Rave reviews for Harimau Malaya debutants Ubaidullah and Palmero

The Star30-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The future of Harimau Malaya may have just taken its first confident stride against Cape Verde and it came in the form of two debutants - Ubaidullah Samsul Fazili and Gabriel Palmero.
While the international friendly ended in a 1-1 draw at the Cheras Football Stadium on Thursday, it was the composure and promise shown by Ubaidullah and Palmero that stole the headlines and the trust of national coach Peter Cklamovski.
Ubaidullah, a 21-year-old centreback from Terengganu, was handed his first senior cap and he grew into the game in the most encouraging fashion.
The nerves were evident in the opening 45 minutes but the second half belonged to him. With each tackle, pass, and confident surge from the backline, he embodied the spirit of a defender coming of age.
'I am proud to wear the colours of the nation,' said Ubaidullah.
'This was my first game for Malaysia, so there were jitters, especially in the first half. I made some mistakes but during half-time, the coaches and teammates reminded me to play my game. That gave me the push I needed.'
By full-time, he had earned the man-of-the-match award, a testament to the composure he displayed against a team ranked 72nd in the world. His maturity belied his age.
'Football is about using every chance that comes your way. You are never a finished product - every day, you're learning,' he added.
'I enjoy playing in a back three and have done it for my club and the Under-23s. The intensity at the international level is higher but I will adapt.'
His performance will only add to his growing stock, with reports of potential loan moves to Thailand surfacing earlier this year.
On the other side of the pitch, Palmero - the Spanish-born wingback from CD Tenerife - brought composure and clarity on the flanks.
The 23-year-old's touches were clean, his positioning intelligent, and his connection with teammates seamless, despite this being his first outing in Malaysian colours.
'I can do better,' Palmero said humbly.
'I keep working to be the best version of myself. But football is a language, and I try to speak it fluently. Malaysia is in my heart.'
Cklamovski, known for his focus on development and detail, was impressed by both players.
'We had six Under-21 players in our first phase. They've all shown the right mentality and adjusted to the intensity we demand,' said the Australian tactician.
'Ubaidullah showed strong character. If we're talking about five years down the line, at a World Cup, he will be at the perfect age to peak. This is the mentality we want.'
''As for Palmero, he came from Spain, prepared well and connected with the group.
''It's not easy facing a world-class opponent in your first match, but he put in a solid individual performance.'

Soccer-Ronaldo prefers rest to playing in Club World Cup

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Saudi Pro League - Al Nassr v Al Khaleej - Al-Awwal Park, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - May 21, 2025 Al Nassr's Cristiano Ronaldo before the match REUTERS/Hamad I Mohammed/File Photo (Reuters) -Cristiano Ronaldo preferred to take a rest rather than play in the revamped Club World Cup, the Portuguese international said on Saturday after renewing his contract with Al-Nassr. The Saudi Pro League club announced on Thursday that Ronaldo had signed a two-year contract which would keep him at the club past his 42nd birthday. Speculation over the 40-year-old's plans intensified last month when FIFA President Gianni Infantino said discussions were underway about Ronaldo playing in the Club World Cup, despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify. "I had some offers to play in the World Cup but I think it didn't make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long as it is the World Cup season at the end of the year," Ronaldo said in a video posted by Al-Nassr on X. "I want to be ready not only for Al-Nassr but also for the national team. So, this is why I decided to play the last game for the Nations League and not listen to anything," he added. "And of course, to be in this club, which I love". Ronaldo scored for Portugal in the Nations League final against Spain earlier this month which ended 2-2 before his side went on to beat the European champions on penalties. The Portugal captain said his aim in staying at Al-Nassr was to win a major trophy with the Riyadh-based side. "My goal, it's always to win something important for Al-Nassr. And of course I still believe in that" Ronaldo added. "This is why I renewed the two years more because I believe that I will be a champion in Saudi Arabia". Ronaldo, who joined Al-Nassr in 2022 after leaving Manchester United as a free agent, has scored 93 goals in 105 appearances for them in all competitions. Ronaldo is also eyeing the 1,000-goal milestone in his career. He has scored 794 goals in club football and 138 for Portugal to take his tally to 932. Motor racing-Stella proud of Norris after 'best qualifying of the year'

Formula One F1 - Austrian Grand Prix - Red Bull Ring, Spielberg, Austria - June 27, 2025 McLaren's Lando Norris during practice REUTERS/Leonhard Foeger SPIELBERG, Austria (Reuters) -McLaren team boss Andrea Stella said he was proud of Lando Norris's performance after the Briton took a dominant pole position in Austria in what he called his best qualifying of the year. Norris led every phase, going fastest in Friday and Saturday practice, a decisive response to a poor qualifying in Canada and his collision with championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri in that race two weeks ago. That incident, which he accepted blame for, left Norris 22 points behind Piastri. "Even in Canada, after reviewing the weekend with Lando and his engineers, we always said the speed was there," Stella told Sky Sports television. "When he had the little contact with the wall in qualifying, he was on track for a pole position. And in the race, he was one of the fastest, if not the fastest car. The speed was always there. We needed to polish the execution. "I'm really proud of Lando today. Not only he scored a pole position, but it's a dominant pole position, a pretty remarkable lap time." Norris was more than half a second faster than his closest rival, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, on the shortest lap of the season. The Briton said the upgraded car felt strong and quick. Qualifying, a strong point last year, has become more of a problem this season, but Norris seemed to have rectified some of the issues. "It was easily my best qualifying of the year from a delivery point of view from every single lap I did. I still made a couple of mistakes here and there, but none that cost me a lap or anything," he said. "I think on deliveries, consistency and of course putting it in when it counts in Q3 (it) was easily the best lap I've done for this whole season, probably even better than Monaco, honestly. "Maybe not as exciting a lap as Monaco, but definitely a better put-together lap than I did there." Norris won from pole in Monaco, with the fastest lap, as he did in the Australian season-opener. "It shows that the feelings I've been requiring, the feelings that I've not been getting as easily, when they are more my way and more where I want them to be, I can put in better performances and have days like today," he said. Soccer-FIFA's Wenger promises better pitch quality at 2026 World Cup

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Champions League - Semi Final - First Leg - Arsenal v Paris Saint Germain - Emirates Stadium, London, Britain - April 29, 2025 Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger before the match Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Couldridge/File Photo MIAMI (Reuters) -FIFA's Global Football Development chief Arsene Wenger acknowledged that the quality of pitches hosting Club World Cup matches in the U.S. was not good enough, but insisted it would be better when the country co-hosts the 2026 World Cup. The pitches, often very dry and sprinkled with water during cooling breaks or at halftime, have been widely criticised, mainly by coaches and players of the European teams taking part. "I've been personally on the pitch at Orlando," former Arsenal manager Wenger said on Saturday. "It's not at the level that the European clubs are used to because it's not perfect, but that will be rectified for the World Cup next year." Paris St Germain coach Luis Enrique raised the issue early in the expanded Club World Cup tournament. "The ball bounces like a rabbit," Luis Enrique said after his team's opening 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid. "Today, for example, the field used to be artificial turf, and now it's natural grass laid over it, which means it has to be watered manually. It's a big problem for the way we play." "FIFA really needs to take this seriously. Not just the stadium fields but also the training pitches. If we're calling this the best club tournament in the world, it should have world‑class facilities. I can't imagine an NBA game played on a court full of holes."
