Cambodia's intense raids expose foreign women's involvement in scam centres
PHNOM PENH (Bernama): About 20 per cent of suspects arrested in Cambodia this week for alleged online scam crimes are women from developing countries.
The state media outlet Agence Kampuchea Presse reported that 2,270 suspects were detained across Cambodia, mostly from Southeast Asian and South Asian countries.
Among those arrested, more than 400 women came from Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Vietnam.
"Many women go abroad to take up risky jobs because of poverty. They go overseas just to try their luck and sometimes end up in dangerous jobs.
"There are fewer employment opportunities in Bangladesh, especially for women. And there are no strict rules and regulations to protect women,' Organisation for Women Development in Bangladesh Chief Executive Shyamoli Mazumder told Bernama from Dhaka.
In the latest crime-busting operation, 27 Bangladeshi women were detained.
The Secretariat of the Commission for Combatting Technology Fraud released this data on July 18, following a nationwide operation by security personnel to eliminate cyber crimes.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed law enforcement authorities to dismantle online scam operations, resulting in a coordinated crackdown on these criminal activities.
Since the prime minister's announcement, authorities have carried out major operations in 12 capitals across the kingdom, exposing major online scam centres which led to the arrest of thousands of workers.
Most of the online scam operations are run by foreign syndicates and are linked to human trafficking.
Regional governments from Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar are cleaning up notorious cybercrime hubs that have been luring young job seekers, who are promised attractive salaries and perks but end up in online crimes.
According to Myanmar's Information Ministry, about 9,000 foreign nationals engaged in online gambling and internet scams were arrested between January and May this year.
The Interpol in its June report highlighted the risks of human trafficking for forced online fraud centres, where victims are drawn into fake schemes through false job advertisements and detained in compounds where they are forced to carry out online scams.
Initially, online scam centres were concentrated in South-East Asia and most human trafficking victims were Chinese-speaking and sourced from Asia.
The past three years have witnessed victims trafficked into Southeast Asia from faraway regions.
"This geographical expansion has been facilitated both by transnational organised crime groups linked to Asia and through similar methods employed by local or regional groups,' said Interpol. - Bernama

Missing man found drowned in Sungai Long
KUALA LUMPUR: A young man reported missing since last Thursday (July 17) was found drowned in Tasik Bukit Enggang, Sungai Long in Kajang on Monday morning. Kajang police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said his team received a report at 7.30am from a local man fishing at the lake. He said a team of police and Fire and Rescue Department personnel went to the scene to help recover the victim's body, which was found floating in the middle of the lake about 10 feet (3.05 metres) from the banks. "Investigations found that the victim was a 25-year-old local man who was reported missing last Thursday in Puchong. A Honda RS150 motorcycle and a black helmet, believed to be the victim's, were also found on the side of the road near Monkey Canopy, Sungai Long," he said in a statement yesterday. Naazron said the body was sent to Kajang Hospital for a post-mortem, with drowning confirmed as the cause of death. A physical examination also found no signs of injury linked to criminal elements. Doctor Arrested Again Over Molest Claim By Another Patient
BALIK PULAU, July 22 (Bernama) -- A doctor has been arrested again for investigations into an alleged molestation of a female patient at a private clinic in Bayan Baru here. Barat Daya police chief ACP Sazalee Adam said the 43-year-old male doctor was detained at the Barat Daya police headquarters (IPD) at 8 pm yesterday after being asked to attend a query into the case. "Police received a report regarding the incident from a woman who claimed that at 11.46 am on June 29, she had sought treatment at a private clinic in Bayan Baru for abdominal pains. "While in the examination room, the doctor treating her told her to take off her clothes and touched her breasts. The victim, who was unhappy with the conduct, filed a police report regarding the incident on July 18," he said when contacted by Bernama today. He said following the detention of the doctor, who works at a hospital in the state, police also seized a mobile phone belonging to him to help in the investigation. Meanwhile, acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin confirmed with Bernama that the doctor was the same medical officer who was previously arrested for indecent behaviour towards female patients in the state. He said the man has been remanded for three days until July 23 to assist in investigations under Section 354 of the Penal Code. Previous media reports said a doctor was detained three times after allegations of indecent behaviour at a hospital and two private clinics in the Northeast district involving three female victims. The man was investigated then under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting modesty and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for indecent conduct.

DOE Steps Up Enforcement To Prevent Open Burning Amid Haze
KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- As a proactive preventive measure, the Department of Environment (DOE) has intensified ground patrols and physical monitoring in fire-prone areas, particularly agricultural lands, peatlands, bush areas, abandoned plantations, and landfills identified as high-risk. DOE director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said the department had been conducting patrols and enforcement operations to prevent open burning, which contributes to the haze, especially in the current hot and dry weather. "Since July 8, 2025, the delegation of authority to various enforcement agencies has come into effect. This strategic initiative is aimed at strengthening enforcement actions on the ground, particularly in addressing the issue of open burning, which contributes to haze situations. "This delegation of authority allows swift, integrated and more comprehensive actions to be implemented quickly by the relevant agencies," he said in a statement today. He said that as of July 21, 2025, the DOE had conducted 4,121 ground patrols and 640 drone surveillance operations. In terms of enforcement action, the DOE had issued 58 directives, initiated 27 court actions and imposed 59 compounds on parties found to have committed open burning offences throughout 2025. Wan Abdul Latiff said that for better preparedness and coordination, the National Open Burning Action Plan and the National Haze Action Plan had also been activated since Feb 26 to coordinate government agency responses in addressing open burning and managing haze situations in the country. "In addition, joint patrols and monitoring efforts are also being conducted with strategic partner agencies such as the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (MCDF) and other enforcement agencies at the state and district levels," he said. He also urged the public not to carry out any form of open burning, particularly for agricultural purposes such as land clearing, disposal of agricultural waste or abandoned land. "Stern action will be taken against individuals or parties found to be in violation of Section 29A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974. Offenders convicted of open burning can be fined up to RM1 million or imprisoned for up to five years, or both.
