Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley refuses to let the public's opinion of him dictate his decisions off the field.
Earlier this year, Barkley played a round of golf with President Donald Trump in Bedminster, New Jersey. He also went to the White House with several Eagles players and coaches to celebrate their victory in Super Bowl LIX. Unsurprisingly, countless football fans criticized the All-Pro running back for spending time with the president.
"Some people are really upset cause I played golf and flew to the White House with the PRESIDENT," Barkley wrote on the platform formerly known as Twitter. "Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand. Just golfed with Obama not too long ago…and look forward to finishing my round with Trump! Now ya get out my mentions with all this politics and have [an] amazing day."
Just a few days ago, Trump signed an executive order to bring back the Presidential Fitness Test.
"From the late 1950s until 2013, graduate scholars all across our country competed against each other in the Presidential Fitness Test, and it was a big deal," Trump said. "This was a wonderful tradition, and we're bringing it back."
As part of this initiative, Trump created the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. It features a plethora of athletes, such as Bryson DeChambeau, Harrison Butker and Nick Bosa.
Barkley doubled down on his beliefs this past week by joining the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition.
Shortly after it was revealed that Barkley is part of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, fans went on social media to share their thoughts.
Let's just say the public is torn on Barkley's decision.
"Shameful for the Eagles," one fan said.
"Great to see top sports figures stepping up for Trump and his cabinet, showing passionate support for the health, well-being, and love of Americans," a second fan commented.
"Showed the world who he is the minute he left NYC," a third fan wrote.
"Won a ring and decided to tank his PR for no reason," another fan said.
At the end of the day, Barkley is going to do what he believes is best for him.
We'll see if Barkley's alliance with Trump actually helps the next generation of athletes stay fit.NFL Fans Torn On Saquon Barkley's Alliance With President Trump first appeared on The Spun on Aug 3, 2025

Democrats Schumer, Jeffries demand meeting with GOP to avert government shutdown

Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries Monday called on their Republican counterparts to meet immediately to avert a government shutdown looming as soon as the end of next month. The Democratic congressional leaders, both of whom are from New York, called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-South Dakota, and Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, to sit down this week to discuss a plan to pass next year's budget, which would normally require negotiation with the minority party to secure the 60 votes needed in the Senate to avoid a filibuster. 'We have the responsibility to govern for all Americans and work on a bipartisan basis to avert a painful, unnecessary shutdown at the end of September,' Schumer and Jeffries wrote. The Democratic leaders noted they are willing to work with Republicans on a bipartisan basis to negotiate a budget deal that would keep the government open past Sept. 30. But they accused President Donald Trump and GOP leaders of plotting to govern without any input from Democrats and shut down the government if they don't get their way. 'Many within your party are preparing to 'go it alone' and continue to legislate on a solely Republican basis,' the Democratic leaders wrote. Government funding will expire Sept. 30. Lawmakers say to prevent a shutdown Congress will likely need to pass a stopgap funding measure when lawmakers return to Washington, D.C., after Labor Day. In exchange for their cooperation in passing new budget measures, Democrats want Republicans to agree not to turn around later in the year and pass a rescissions package cutting some of that same funding. Republicans recently voted to claw back $9 billion in previously appropriated funding and defunded the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, taking advantage of the legislative loophole that rescissions only require a simple majority in the Senate, not a 60-vote bipartisan supermajority. Schumer and Jeffries are also pressing for the administration to release funding it has unilaterally held up even though it was allocated by Congress last year. Republicans have suggested they may seek to pass one or more policy bills before the midterm elections using the arcane reconciliation process, like they successfully did with Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill. That measure, which polls say is very unpopular with voters, enacted draconian cuts to health care spending to bankroll tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporations. _____

Recount for New Jersey's 39th District has begun. See who will pay for it

The official recount of the 39th Legislative District Democratic General Assembly from the June primary results began on Monday, Aug. 4. Candidate David Jiang, who came in third place with 8,317 votes, requested the recount. Jiang's running mate, Andrew LaBruno, received the nomination with the most votes at 9,137. Donna Abene received 8,454 votes in second place — 137 votes more than Jiang. Candidate Damon Englese came in fourth place with 6,137 votes. Only the first and second-place finishers will be on the November ballot for the two General Assembly seats and will face Republican incumbents Robert Auth and John Azzariti Jr. on Nov. 4. Board of Elections Chairman Richard Miller said, vote-wise, there is a big gap, but percentage-wise, it is 0.43% — it was a close race. Story continues below photo gallery. "The candidate felt that he wanted to do this, and the judge ruled that we should hold the recount," Miller said. "I don't think he will pick up that many votes, but you never know and he's entitled to this, so we are proceeding with it." A candidate who calls for a recount will pay a percentage of the total cost. Miller said the board of elections will cover about $20,000 for the recount, and the candidate will be charged approximately $2,500. "It's definitely an expense, but it's what the judge ruled," Miller said. "This is democracy at work. Sometimes we don't agree because of the cost, but you have to do what you have to do." Story continues below photo gallery. At 11 a.m. on Aug. 4, a team of people began the hand count of the 8,000 votes that were mailed in, as well as the provisional ballots from the 28 towns that fall under the 39th District. There will be two teams with a designated commissioner cross-checking the names and ballots. This is the first district-wide recount in at least the last 14 years, Miller said. Assembly District 39 is comprised of Bergen County municipalities Allendale, Alpine, Closter, Cresskill, Demarest, Dumont, Emerson, Harrington Park, Haworth, Hillsdale, Ho-Ho-Kus, Mahwah, Midland Park, Montvale, Northvale, Norwood, Oakland, Old Tappan, Park Ridge, Ramsey, River Vale, Rockleigh, Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, Waldwick, Washington (Bergen), Westwood and Woodcliff Lake. LaBruno and Jiang's website said it's "time to flip the 39th," a district that has not elected a Democrat since 1978. "We're proud to share that Andrew has won a seat on the slate by a healthy margin — and we're still waiting on final vote-by-mail and provisional ballot counts to see if we can get David across the finish line. We're staying hopeful and optimistic while we wait for the final results," the last update on their campaign website said. A message for comment left on their website was not immediately returned. "We're incredibly proud of this campaign — powered by the people. Every door knocked, every conversation had, and every sign planted was driven by real grassroots energy," their campaign website said. "The preliminary results showed your efforts: LD39 had an impressive 36% voter turnout, compared to last year (22%) and 2023 (12%)." LaBruno and Jiang were part of Steven Fulop's team as the Jersey City mayor sought the Democratic nomination for New Jersey governor. Mikie Sherrill received the Democratic nomination and Jack Ciattarelli the Republican in June's primary.
