alone and directed him to contact the police in the jurisdiction where the device last pinged. Alleging that he took trips to six police stations before finally landing at the right one, Aditya was later accompanied by cops who took him to the AirPods' location on the bike. But after scanning three houses, despite the AirPods pinging from a nearby location, the cops halted their search. With the government's flagship 'Digital India' programme completing ten years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that it has not remained a mere governance scheme, but has become a 'people's movement'. 'While decades were spent doubting the ability of Indians to use technology, we changed this approach and trusted the ability of Indians to use technology,' the Prime Minister wrote in a blog post on LinkedIn Tuesday. 'In 2014, internet penetration was limited, digital literacy was low, and online access to government services was scarce. Many doubted whether a country as vast and diverse as India could truly go digital. Today, that question has been answered not just in data and dashboards, but in the lives of 140 crore Indians. From how we govern, to how we learn, transact, and build, Digital India is everywhere,' Modi added. He said that in 2014, India had around 25 crore internet connections, which has today grown to over 97 crore. 'Over 42 lakh kilometres of Optical Fibre Cable equivalent to 11 times the distance between Earth and the Moon now connects even the most remote villages,' he said. The PM said that India's 5G rollout is among the fastest in the world, with 4.81 lakh base stations installed in just two years, with high-speed Internet reaching urban hubs and forward military posts alike including Galwan, Siachen, and Ladakh. 'India Stack, which is our digital backbone, has enabled platforms like UPI, which now handles 100+ billion transactions a year. Around half of all real time digital transactions happen in India. Through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), over Rs 44 lakh crore has been transferred directly to citizens, cutting out middlemen and saving Rs 3.48 lakh crore in leakages,' Modi said. The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a government-backed initiative to create a national e-commerce network, has recently crossed 200 million transactions, with the last 100 million in just six months, Modi said. 'From Banarasi weavers to bamboo artisans in Nagaland, sellers are now reaching customers nationwide, without middlemen or digital monopolies,' he added.
