Malaysia leads ASEAN push for regional peace and human rights advancement
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the study also offers key policy recommendations to support ASEAN initiatives to respect human rights and implement practices to secure regional peace and security in line with the ASEAN Community Vision 2025.
It also reaffirmed that the right to peace is a fundamental human right, and is essential for sustainable development, human dignity, and the enjoyment of all other rights.
Speaking at the launch of the study, Malaysia's representative to AICHR and AICHR Chair 2025, Edmund Bon Tai Soon, commended the study, describing it as a springboard for actions that strengthen ASEAN's broad commitment to peace and respect for human rights.
'This thematic study is very important as there are still many regional problems and conflict in ASEAN and also globally.
'Spillover conflict issues that become region-centric cannot always be considered internal affairs of ASEAN Member States. This is reflected in the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and ASEAN's initiatives on conflict prevention, as well as civilian and human rights protection.'
He added that ASEAN is working to address regional and international challenges, including the situation in Gaza and situational conflicts within the region, by taking positions to improve conditions on the ground.
Meanwhile, AICHR will organise a six-part AICHR Regional Training Programme on Human Rights on July 2 to build capacity of ASEAN officials in conflict prevention and to promote sustainable peace through the practical application of human rights principles.
The programme, tilted 'Workshops on Intersection Between Conflict and Human Rights: Pathways and Approaches to Peace in ASEAN' also aims to strengthen ASEAN's collective ability to implement proactive peacebuilding strategies.
Both initiatives demonstrate Malaysia's leadership as the ASEAN Chair in implementing its inclusivity and sustainability agenda, while reinforcing ASEAN strategic priorities to enhance regional peace, strengthen multilateralism, and foster a resilient, active, and people-centred ASEAN Community.

Singapore and Cambodia to expand collaboration in renewable energy, carbon markets and agri-trade
SINGAPORE: Singapore and Cambodia will deepen their collaboration in several areas, including renewable energy, high-quality carbon credits and trade in food products, as the two countries mark 60 years of diplomatic relations. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said this on Wednesday (July 2) in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, the latest in his series of introductory visits to Asean capitals. At a luncheon hosted by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace, PM Wong thanked Manet for his invitation to visit and said the two countries' relationship had continued to grow from strength to strength over the last 60 years. 'Our ties... were built on the strong foundation laid by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and His Majesty King-Father Norodom Sihanouk,' PM Wong said in a toast speech. 'It is a foundation of mutual respect, trust and friendship that continues to guide our relationship today.' He noted that Singapore is one of Cambodia's largest investors and trading partners. In 2024, the Republic was Cambodia's third-largest foreign investor, with bilateral trade between the countries increasing 7.1 per cent year on year to S$4.83 billion. During his visit, PM Wong called on Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni at the Royal Palace. He also called on Senate President Hun Sen. At his meeting with Manet, the two leaders discussed several priority areas of cooperation. The first such area is renewable energy, in which the two countries' cooperation will help build a greener and more interconnected Asean, said PM Wong. He cited a project for Singapore to, which will be a key building block towards an Asean Power Grid. The plan is for the grid to link up the electricity networks of the group's member countries and enable cross-border power trading by 2045. Some progress has already been made on this front, with Singapore's Keppel having inked a pact in 2023 with Cambodia's Royal Group Power for the long-term import and sale of 1 GW of low-carbon electricity. In the area of high-quality carbon credits, the countries are working together on an implementation agreement for an earlier memorandum of understanding. 'This will mobilise financing for clean-energy projects, uplift rural communities and improve livelihoods, while enabling both our countries to hit our net-zero goals,' said PM Wong. 'We are also keen to diversify our sources of food imports, so closer collaboration in this area will be mutually beneficial for both our countries,' said PM Wong. Both countries also agreed to continue working to strengthen Asean centrality and unity, to keep the grouping relevant and advance the region's collective interests. He added that Singapore and Cambodia continue to be steadfast partners in human development, with nearly 19,000 Cambodian officials having received training in areas like public health, digital governance and public administration under the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP). Malaysia, Italy agree peace, stability are keys to economic progress
ROME: Malaysia and Italy agree that peace and stability are the keys for free trade, which serves as the foundation for global economic progress. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia deserves attention due to its strategic position within Asean and its consistent economic growth. "Malaysia, as the centre of Asean, is deeply committed to the Asean framework. We are very fortunate, despite some minor issues here and there, "Asean remains the most peaceful region in the world and the fastest-growing economy globally. "Our policy of centrality involves engagement with all countries. We are also fortunate that our geographical location is far from conflict zones like Gaza and Ukraine. "Despite that, we still adhere to the principles of democracy and reform and more importantly, to world peace and stability," he said. Anwar made these remarks during his opening speech at the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable held here. Also present was Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, who is also the country's foreign affairs and international cooperation minister. In his speech, Tajani echoed Anwar's views, stating that Italy's main objective is to expand trade opportunities through a network of trade agreements, including those with the European Union, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. "Asia is a key area for Italy's global economic outlook, not only because of its strategic role in international trade but also due to the growing demand for high-value-added goods and services from rapidly developing economies in the region," he said. Highlighting the strong Putrajaya-Rome relationship, Tajani expressed confidence that further cooperation could be explored between the two countries. Malaysia is among the key countries identified for growth, with Tajani emphasising factors such as rising domestic consumption, infrastructure improvements and increased openness to international trade. Italy's exports to Asean countries, including Malaysia, are projected to rise by 10.3 per cent in 2024, reaching €10.7 billion (about RM53.24 billion). Italy's total exports last year stood at €623.5 billion, representing 40 per cent of its gross domestic product. Exports to non-EU countries increased to €305.4 billion, up by 1.2 per cent. Italy is currently the sixth-largest exporter in the world and leads Europe in the diversity of its export goods.
