Many opt for premium travel insurance cover amid global flight disruptions

Pune: Holiday and business travellers are now increasingly purchasing more expensive travel insurance policies, experts said, as anxieties mounted over possible disruptions such as Covid surges, war, hospitalizations abroad and issues with airline safety.
In Pune too, flyers said they did not mind paying the premium, as long as a range of unforeseen events were covered. "A basic travel insurance policy to Thailand typically costs Rs 500-600 for a week, but I paid Rs 1,100 for one that also covered medical emergencies and theft," said Rahul Sejpal, a resident of Wanowrie, who flew recently to the southeast Asian country.
Naresh Upadhyay, a resident of Hadapsar, also purchased an expensive insurance cover for an upcoming Europe trip.
"There have been serious flight disruptions due to the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. So I opted for a wider insurance cover, one that accounts for these uncertainties," he said.
Meet Kapadia, head of travel insurance at PolicyBazaar, said 62% of travellers today pick policies with coverage of $250,000 (over Rs 2 crore) or more, up from the earlier benchmark of $100,000 (over Rs 86 lakh). Kapadia said: "We've observed a clear shift towards higher-value coverage, especially for destinations such as Europe.

Data from real-time plane-tracker FlightRadar24 showed thinning air traffic over regions of Israel, Iraq, Iran and Ukraine as pilots squeezed into safe corridors that avoided these conflict zones.
Besides geopolitics, geological events too have hit headlines. The recent eruptions of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in Indonesia grounded at least 87 flights to and from Bali — 66 international and 21 domestic ones. Bali airport officials said the volcano impacted critical air connections to Australia, Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia.
The flights resumed three days later, on Thursday, June 19.
"There may be a shift towards purchasing additional covers along with travel insurance as a standard part of people's travel preparations," said Bhaskar Nerurkar, head of the health administration team at Bajaj Allianz General Insurance.
"Many individuals are now proactively seeking information about various aspects of their policies, particularly regarding trip cancellations, medical emergencies, cancellations for any reason, and protections against geopolitical disruptions," he said.
Surender Tonk, vice President of Insurance Brokers Association of India (IBAI), said Covid was another factor. Earlier this month, at least 5 countries and regions, including Hong Kong and parts of US - all experiencing upticks of cases - sent out travel advisories urging people to avoid non-essential travel.
"People are opting and preferring to go for higher insured travel insurance policies due to these uncertainties," Tonk said. "The Covid-19 pandemic raised awareness related to travel risks and hence witnessed more demand for comprehensive travel insurance policies," he added.

"It is not the machine, but the man who rides it. I gave it a try with a scooter last year. I traversed nearly 2,000 km in the Himalayan range and decided to use a moped this time," he said. "While a moped is easy to manoeuvre, it lacks the momentum needed to tackle mountain stretches. The one I am using can reach a speed of up to 60 km. But a moped is easier as there are areas where the rider has to drag a two-wheeler," he said. Jabalpur-Raipur and Rewa-Pune express trains flagged off
In a major boost to inter-state travel, Jabalpur-Raipur and Rewa-Pune Express trains were flagged off on Sunday. The new services are set to improve connectivity across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav flagged off the new services via video conferencing from Bhavnagar and Ujjain, respectively. The launch also marked the commencement of a new Bhavnagar-Ayodhya Express train service. An official release stated that the new services would enhance connectivity across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. The new trains connecting Jabalpur with Raipur, Rewa with Pune (Hadapsar), and Bhavnagar with Ayodhya mark a significant expansion of the national railway network, it said. Addressing the event, Vaishnaw said Prime Minister Modi shares an emotional bond with the Indian Railways, which is the mainstay of travel for the poor and middle classes. Tourism officials said Kainchi Dham was selected as the first location for the pilot study due to its consistently high footfall, especially in June during the annual bhandara in memory of Neem Karoli Baba. The temple draws lakhs of devotees annually and was already being monitored as a high-density spiritual site. The July stampede at Mansa Devi occurred on the first Monday of Shravan, a day that traditionally sees large turnouts, prompting urgent safety reviews at other key shrines. "We've started the assessment from Kainchi Dham. The survey will determine the number of pilgrims and tourists visiting the shrine daily, as well as the volume of vehicles arriving in the area," an official said. Haridwar DM Mayur Dixit told TOI that a combination of short- and long-term measures had been rolled out at Mansa Devi temple following the stampede. "We have discussed a long-term redevelopment plan with senior officials, which includes widening of the pedestrian route and overall infrastructure upgrades at the temple. A detailed proposal has also been sent for consideration under the Kumbh Mela budget," he said. As part of immediate safety steps, all shops located within the temple complex and along the pedestrian route have been shut. A primary health centre will be built on-site to handle medical emergencies. The administration has also created a designated holding area within the premises and sealed the rear gate for routine use—it will now be used only as an emergency exit. To improve access and crowd movement, encroachments have been removed from the temple's approach routes. Authorities are also planning to install a permanent police check post in the area. The temple committee has been asked to deploy private security personnel and sanitation workers to ensure hygiene and order during busy hours. Dixit said a proposal had been submitted to repair and upgrade the hill bypass route to help manage pilgrim flow during peak seasons. He added that the entire temple and surrounding walkways would soon be brought under full CCTV surveillance for real-time crowd management and rapid emergency response. Officials said the survey results will help develop customised crowd management plans based on each site's topography and infrastructure. The goal is to ensure a safer, more organised pilgrimage experience for devotees, particularly during high-traffic days such as festivals and melas.
