Wimbledon 2025: Yuki Bhambri Keeps Indian Hopes Alive; Sriram Balaji, Bollipali Crash Out
Bhambri advanced to the third round of Men's Doubles at Wimbledon with Galloway. Meanwhile, Sriram Balaji, Bollipalli, Boanna, and Tyagi faced defeats.
India experienced a day of mixed emotions at Wimbledon on Saturday, with Yuki Bhambri providing a boost by reaching the third round of the men's doubles, while compatriots N. Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Bollipalli exited after hard-fought second-round defeats.
Yuki Bhambri, partnering with American Robert Galloway, delivered a gritty performance to secure a straight-sets victory over the pairing of Portugal's Nuno Borges and American Marcos Giron. The Indo-American duo prevailed 6–3, 7–6 in a tightly contested match to book their place in the third round.
Bhambri and Galloway showed composure and resilience, especially in the second set tiebreak, holding their nerve to close out the match and continue their impressive run at the All England Club.
Balaji-Reyes-Varela Fall to Fourth Seeds
Meanwhile, Sriram Balaji and his Mexican partner Miguel Reyes-Varela faced a formidable test in the form of fourth seeds Marcel Granollers of Spain and Argentina's Horacio Zeballos. Despite a spirited performance, the unseeded pair were beaten 4–6, 4–6 in a match lasting one hour and 20 minutes.
Balaji and Reyes-Varela put up a strong fight, pushing their more experienced opponents in several close games, but ultimately couldn't convert opportunities into a breakthrough.
Bollipalli-Barrientos Push British Duo to the Limit
Later in the day, Rithvik Bollipalli and Colombian partner Nicolas Barrientos took on the sixth-seeded all-British pair of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski. The match proved to be a nail-biter, particularly in the second set, but the Indian-Colombian pair fell short, losing 4–6, 6–7 (9) in one hour and 47 minutes.
The second set tiebreak saw Bollipalli and Barrientos hold set points, but the experienced British team held firm to secure victory.
Bopanna Out, Tyagi Crashes
Earlier in the tournament, India's senior-most doubles player, Rohan Bopanna, suffered a surprise first-round exit, bringing an early end to his campaign at the grass-court major.
In the junior competition, India's Krish Tyagi faced a tough opponent in the boys' singles draw. He was defeated 3–6, 3–6 by Jan Kumstat of the Czech Republic in the opening round, ending his run at the tournament.

Grand Chess Tour: Magnus Carlsen Wins SuperUnited Rapid And Blitz With A Round To Spare
World number one Magnus Carlsen yet again proved he is the best in the world as he won the Super United Rapid and blitz chess tournament with a round to spare while reigning world champion D. Gukesh finished third in the standings. After falling as many as four points behind Gukesh in the nine-round rapid event, Carlsen made the most of it in the blitz section games, scoring 7.5 points out of nine in the first leg. In the return games his score of four points out of first eight games was enough to grant him another tournament victory. Gukesh, who started off brilliantly in the rapid section bagging as many as 14 points went out of sorts in the blitz section scoring just 1.5 out of his first nine games. Even though he made some steady progress in the last nine blitz games, it was never enough to catch Carlsen. Carlsen ended the event with 22.5 points, 2.5 points ahead of American Wesley So who finished second while Gukesh eventually came third with 19.5. Out of the 17,5000 USD prize pool Carlsen won 40,000, Wesley 30,000 and Gukesh won 25,000 with the fact that he proved his critics wrong by performing exceptionally. Gukesh ended the event on 19.5 points, half point ahead of Alireza Firouzja of France and Duda Jan-Krzysztof of Poland. The sixth place went to Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan ahead of Fabiano Caruana of United States and Anish Giri of Holland. India's R Praggnanandhaa, after winning as many as three Classical events this year, had a rare low as he ended ninth on 15 points while Ivan Saric of Croatia was tenth on 13 points. Gukesh could have done better in a game of fluctuating fortunes had he converted his extra pawn to a victory over Praggnanandhaa in the final round game. However, as it happened, the endgame the duo reached was a theoretical draw and there was little to play for. However, the world's youngest ever world champion can take this as a positive result in the faster version of the game. F1: Norris wins rain-hit British GP thriller, cuts gap to Piastri in title race
