Nicaragua ex-president Chamorro laid to rest in Costa Rica
The first woman president of the Americas, who defeated ex-guerrilla leader and current president Daniel Ortega in 1990 elections, died in exile in neighboring Costa Rica.
Addressing her funeral mass in San Jose, her son Carlos Fernando Chamorro said he would take her ashes home to Nicaragua when it 'becomes a republic again' -- a swipe at the increasingly autocratic Ortega.
During Chamorro's seven years as president between 1990 and 1997 she helped end a civil war that raged for much of the 1980s between US-backed 'Contra' rebels and Ortega's left-wing Sandinista government.
She credited her victory with speaking to Nicaraguans in language 'typical of a homemaker and a mother.'
She moved to Costa Rica in 2023 to be close to her children, three of whom are living in exile because of their opposition to Ortega.
Ortega, 79, led Nicaragua for a decade after toppling a US-backed dictatorship in 1979.
Since returning to power in 2007, he has shown increasingly authoritarian tendencies.
He has seized control of all branches of government and shut down thousands of NGOs since major anti-government protests in 2018, which he branded a US-backed coup bid.

Abang Johari: Federal-state ties remain strong for Sarawak's progress
MIRI: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has reiterated that the close cooperation between the state and federal governments would continue in the common interests of both the country and Sarawak. He said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government, which he leads, appreciates the cooperation currently enjoyed between the state and the federal government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "In fact, at the federal level, Sarawak is represented by a deputy prime minister, namely Datuk Sri Fadillah Yusof, in addition to other ministers from Sarawak," he said in his speech at the Sarawak Day celebration here yesterday. He expressed confidence that Sarawak's efforts to achieve greater prosperity would not undermine the wider national objective of advancing the country's overall development. He said the increase in Sarawak's revenue, particularly through the Sarawak Sales Tax (SST), would not diminish the country's revenue as the federal government has sufficient avenues to boost national income without burdening the people. Abang Johari said the GPS government would continue to fight for Sarawak's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) through ongoing negotiations with Putrajaya. "Sarawak has successfully regained nine rights under MA63 and the GPS government will continue its efforts to restore all rights that have been eroded over the years," he said. He noted that Sarawak started as a state with many shortcomings and widespread poverty, especially in rural areas, during the formation of Malaysia. "Now we are grateful that Sarawak's economy has shown very encouraging growth," he said, adding that last year Sarawak recorded its highest ever revenue of RM14 billion compared to RM13.3 billion in 2023. He said this year he had presented the largest budget in Sarawak's history amounting to RM15.8 billion, opening up opportunities for a more inclusive economy. "Under the powers provided by the Federal Constitution, the state has begun to enjoy more of its oil and gas revenues through the SST imposed on petroleum products as well as through profit sharing between Petronas and Petros," he said. The premier said the World Bank had recognised Sarawak as a high-income region for three consecutive years since 2022 based on a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of RM73,100 (US$17,000) in 2024, a figure that surpasses the threshold of RM63,800 (US$15,000) set by the bank. He said this status had placed Sarawak in fourth position after the Kuala Lumpur and Labuan and Penang, surpassing Selangor. He said the state government would continue to ensure Sarawak's resources are given added value through the creation of downstream industries, particularly in the oil and gas sector, guided by the long-term Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR). He expressed confidence that when fully implemented within 10 years the SGR would attract investments worth RM300 billion and generate RM120 billion in output from the product and service chain. "New industries will also be created, especially in the renewable energy sector, to generate up to 15,000 megawatts of energy by 2035, not only for domestic consumption but also for export to Asean countries," he said.

UN: Over 1,000 Palestinians killed while seeking food aid in Gaza
GENEVA: The UN on Tuesday said Israeli forces have killed over 1,000 Palestinians trying to get food aid in Gaza since the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation started operations. An officially private effort, the GHF began operations on May 26 after Israel halted supplies into the Gaza Strip for more than two months, sparking famine warnings. GHF operations have been marred by chaotic scenes and near-daily reports of Israeli forces firing on people waiting to collect rations in the Palestinian territory, where the Israeli military is seeking to destroy Hamas. "Over 1,000 Palestinians have now been killed by the Israeli military while trying to get food in Gaza since the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation started operating," UN human rights office spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan told AFP. "As of July 21, we have recorded 1,054 people killed in Gaza while trying to get food; 766 of them were killed in the vicinity of GHF sites and 288 near UN and other humanitarian organisations' aid convoys." Kheetan added: "Our data is based on information from multiple reliable sources on the ground, including medical teams, humanitarian and human rights organisations." The war in Gaza, sparked by Hamas's deadly attack on Israel on Oct 7, 2023, has created dire humanitarian conditions for the more than two million people who live in the coastal territory. Gaza's population faces severe shortages of food and other essentials. GHF says it has distributed more than 1.4 million boxes of foodstuffs to date. "We're adjusting our operations in real time to keep people safe and informed, and we stand ready to partner with other organisations to scale up and deliver more meals to the people of Gaza," GHF interim director John Acree said Monday. The United Nations and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the GHF over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives and violates basic humanitarian principles.--AFP

To secure ASEAN's digital future, the report recommends implementing five strategic priorities: 1. Establishing national 5G-AI development strategies with clear 2025-2030 roadmaps; 2. Creating empowered coordination agencies in ASEAN member countries; 3. Deploying forward-looking spectrum policies that promote accessibility and innovation; 4. Fostering vibrant AI-driven ecosystems through public-private collaboration; and 5. Implementing robust monitoring frameworks to track progress and enable course corrections. The LKYSPP report emphasises that enterprise adoption should be prioritised as the primary driver of 5G's economic impact. Looking across the region, there is much potential and notable examples of success: Singapore's 5G-powered smart ports have achieved 50% latency reduction, Thailand has deployed AI-enhanced disaster management systems, and Malaysia's wholesale network model has reached 82% population coverage.
