Analysts doubt Azmin's claim that PN can win 10 more seats in Selangor

By: Chia Wan Rou, FMT Text Size: Selangor PN chief Azmin Ali recently claimed that the coalition could take over the Selangor government by winning 10 more seats at the next state election. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Analysts have questioned the recent claim by Selangor Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief Azmin Ali that the coalition is capable of winning 10 more seats at the next state election. Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the voter demographics in several mixed constituencies would make it difficult for PN to gain ground.
Advertisement He added that Azmin's confidence could be based on data from the previous state election. 'If PN secures 7,000 votes in the constituencies it previously lost, it might have a chance of forming the state government. 'But in reality… PN's chances in Selangor are slim,' he said. Azmin had said in his speech at a Selangor Bersatu event that PN could take over the state government by winning 10 more seats. PN currently holds 22 of the 56 seats in the Selangor state assembly. Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said dissatisfaction among Umno members with the Barisan Nasional-Pakatan Harapan (BN–PH) alliance was a key factor in PN's previous gains at the last state election in 2023. He said about 20% of Umno voters shifted their support during that election as they were influenced by negative portrayals of DAP – especially in Malay-majority areas – which contributed to PN's success. 'However, after more than two years, the unity government's image has improved and public confidence has grown. Many Umno members who backed PN may now return to Umno,' he said. 'PN may win a few more seats, but likely not more than in the last election,' he added. The PH-BN alliance lost ground to PN at the August 2023 state election, claiming victory in 34 seats – 32 of which were won by PH – compared to the 2018 election when PH won 51 of the 56 seats. BN won four seats then, and PAS one. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Give addendum same respect as unity govt order, says Najib's son
Nizar Najib said failure to implement the royal order could damage public trust in the government and respect for royal directives. KUALA LUMPUR : The government has been urged by Nizar Najib, son of former prime minister Najib Razak, to accord the same respect and urgency to a royal order on his father's house arrest request as it did to the call that led to the formation of the unity government. 'This issue (of the addendum) has been going on forever. How much longer are we going to drag this out when the decree already exists?' he said at a press conference here today. Nizar, who is Najib's eldest son, said failure to carry out the order could damage public trust and respect for royal directives. 'It's the same as when we honoured the royal decree to form the unity government. No one questioned it and, in fact, everyone supported it. So what's the difference between the decree to form the unity government and the one to implement the addendum?' he said. Last week, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government will follow-up on the royal order as soon as possible following legal procedures 'but it depends heavily on the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which we must all respect'. The addendum was made to a Pardons Board decision to reduce Najib's sentence of a jail term and fine, and purportedly orders Najib's jail sentence to be served under house arrest. Najib had been convicted of corruption and abuse of power in the SRC International case. The Federal Court was told on July 9 that Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar had on July 2 acknowledged the existence of the addendum but was disputing whether it was genuine or valid. At the press conference, Rosmadi Ismail, chairman of the NKB1Msia Club, called on the prime minister to take full responsibility in ensuring the addendum is implemented. He said Najib deserved fair and just treatment under the law as a statesman who had contributed significantly to national development.

Armizan's child not at SMA Tun Datu Mustafa
Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Political Secretary to Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, Ghazali Hajiji, has refuted claims circulating on social media suggesting the minister's child is linked to the recent death of a student at SMKA Tun Datu Mustafa. In a Facebook post, Ghazali clarified, 'For the record, none of Datuk Armizan's children attend that school.' He added that a police report has been lodged against a TikTok user under the handle 'saka_merah7' for allegedly spreading false and malicious content intended to defame the minister. 'Social media must not be used to spread slander or stir assumptions that lead to dangerous falsehoods,' he said. Ghazali said it is his duty to counter the spread of misinformation, especially when the family of the late student is still grieving. 'This is a time for empathy, not political exploitation. Sabah's political scene is mature. "There's no need to stoop this low. Enough is enough. We are better than this,' he stressed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
