Plans for 550-megawatt AI centre with 2000 jobs at ex-Ravenscraig steelworks
Developers hope the proposals will bring thousands of new jobs and billions of pounds of inward investment to the area.
Edinburgh and York-based renewable energy developer Apatura has proposed to develop a major data centre with battery energy storage on 160 acres at the post-industrial site, located in central Scotland, less than 20km east of Glasgow.
It will be powered by 550 megawatts of grid connections due to come online by 2030.

Ravenscraig is one of five sites Apatura is progressing across Scotland's central belt. The developer has said it would be a "green AI data centre," using constrained wind and solar generation that's "often wasted on windy, sunny days".
The Ravenscraig Steelworks closed in 1992, and is now one of Europe's largest brownfield regeneration and community creation initiatives.
Apatura is working closely with North Lanarkshire Council and site owners Ravenscraig Ltd to advance the proposal.
It is estimated the project will cost £3.9 billion to build and an independent socio-economic study calculated that the centre would contribute an additional 0.4% to Scotland's annual GDP once operational, with construction activity delivering a one-off £1.2bn GVA (gross value added) boost, supporting over 16,000 job years across Scotland.
The ongoing annual GVA contribution is estimated at £729 million, supporting 2399 long-term jobs (direct, indirect, and induced).
Commenting on the bid, Apatura CEO Giles Hanglin said: 'This proposal plays strongly to Scotland's strengths – in green energy, in AI, in education and in skills – and would complement the country's significant capabilities in big data and research.
'We've secured the land and grid, and we're already working closely with relevant organisations locally and nationally to make sure the benefits are widely felt.
'If we were selected as an AI Growth Zone it would be a significant endorsement of our ambition to make Scotland a powerhouse of green, AI-enabled digital infrastructure – starting with Ravenscraig and extending across the central belt.'
Russell Wilkie, director of Ravenscraig, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for Ravenscraig to be at the forefront of green data centres which will transform Scotland's renewable power capabilities. With grid connections in place, land secured, and a delivery team aligned, we have a fully viable site within the Ravenscraig masterplan to meet the UK's AI infrastructure needs.
'This multi-billion pound investment project is a platform for national progress, combining energy, digital infrastructure, and regional innovation to create tangible economic and social benefits for Scotland and for the wider UK economy,' Wilkie said.
Development is also earmarked for the site to the east of the Wishaw Deviation freight railway line, and the remaining vacant employment land, known as SevenFourEight.
Strategically positioned within the Ravenscraig masterplan and with direct access to both the M74 and M8 motorways, SevenFourEight is a key industrial and business centre in Scotland's central belt.
Ravenscraig has secured support from North Lanarkshire Council over the years, including a new £74 million access road being delivered by the council.

Belfast-based Inclutech was founded in 2016 by Becca Hume after she was inspired by conversation with a deaf colleague to design an app for those who face challenges making a 999 voice call. The company's flagship TapSOS is the UK's first and only Government-accredited app that connects users to the emergency services with a series of taps. In line with its objective to design inclusive tech solutions to help protect vulnerable users, the company has now secured £400,000 to accelerate commercialisation of its products and fund a live pilot of a new platform designed to protect high risk victims, including those suffering domestic abuse and violence. The funding comprises £250,000 from the Ulster University's investment company Innovation Ulster Ltd (IUL) and £150,000 through Invest NI's Co-Fund III initiative. Co-Fund III, which is managed by Clarendon Fund Managers Ltd on behalf of Invest NI, seeks to invest into high-growth, innovative and export-driven companies across all sectors and all parts of Northern Ireland. Inclutech CEO Ms Hume welcomed the investment. 'Inclutech's vision is to create technology that protects and design that includes,' she said. 'This funding will be used to accelerate the development of our public and personal safety solutions, and fund a live pilot of our new platform, which is designed to protect high risk victims, including those suffering domestic abuse and violence. 'We are exploring several routes to market. We are already engaging with potential customers in law enforcement and Government, and then our roadmap is to diversify into the private sector with large corporates. As the business scales we will build our team further and expect to be recruiting for a number of roles in the next 12 months.' Jill Wilson from Clarendon Fund Managers said it was an 'exciting deal and real impact investment' in a company that has 'social purpose at its heart'. 'Becca and her team have created something that is already making a meaningful difference in making sure the most vulnerable in society can be heard and protected,' she said. The site is described in planning documents as "effectively open countryside", "some 2.4 hectares in size" and "bound by housing on three sides". Included in the proposal are plans to construct nine detached houses, six semi-detached houses and 23 flats split into three individual blocks. A council report has revealed the possible impact on local schools if families move to the new houses. They assessed nearby schools before ruling a "developer contribution" would be required if planning was permitted. Papers said: "Following assessment of the proposed development, the educational impact, has been assessed and presented in the data in appendix 1. "This shows that a developer contribution will be required for Bridge of Weir Primary School, Gryffe High School, and St Benedict's High School." In their objections, residents raised concerns about issues such as increased traffic, a lack of local infrastructure including schools and doctors surgeries to accommodate the development, and the potential flood risk to existing properties. Other concerns raised included the safety of cyclists and pedestrians including children walking to and from school, noise concerns and the impact on the 'significant local bat population'. The consultation on the plans closes on June 30 and the application is currently under consideration by Renfrewshire Council.

Hike in foreign investment in the country sees hundreds of jobs created in North Wales
North Wales is benefitting as the number of foreign direct investment projects in Wales grew significantly in the last financial year - creating and safeguarding more than 4,100 jobs. Wales secured 65 projects in 2024-25, a 23% increase on the previous financial year. This was the second highest increase of any nation or region of the UK. It compares with a 12% year-on-year decline in the number of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for the UK overall. The investments include the promise of 2,470 new jobs being created, a 30% increase compared to 2023-24. Again, this was the second highest increase of any nation or region across the UK. The results have been published by the Department for Business and Trade in its annual report on foreign direct investments in the UK. A total of 1,652 jobs were also safeguarded in Wales – the highest number of all nations and regions. As well as new investments into Wales from overseas firms, the figures also include expansion projects by foreign companies already located here. Historically, particularly under the former Welsh Development Agency, which was disbanded by the Welsh Government back in 2004, Wales had attracted more than 10% of all inward investment into the UK. Investments in the last year include at Shotton Mill Ltd, which is owned by Turkish corporate Eren Holdings. The North East Wales-based company will become the UK's largest paper-manufacturing campus thanks to a £1bn redevelopment. Supported by £13m Welsh Government funding, it will see 147 jobs safeguarded and create a further 220 when fully commissioned. Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, said: "Despite political and economic factors impacting growth globally, Wales has again seen a significant increase in foreign investment. 'There has been a large increase in jobs created through FDI in 2024-25 and the continuing growth of 'new' investment into Wales has reached a nine-year high. 'This is proof that our proactive approach to promoting Wales globally as a great place to do business is delivering. From Delhi to San Diego we have further raised the profile of Wales as an outstanding investment destination with key sectors that boast world class capabilities.' First Minister Eluned Morgan said: "Creating high quality jobs in key sectors is a priority for this government, and attracting overseas investment is a key part of our economic strategy. "We are focused as a government on economic growth, and these figures highlight the confidence investors are showing in the Welsh economy. Our International Investment Summit later this year will provide a further opportunity to showcase Wales to the world and attract even more investment into Wales."
