Wondrwherecraigis? Meet Brittany Russell's New ‘Trainer Taxi'
There's a new celebrity on the backside at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va., and he goes by Craig. His legal name is Wondrwherecraigis, and his latest role is acting as a 'trainer taxi' for trainer Brittany Russell.'He's only been working about a month and a half,' said Russell, who trained Wondrwherecraigis during his racing career. 'Everybody loves seeing him out there. He's like a celebrity, and the joke is that he could still outrun all of the barn.'The 8-year-old Munnings gelding retired from racing in October 2023, with a fourth-place finish in an allowance at Laurel Park.
Wondrwherecraigis' 20 career races from March 2020 until his retirement took Russell into the limelight for the first time. He provided her with her first career graded stakes win in the 2021 Grade 3 Bold Ruler Handicap, and took her across the world to run in the 2022 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan Racecourse.He retired in 2023 after Russell and his ownership group, comprising Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group LLC, Madaket Stables LLC, and Michael Caruso, felt he had lost a step.'He wasn't quite that stakes caliber horse anymore. We decided to retire him healthy and sound,' explained Russell.
Post-retirement, Wondrwherecraigis was retained by Russell and began training for a show jumping career. Despite finishing 17th of 49 competitors in show jumping at The Thoroughbred Makeover last year, Russell felt Wondrwherecraigis wasn't at his happiest.'It went fine, but we just didn't feel like that was his thing,' she said. 'He did it, but we didn't think he loved it.'Russell pulled him out of show jumping training and returned him to the racetrack.'He's been awesome, I just feel like he wants to be in the racehorse barn,' said Russell.'He's more like a trainer taxi than a pony. He doesn't do a whole lot of ponying, but he is my taxi.'
Russell is married to jockey Sheldon Russell, and together they have two children: their daughter, Edy, and their son, Rye.'[Wondrwherecraigis] was the first horse that my daughter really clicked on to in the racing barn,' said Russell. 'It's hard for the kids to understand sometimes. They come in the barn and get to know a horse, and then maybe they get claimed, or they get retired.'The hope is that one day Wondrwherecraigis can be a mount for Edy, who is now five years old.'We're hoping Craig is with us for many years,' said Russell. 'I believe she'll be riding him one day.'

NRL fans and pundits are paying tribute to Chad Townsend after the veteran halfback confirmed he'll retire at season's end. The 34-year-old took to social media on Tuesday to announce the news, which ws expected but never officially confirmed until now. He remains a cult hero amongst Sharks fans after playing halfback in that grand final victory over the vaunted Melbourne Storm. He also had two stints at the New Zealand Warriors, and played 70 gamed for North Queensland from 2022 to 2024. He signed a one-year deal with the Sydney Roosters for 2025, and it was widely expected to be his final season in the NRL. Townsend started the year as the Roosters' starting halfback, but was dropped to reserve grade in Round 6 after the emergence of Hugo Savala. The Roosters' singing of Townsend was largely around helping develop young halves Savala, Sandon Smith and Toby Rodwell. The 35-year-old was recalled to NRL level in Round 20 against Cronulla, but coach Trent Robinson later admitted it was a mistake after the Roosters' 31-18 loss. Altogether he's played 268 first-grade games, and represented the Prime Minister's XIII in 2018. He also played two games for the City Origin team before the concept was scrapped. Newmarket trainer Alice Haynes will aim to advance her international record this summer with Cairo, who is set to compete in the Grade 1 Arlington Million on Aug. 9 at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va., and the $2,000,000 Grade 3 Mint Millions Stakes on Sept. 6 at Kentucky Downs in Franklin, who started training in 2021, has already won Group or Listed races in Britain, France, Ireland, and Italy. She has also hit the crossbar in the UAE, with Cairo and Mr Professor both finishing second at the Dubai Racing will be the second runner in the States for the young trainer, who saddled Lady Hollywood at the Breeders' Cup in 2022. The filly finished fifth at Keeneland in the Juvenile Turf was purchased privately from the Coolmore partners by Kuawaiti owner Refai Alghraiban and joined the Newmarket yard in April 2024. The 5-year-old raced at the Dubai Racing Carnival for Haynes earlier this year, finishing second at Group level twice. He was last seen at Royal Ascot when he finished third in the Group 1 Queen Anne talked to Great British Racing International about Cairo and his effort at Ascot: 'I feel the horse has taken a massive step forward this year. He spent some time in quarantine in Dubai last year before joining us and that probably shook him a bit. His confidence seems up and he is versatile in the way he is ridden. On the decision to target the G1 Arlington Million, the trainer said:'The trip was first discussed before Royal Ascot and then the team from Colonial Downs came