United cruise over Bournemouth in Premier League US friendly
Manchester United made it two wins out of two with a 4-1 victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League Summer Series pre-season tournament in Chicago on Wednesday. Goals from Rasmus Hojlund, Patrick Dorgu, Amad Diallo and teenager Ethan Williams sealed an encouraging result for Ruben Amorim's side at a rainy, windswept Soldier Field. United, who had opened their tour with a 2-1 victory over West Ham on Saturday, were always in control against the Cherries, taking the lead after just eight minutes through Hojlund. Dorgu curled in an inviting cross from the left flank and Denmark international team-mate Hojlund timed his run and jump to perfection to glance a header past Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. Dorgu then doubled United's lead in the 25th minute, latching on to a clever, lofted quick free-kick from Mason Mount, muscling his way into the area and sliding a cool finish beneath the advancing Petrovic. Diallo bundled in United's third in the 53rd minute before Amorim made nine changes with 20 minutes to go. Substitute Williams needed just two minutes to make an impact curling a low finish into the bottom corner to put United 4-0 up. The only blemish on United's performance came with an 88th-minute own goal from Matthijs de Ligt. In Wednesday's other Premier League friendly in Chicago, West Ham came from behind to beat former manager David Moyes's Everton 2-1. Idrissa Gueye put Everton 1-0 up after 17 minutes before West Ham recovered to equalise through Brazilian international Lucas Paqueta just before half-time. Germany international Niclas Fullkrug's 64th-minute strike sealed the Hammers' win. The result was another disappointing pre-season setback for Everton, who were soundly beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth on Saturday. "I'm not overly concerned because I don't have the players which I need and what I want," Everton boss Moyes said afterward. "We knew before we came (to the US) we were going to be really up against it. So, it was never going to be us coming here and winning." "At the moment we're not ready to perform well enough in this tournament, and we're not ready to start the Premier League season." The four-team competition concludes in Atlanta on Sunday, with United facing Everton and West Ham taking on Bournemouth. rcw/bb

Cubs acquire former All-Star starting pitcher Michael Soroka from Nationals
The Cubs are the latest team to shore up their pitching staff. Chicago made a move to acquire starter Michael Soroka from the Nationals on Wednesday night, less than 24 hours before the MLB trade deadline, The Post's Jon Heyman confirmed. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal first reported the deal. Advertisement 3 Michael Soroka Troy Taormina-Imagn Images The soon-to-be 28-year-old is a former All-Star and was a coveted arm at the deadline. Soroka hasn't had a great season in 2025, but there's plenty of reason to like what he brings to a team as a likely backend starter for Chicago, which sits in second in the NL Central at 63-45. Advertisement Soroka has posted a 4.87 ERA across 16 starts this season, but his advanced metrics suggest that he has pitched better than those numbers illustrate. His expected ERA, which estimates ERA based on the quality of contact allowed rather than simply the outcome, is in the 75th percentile this season, according to Baseball Savant. The expected batting average of hitters he faces ranks even better, sitting in the 84th percentile. His strikeout rate, walk rate and barrel rate all sit in the 69th percentile or better. 3 Michale Soroka Troy Taormina-Imagn Images Advertisement Soroka just now finding a groove for the first time in several years, as he's struggled with injuries. He suffered two Achilles tears and a forearm injury in recent years. His move to Chicago this trade deadline is actually a return of sorts, as he spent 2024 with the White Sox on the South Side of the Windy City. He pitched to a 4.74 ERA and a 0-10 record on nine starts and 25 total appearances for the White Sox. 3 Michale Soroka made an All-Star Game as a second-year player for the Braves in 2018. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post Before his injuries, Soroka's career was blossoming in Atlanta, as he made the All-Star Game in his second year and was top-6 in Cy Young voting with his 2.68 ERA. Advertisement In return for Soroka, the Cubs sent their No. 13 and 14 prospects to Washington, infielder Ronny Cruz and outfielder Christian Franklin, according to Heyman. The 18-year-old Cruz was drafted in the third round in 2024 and primarily plays shortstop. He hit .270 with a .745 OPS across nearly 200 plate appearances in rookie ball. Franklin was a fourth-round pick in 2021 out of Arkansas and is hitting .265 with an .820 OPS across 321 at-bats in Triple-A this season.

Cubs bolster back of their rotation with Michael Soroka, give Nats 2 solid prospects
Trade details: Chicago Cubs acquire RHP Michael Soroka for OF Christian Franklin and SS Ronny Cruz The Cubs needed pitching of some sort, and if they weren't going to spend big on top-end starters, at least they patched a hole towards the back of their rotation with today's trade that sends two prospects to the Nationals for Michael Soroka. Advertisement Soroka missed two years due to injuries, was not good in his return in 2023, then showed some hints that he was getting back to his old self after a trade to the White Sox before the 2024 season. He was dominant as a reliever for the White Sox, with a 39 percent strikeout rate out of the bullpen, but struggled as a starter to a 6+ ERA and as many strikeouts as walks. The Nats signed Soroka to a one-year deal and gave him a rotation spot, where he's had the best half-season of his career since 2019, striking out 25.4 percent of hitters despite below-average chase and whiff rates, although when hitters do make contact it's often the hard variety. He doesn't have a plus pitch any more, with a hard slurve his best offering, one he throws in the zone fairly often so hitters have to offer at it. The Cubs have been trying to make Ben Brown happen as a starter even though lefties torch him; just replacing him with Soroka could net them two wins the rest of the way this year. Christian Franklin should be a fantastic fourth outfielder — he's a plus defender in center and should be able to back up all three spots, while at the plate he's always shown good ball/strike recognition and mashes against lefties. He's flashed the kind of hard contact that might have indicated untapped power in the past, but it's never manifested in games except when he's facing a southpaw. The Nats don't exactly need starting outfield candidates, but he could be their fourth outfielder for a while. Ronny Cruz was the Cubs' third-round pick just last year out of a Miami high school, a deep projection signing as he was coming off knee surgery that delayed the start of his senior year. He won't turn 19 until next month and had a solid debut in the Arizona Complex League, hitting .270/.314/.431 with an 18.5 percent strikeout rate, but not much power — that slugging percentage is inflated by his six triples in 189 PA. He's got a sound swing that lets him drive the ball, with average bat speed, and some room to grow into plus power down the line. He's a shortstop now and probably moves to third base, with the plus arm to handle the hot corner.
