Andhra Pradesh doubles horticulture subsidies to support chilli farmers in Palnadu
Speaking to TNIE, Palnadu District Horticulture Officer (DHO) Ramana Reddy said that over 90,000 farmers are engaged in horticulture in the district, out of which over 85% farmers are involved in chilli cultivation.
However, the plummeting price of various chilli varieties led to widespread losses. 'To prevent losses and benefit the farmers, the State government has doubled subsidies for horticultural crops in 2025-26. This substantial increase will encourage more farmers to shift to horticulture, which offers better returns than traditional crops,' he said.
The revamped support scheme includes not just the distribution of fruit saplings, but a comprehensive three-year subsidy covering maintenance, irrigation, fertilisers, and pesticides. Under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), small and marginal farmers with up to five acres of land are eligible for 100% subsidy-including free saplings and full support for orchard development.

Kerala to submit Outer Ring Road project to Centre for environmental clearance
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A high-level meeting convened by the principal secretary to the chief minister with officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), district administration, and revenue department ended without a clear decision on the timeline for disbursing compensation to landowners who gave up their land for the Outer Ring Road (ORR) project. Official sources told TNIE that the state government will submit the project for environmental clearance from the Union government this week. 'Compensation can only be released once the Centre approves the project. The state will be submitting the proposal for environmental clearance by tomorrow. We hope there will not be any further delay in getting the approval from the project. But we don't know when this will happen,' said an official source. With no decision or clarity on the disbursal of compensation, the land owners are on a warpath. The representatives of the action council are planning to meet the district collector on Friday.

Flipkart announces USD 50 million ESOP buyback; to benefit over 7,000 employees
BENGALURU: Ecommerce major Flipkart has announced an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) buyback valued at USD 50 million (about Rs 428 crore) and this is expected to benefit about 7,000 employees. A Flipkart spokesperson confirmed the ESOP buyback to TNIE. This comes at a time when the Walmart-owned ecommerce firm prepares for an initial public offering that is expected in early 2026. Earlier in 2023, the company announced a USD 700 million ESOP buyback. In a note to employees, Flipkart group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy said the board has approved a discretionary ESOP liquidity opportunity (under the Flipkart Stock Option Plan 2013) wherein, all active employees as on July 5, 2025 will have the opportunity to liquidate up to 5% of their outstanding options vested in the last three preceding years- between July 6, 2022 to July 5, 2025. "The liquidation of the options will be at a price of USD 174.32 per option, and the payment will be made in August 2025," he said in the note. If the company achieves key goals committed to the board by the end of the year, Krishnamurthy said they will unlock another 5% ESOP Liquidity event early next year. He also informed in the note that the company's core businesses are faring well and quick commerce continues to scale at an unprecedented pace. He also said that the company's initiatives to reimagine customer experience for Gen Z through video-led, trend-first, AI-driven conversational commerce are breaking new ground, positioning them as innovators in a rapidly evolving market.

Centre releases Rs 180 crore for pending NREGA bills
GUNTUR: In a major relief to thousands of small-scale contractors in Andhra Pradesh, the Central government has released Rs 180 crore to clear long-pending bills under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGA). The payments relate to works executed between 2014 and 2019, which had remained unpaid during the previous YSRCP regime. Announcing the release on Thursday, Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandrasekhar said, 'This is long-overdue justice. The previous government blocked payments, falsely claiming the works never occurred. But truth has prevailed.' Over Rs 250–300 crore worth of NREGA works, involving 3.5 lakh small contractors, had been stalled. The previous government allegedly shut down projects and froze billing using software restrictions. 'Not a single rupee was paid for six years,' Pemmasani noted. Following the formation of the coalition government, coordinated efforts between the Centre and State Rural Development departments led to the revival of old software and reopening of nearly 3.5 lakh disputed work records. The Rs 180 crore release will enable payments ranging from Rs 5–15 lakh per contractor. The State government has also committed matching funds, with instructions to complete payments within 30 days. Dr Pemmasani credited CM Nara Lokesh and Minister Pawan Kalyan for enabling the breakthrough.