SILVERSTONE: Lando Norris won a treacherous rain-hit British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday from his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg took third for the veteran German's first ever podium in 239 races. Briton Norris returned to a rapturous reception from his home fans as he moved to within eight points of Piastri in the drivers' standings. "It's beautiful, everything I ever dreamed of, this is everything I wanted to achieve, aside from winning the championship this is as good as it gets," beamed Norris. Piastri, who finished less than seven seconds behind Norris, threw away the win after the Australian was hit with a 10-second penalty for a safety car infringement. As last week's heatwave gave way to a more typical British summer's day -- spells of blue sky mixed with torrential showers -- drivers had to keep their wits about them with puddles forming on the track. And Norris emerged from the chaos all smiles as he added to his wins already this season in Austria, Monaco and Australia. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton came in fourth ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Piastri fell foul of the stewards when braking heavily before the safety car peeled off, a decision that left Piastri feeling robbed. "I'm not going to say much, I don't want to get myself in trouble," he said in the post-race interview. "Apparently, you can't brake behind the safety car anymore," he added. For Hulkenberg, 37, this was a day to remember as he climbed the podium for the first time since joining the F1 grid way back in 2010. "Podium - P3 baby!" said his ecstatic race engineer on the team radio after he crossed the line. "I don't think I can comprehend what we've just done," replied the German. Pierre Gasly's Alpine took sixth, with Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Alex Albon (Williams), Fernando Alonso in the other Aston and George Russell (Mercedes) rounding out the top 10.

'Outstanding Test Match': ICC Chief Jay Shah Congratulates India For Thrashing England
Last Updated: India scripted history with their first Test win at Edgbaston, thrashing England by 336 runs as Gill's 430 runs and Akash Deep's 10-wicket haul led a stunning comeback. A new chapter was added to India's rich cricketing history on Sunday night when they defeated England by 336 runs in the second Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Birmingham. The victory was special as it was India's first at Edgbaston. India displayed complete teamwork in bouncing back after going 0-1 down following the loss at Headingley in the first Test. Akash Deep rose to the occasion in Jasprit Bumrah's absence and took a match haul of 10 wickets, including a maiden five-for – 6/99 in the second innings – as England folded for 271 while chasing an improbable 608. Gill's 269 and 161 set up the match, making him the first Indian batter to score 400-plus runs in a Test match. The world bowed down to the Indian cricket team for their wonderful win in Birmingham. ICC chief Jay Shah took to microblogging site X to heap praise on Shubman Gill's Team India, lauding the resilience shown by the young unit against a tough English side. 'An outstanding Test match showcasing the depth and resilience of Indian cricket," Shah wrote. '@ShubmanGill's 269 & 161 were innings of rare quality, while Akashdeep's 10-wicket haul marked a breakthrough performance. Valuable contributions from @imjadeja and @RishabhPant17 added to a well-earned team win. Looking forward to the next contest at Lord's. #INDvENG," he added. England resumed at 72/3, and Akash struck early, dismissing Pope and Brook. Despite personal hardships – his sister battling cancer – Akash stayed focused. Jamie Smith's 88 was England's lone resistance before a slow bouncer from Akash ended his innings, giving the pacer his maiden Test five-for. He fittingly took the final wicket to complete a 10/187 match haul. Gill pouched the final catch, celebrating his first win as Test captain. Siraj took 6/70 in the first innings, while Jadeja and Sundar added pressure with spin. With Bumrah set to return, and Akash impressing with his stump-hitting accuracy, India head to Lord's with renewed confidence. (With PTI Inputs) First Published:
