He was speaking after inaugurating the 300th birth anniversary celebration of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar held at Ravindra Kalakshetra.'Education, organisation, and struggle' is the mantra given by Dr B.R. But due to Ambedkar's contributions, opportunities for education became available to the 'Shudras' and women. The compulsory education law provided by our Constitution also helped in this regard, CM Siddaramaiah said.'My grandmother used to say 'Kurubas' are far from education, why should we study? But I went to school, earned a law degree, and became the Chief Minister. Had I not used the opportunity to study, I too would have ended up grazing cattle and sheep. Hence, Rani Ahilyabai's educational revolution became an inspiration to all and to this women's organisation,' he said.
'Those who do not know history cannot shape the future,' he remarked. Despite being in power for 20 years, Rani Ahilyabai Holkar did not aspire to expand her kingdom. Though the royal treasury was full, she led a simple life and prioritised good governance and development. She also played a vital role in social reform by working to end child marriage, he noted.Rani Ahilyabai had a secular mindset and had even supported inter-caste marriage, the CM pointed out. Only when women become socially and economically empowered through education can inequality be eradicated and social development achieved, he said. 'No one becomes lazy because of our government's welfare schemes.
On the contrary, they become socially empowered,' Siddaramaiah stated. 'Our government has implemented various schemes like Gruha Lakshmi and Shakti to empower women. These programmes have brought strength to society and to women, not laziness,' he clarified. The Chief Minister announced that land will be allotted in Bengaluru for the Karnataka Ahilyabai Mahila Samaja. CM Siddaramaiah further said that completing 25 years is a major achievement for any organisation. The Karnataka State Ahilyabai Holkar Women's Association has been highly successful. efforts, he added.

SC agrees to hear plea against UP govt's decision to merge primary schools
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a plea challenging the Uttar Pradesh govt's decision to merge over 100 primary schools with low student enrolment. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi agreed to list the matter in the week after advocate Pradeep Yadav, appearing for petitioner Taiyyab Khan Salmani, sought an urgent hearing. He said the state govt's order was challenged before the high court but it dismissed the pleas on July 7. Justice Kant said though a policy decision, it was ready to examine the issue if government schools were being shut. The plea said on June 16, the additional chief secretary of state's Basic Shiksha Department issued an order directing for taking steps for pairing of the schools managed under the supervision and control of the Basic Shiksha Adhikari and owned by the state government. "Consequent to which on dated June 24, 2025 the actual list of the schools which are being paired being 105 in numbers has been issued," the plea said. The high court dismissed the petitions on July 7 without considering the true facts and circumstances of the case that the said merger order will directly affect and destroy the already vulnerable education system in the state, it added. The petitioner argued that the policy decision was arbitrary, unreasonable and violative of Article 21A of the Constitution as it offended the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 and the rules framed by the state government. The plea referred to Rule 4(1)(a) and said it was incumbent for the state government to establish a school with respect to children from Class 1 to 5 in the habitation where there was no school within a distance of a kilometer and the habitation having a population of at least 300 people.

Gadkari opens Rs 472-cr Sigandur bridge, CM and ministers boycott event
Shivamogga/Bengaluru: Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari Monday inaugurated Sigandur bridge — India's second-longest cable-stayed structure — in Shivamogga district amid a political row as chief minister Siddaramaiah and his cabinet colleagues boycotted the event claiming they were invited at the last minute. The Rs 472-crore bridge, built over Sharavathi backwaters between Ambaragodlu and Kalasavalli in Sagar taluk, is expected to significantly cut travel time for devotees heading to Chowdeshwari temple in Sigandur, besides reconnecting villages cut off since the construction of Linganamakki dam in the 1960s. Gadkari, in a post on X, said an official invite was sent to the CM on July 11, followed by a letter on July 12, inviting his virtual presence. The CM acknowledged receiving the invite on July 11 but said "such last-minute communication cannot be considered due consultation". Proceeding with the event despite the state's explicit objection, he said, amounted to sheer arbitrariness and defied the spirit of cooperative federalism. Hours before the event, Siddaramaiah told reporters in Bengaluru, "As a mark of protest, none of us — PWD minister, district minister, Sagar MLA or I – are attending the inauguration. I had personally called Gadkari and asked him to postpone the programme. He said he would. But now, bowing to pressure from local BJP members, they went ahead with the event. I had a prescheduled event at Indi (in Vijayapura). It was scheduled a month ago and I'll be there. " Accusing the Centre of "deliberately" trying to create a rift between Centre and state, Siddaramaiah said, "It is they (Centre) who should invite us. Who started the friction? Protocol must be followed. The event is being held in our state, and we are in a federal system." Attaching the twin letters to his X post, Gadkari said, "The central govt continues to uphold established protocols... committed to cooperative federalism." About the controversy, deputy CM DK Shivakumar said, "The CM should have been informed well in advance. The state govt should have been taken into confidence. The CM has already said in a letter that his event in Indi taluk is also important. More than Rs 2,000 crore is being provided by the irrigation department." Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 14 (ANI): BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Monday hit back at Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Congress on the row over the Kalasavalli-Ambargondlu bridge inauguration in Karnataka's Shivamogga district. Addressing the press conference, MP Surya said that if the Chief Minister did not attend the event, it raises concerns over his commitment for the state. 'The bridge project had been pending for a very long time. All government programmes are conducted as per established protocols. If the Chief Minister is saying he will not participate in the event, it raises questions about his commitment to the development of Karnataka,' Tejasvi Surya told reporters. He further questioned the state government's Silk Road tunnel project and called it unscientific. Raising concern over the budget of the tunnel project, Surya said, 'Kerala coastal highway Trivandrum to Kasargod, 656kms completed in Rs 6500 crores and KR Puram to Silk Board flyover needs more than Rs 5600 crores. How is that possible? Even DK Shivakumar says even God cannot fix Bengaluru's traffic. It is an economic apartheid. This tunnel road project is not good for Bengaluru, and it is not scientific.' He added that the BJP will protest against the tunnel road project. 'So the BJP will fight and protest against this. This is a plan to loot the people of Bengaluru,' Tejasvi Surya said. The row began with the boycott of the inauguration of the bridge by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, his Cabinet colleagues, and Congress MLAs as a mark of protest after the CM's request to postpone the event was rejected by the Centre. Earlier, the Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge accused the Centre of doing 'politics' over the issue. 'This habit has been followed by the Central government for over a decade now. We were also in Delhi earlier, but we have never done this kind of politics. We would follow the protocols and structure, giving due respect to the state government and local representatives. Now, someone from Delhi decides that this is the time to inaugurate something and sends the invitation very late, showing that you are invited, but you can't make it to the event,' Kharge told ANI. He added, 'They are inaugurating projects on video conference and claiming the propriety. We have also invested money in this, given the structure and land. Everything has been happening only from Delhi, as if the state government has no role in it. This is wrong.' Earlier on Monday, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple key infrastructure projects, including the Kalasavalli-Ambargondlu bridge in Shivamogga. The bridge and the approach roads have been constructed at a cost of over Rs 473 crore by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The cable-stayed bridge across the Sharavati River backwaters reconnects villages severed by the 1960s Linganmakki dam construction. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa accompanied Gadkari to the occasion. (ANI)
