Women's Euro 2025: World champion Spain routs Portugal 5-0 in opener
The 32-year-old González became the oldest player to play for Spain at the tournament and she scored minutes before the youngest, 18-year-old Vicky López, added the second goal.
Spain captain Alexia Putellas also scored for La Roja on Thursday, showing she's ready to lead the team to success after missing Euro 2022 with a knee injury. Spain lost to eventual winner England in the quarterfinals of that tournament.
"We've been talking about how motivated we are for this (Euro) for so long, and now we had to show it. We have reason to be pleased," Putellas told Spanish broadcaster TVE.
Substitute Cristina Martin-Prieto completed the scoring with a header in stoppage time.
González wasted little time before opening the scoring after 87 seconds with a flick past Inês Pereira. It quickly became apparent the Portugal goalkeeper would have a busy game. She did.
Pereira did well to clear a cross but was unable to stop Mariona Caldentey giving López a tap-in minutes later.
Only 24 minutes were played when the fans started a Mexican wave around the nearly 30,000-capacity Wankdorf Stadium, normally home to Swiss Super League team Young Boys. The club also has a women's team, which is also called Young Boys.
Spain dominated possession in a textbook first-half display. Teammates' work off the ball ensured there was always a passing option. No player had the ball for long as it zipped around and the Portuguese players were left to chase it.
Putellas went close, Pereira denied Clàudia Pina, and it was no surprise when Putellas finally got the third goal after she displayed some brilliant control to evade a defender in the 41st.
The fourth came two minutes later when González tucked in the rebound after Pina's cross came back off the post.
But Spain coach Montse Tomé may have concerns about her team's second-half performance as her players' level of control dropped. Martin-Prieto's late goal was the only addition.
Spain didn't need Aitana Bonmatí. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner stayed on the substitutes bench until going on for López in the 81st. Bonmatí had been a doubt for the tournament after being hospitalized for viral meningitis last week.
"She's a very important player for us and we're happy she's back with us after recovering from her illness," Putellas said of Bonmatí.
"Now we hope she can get back quickly to top playing form."
The game was preceded by a moment's silence for Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, killed in a car crash with his brother the night before.
Italy defeated Belgium 1-0 in the other Group B game earlier. Spain plays Belgium next on Monday.

England becomes first reigning champion to lose a Women's Euro opener
ZURICH — England set a number of unwanted firsts as it began the defense of its Women's European Championship title by losing to France 2-1 on Saturday. England becomes first reigning champion to lose a Women's Euro opener Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore scored two quickfire goals towards the end of the first half as France recorded a ninth straight win and stunned the defending champion. Keira Walsh reduced the deficit three minutes from time but it wasn't enough to prevent England from becoming the first titleholder to lose its opening match at a women's Euros. It also ended England coach Sarina Wiegman's remarkable flawless record in the competition, after winning 12 out of 12 matches across two tournaments as she steered first the Netherlands to the title and then England. The Lionesses next face the Netherlands on Wednesday, before taking on Wales in their final group match four days later. The Netherlands beat Wales 3-0 in the early match in Group D. France was without injured captain Griedge Mbock, while England welcomed back Lauren James with the midfielder starting her first match since a hamstring injury at the start of April. James almost gave England the lead within 40 seconds with a clever run into the box but fired narrowly over. Alessia Russo thought she gave England the lead in the 16th minute, turning in the rebound after Lauren Hemp's shot was saved but it was ruled out for a tight offside decision on Beth Mead in the buildup. France grew in ascendancy after that. Sakina Karchaoui almost scored what would have been one of the goals of the tournament as she lobbed Hannah Hampton but the ball landed in the side-netting. Hampton also had to make a couple of fine stops before France broke the deadlock in the 36th. Elise De Almeida won the ball in her own half before surging down the right and threading the ball through to Delphine Cascarino, who put in a low cross for Katoto to tap in at the back post. France doubled its lead just three minutes later. Baltimore mazed her way into the area, close to the byline, and Lucy Bronze inadvertently kept the ball in play with her attempted tackle, allowing the Chelsea forward to curl into the far side of the net. France was almost out of sight at the start of the second half, with Hampton having to scramble behind her and grab the ball before it crossed the line, after fumbling an effort from Grace Geyoro. England hadn't even had a shot on target before it got back into the game late on. A corner was cleared only to the edge of the area for Walsh to calmly control before firing into the top right corner for only her second international goal. soccer: /hub/soccer This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Wimbledon 2025: Yuki Bhambri Keeps Indian Hopes Alive; Sriram Balaji, Bollipali Crash Out
Last Updated: Bhambri advanced to the third round of Men's Doubles at Wimbledon with Galloway. Meanwhile, Sriram Balaji, Bollipalli, Boanna, and Tyagi faced defeats. India experienced a day of mixed emotions at Wimbledon on Saturday, with Yuki Bhambri providing a boost by reaching the third round of the men's doubles, while compatriots N. Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Bollipalli exited after hard-fought second-round defeats. Yuki Bhambri, partnering with American Robert Galloway, delivered a gritty performance to secure a straight-sets victory over the pairing of Portugal's Nuno Borges and American Marcos Giron. The Indo-American duo prevailed 6–3, 7–6 in a tightly contested match to book their place in the third round. Bhambri and Galloway showed composure and resilience, especially in the second set tiebreak, holding their nerve to close out the match and continue their impressive run at the All England Club. Balaji-Reyes-Varela Fall to Fourth Seeds Meanwhile, Sriram Balaji and his Mexican partner Miguel Reyes-Varela faced a formidable test in the form of fourth seeds Marcel Granollers of Spain and Argentina's Horacio Zeballos. Despite a spirited performance, the unseeded pair were beaten 4–6, 4–6 in a match lasting one hour and 20 minutes. Balaji and Reyes-Varela put up a strong fight, pushing their more experienced opponents in several close games, but ultimately couldn't convert opportunities into a breakthrough. Bollipalli-Barrientos Push British Duo to the Limit Later in the day, Rithvik Bollipalli and Colombian partner Nicolas Barrientos took on the sixth-seeded all-British pair of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski. The match proved to be a nail-biter, particularly in the second set, but the Indian-Colombian pair fell short, losing 4–6, 6–7 (9) in one hour and 47 minutes. The second set tiebreak saw Bollipalli and Barrientos hold set points, but the experienced British team held firm to secure victory. Bopanna Out, Tyagi Crashes Earlier in the tournament, India's senior-most doubles player, Rohan Bopanna, suffered a surprise first-round exit, bringing an early end to his campaign at the grass-court major. In the junior competition, India's Krish Tyagi faced a tough opponent in the boys' singles draw. He was defeated 3–6, 3–6 by Jan Kumstat of the Czech Republic in the opening round, ending his run at the tournament. (with PTI inputs)