to meet the owner in the paddock at Ascot and the deal was sealed. Obviously, he needed to run well and he did. America should suit him as a fast track and a turn is what he likes.'He flies mid-week and seems in really good order. I am very pleased with his form. He is a bit of a globetrotter and travels well so that's good. I think he will run a great race.'Cairo's regular work rider Abel O'Gorman added:'He's a gentleman and at the same time he likes to play around, but he never means any harm. He always does what you ask him at home but would never do more than that until he gets to the track.'He has been working well since Royal Ascot and seems happy. He loves a bit of sun on his back so he has been well in himself lately and this should also be the case in America.' I Expected Happy Gilmore 2 Would Be A Fun Sequel, But Was Surprised By Who My Favorite Character Turned Out To Be

Golf ball-sized spoilers below for anyone who hasn't yet watched Happy Gilmore 2 with a Netflix subscription. Happy Gilmore may not be considered among the best sports movies in existence, and probably wouldn't even top lists limited to those starring Adam Sandler, which is an admission I make with abundant wincing. I adore it nonetheless, and perhaps naively had little doubts the character's return would be just as excellent — an opinion our Happy Gilmore 2 review supports. So I wasn't exactly surprised to spend the whole runtime laughing, but was surprised by who earned a lot of those laughs. Because several major cast members passed away after the O.G. comedy's release — with Carl Weathers' death sparking late-stage rewrites — Happy Gilmore 2 pays tribute to beloved characters who could not return, while bringing back essentially everyone who could, from Kevin Nealon's Gary Potter to Dennis Dugan's Doug Thompson to Shooter McGavin himself, Christopher McDonald. Yet it's somehow a larger-than-expected supporting role from a real-life golfer that stole the show for me. John Daly Is My Favorite Happy Gilmore 2 Character, Which Still Feels Weird To Say Like many Adam Sandler films, Happy Gilmore 2 exists on a plane where reality is heightened but emotions are grounded. Case in point: Virginia's death via golf ball in the opening catch-up mirroring Happy's dad dying via slapshot in the first movie. As such, this is a world where a widowed Happy and his five kids are living with a fictionalized version of real-life golfer John Daly. And it's so damned funny! Initially, Daly slumming it up in Happy's garage doesn't seem like such a stretch, and I can't even explain why. Perhaps because that bonkers detail is introduced early on with such a casual tone that it's like, 'Well yeah, why WOULDN'T they be living together?" Daly developed a reputation as a rabble-rouser on the golf course with behavior not unlike Happy Gilmore's. How The Cast Felt About Memorializing The OG Actors Who Died Before The Sequel However, Daly becomes more unsavory and feral as Happy gets back into the (golf) swing of things ahead of the Maxi Golf face-off, and it's wild just how many scenes in the movie cut back to him inside Happy's house. Whether he's with the Gilmore kids, Shooter McGavin, Steve Buscemi's weirdo neighbor character, or otherwise, Daly is far more of a supporting character than I ever would have predicted. Whlie I thought he'd be relegated to the banquet scene with all dozens of other real-life golfers appearing, Daly instead became an all-time great Sandler co-star. Making the role all the more baffling is the fact John Daly has been candid about his real-life struggles with alcoholism throughout his career and much of his adult life, which adds a strange layer to all the jokes about Happy's own boozing. Not to mention his endless supply of secret flasks throughout the house, which Daly makes attempts to seek out while also pumping hand sanitizer into his mouth. I can't explain why it's so funny for that specific act to punctuate a scene, but it works. It all works, in fact, to the point where I now won't be too surprised if Adam Sandler gets John Daly back for whatever his next Happy Madison movie is. Maybe he can be brothers with Blake Clark's homeless beachcomber. Extremely Honorable Mention Goes To Bad Bunny's Oscar Bad Bunny has already proven himself to be as multi-talented on screen as he is with music, so it's less surprising that his debut as Happy's new caddy Oscar is such a delight to watch. Perhaps the biggest surprise here is that Oscar is able to get so many laughs without having a whole lot of dialogue to play around with. The fact that Bad Bunny is able to make the line "Breadsticks?" work as a punchline across multiple scenes is as much an indication of his skills as anything. Just thinking about Oscar introducing his cousin Esteban (SNL's Marcello Hernandez) as his own caddy is enough to make me start giggling. As is Esteban's extreme generosity after it's clear he won't be anyone's caddy. I don't know if we'll get to see any further adventures from Happy Gilmore & Co., but I'm grateful that all involved took the time to make sure this long-awaited sequel was worthy of the wait. Also, if there ever IS another sequel, maybe it'll be one where Ben Stiller's Hal L. swallows a grenade and explodes. Solve the daily Crossword
