Commuter offers pregnant lady a train seat and is horrified by what happens next

Daily Mirror4 days ago
It's polite to offer your seat on public transport to those less able to stand and one commuter offered his train seat to a pregnant woman but it didn't go as expected
There's often a rush to get a good seat, or any seat, on a busy train, especially during peak hours. However, many follow the etiquette of giving up their seat to those who would need it more – whether that's someone who is elderly, disabled or pregnant.
Lots of public transport vehicles also have priority seats for those who fall into these categories. However, despite these policies, there are still times when things go wrong. This was clear recently – when a commuter offered his seat to a pregnant lady on a train in London and was horrified by what happened next.

The Reddit user recalled how they'd stood up for a pregnant woman got on the London Underground, only for a man to get in the way and "steal" the seat instead.

They said: 'This morning [I] was heading into London on the Jubilee line from Stanmore. After a few stops I saw a pregnant woman get on and the people in the priority seats just ignored her so I offered her mine.
'As soon as I stood up a man pushed her away and took the seat I had just vacated. It was bad enough seeing people not give up priority seats but then to see that and he just sat there obstinately as I told him it was for a pregnant woman.'
Even more shocking, the kind commuter looked up the man's workplace as he was wearing a work top. Apparently, he discovered he is employed by a company that 'makes products to help people with mobility and health issues".
The Reddit rant has garnered more than 600 comments, including from the pregnant woman the post is referring to and her husband.
She remarked: 'Firstly, to the kind man who offered your seat, thank you so much for doing the right thing and I think we were both gobsmacked by this other man's behaviour.'

The mum-to-be then gave some more information about what happened: 'To clarify the situation, I got on the tube this morning and since I am 8 months pregnant I usually ask for a seat if someone isn't offering it, since I know people can be in their own world or on their phones.
'However, this morning, I didn't have to as this kind man stood up and then this other 2 meter tall, well built man pushed in front of me to grab the seat.
'I said 'excuse me, I think this seat was meant for me' and the kind man said the same thing. He just looked us both in the eye, didn't say anything but remained seated.

'The kind man said 'I can't believe you just took a pregnant woman's seat' but nothing from him, he shortly after pretended to sleep, probably not to face the looks of the rest of the carriage.'
The woman added that luckily, she was then offered a priority seat by another commuter but she 'didn't want to kick up more of a fuss'. She worried about what the man who took the seat could do next.

She concluded her comment: 'I would have understood if he also had a disability but he had clearly been capable to stand until that point, didn't wear a badge or say anything in his defence.
'I think he was just lazy and rude. My main thought was: I wonder what his mum would have said if she saw his behaviour…'
Her husband also commented on the post and chimed in: 'So this was my wife! Thank you for noticing as not many do.

'Thanks to the other person who stood up to give her a seat. To the guy that just ignored my wife you're an a******!'
Others shared their disgust at the man's behaviour. One user said: 'That's absolutely ridiculous. I would have shamed him loudly in front of everyone.'
Another added: 'The irony of working in health support and doing that... unreal. Hope karma catches him fast.'
A third commented: 'Contact his work company and shame him. Even if they do nothing, at least you've done what you can. What a t*****.'

What Is The Viral Bali Breakup Curse?

In the last few years, the island of Bali in Indonesia has grown into a popular tourist spot. It's affordable, serene, and rich in history and culture. In 2024 alone, Bali welcomed 6.3 million international tourists - a record for the island. These tourists include not only honeymooners and families, but also solo travellers, groups of bachelors, and unmarried couples drawn to its vibrant nightlife. However, a viral video has recently sparked concern, warning unmarried couples not to visit Bali due to a mystical curse. A curse that supposedly causes couples (particularly unmarried ones) to break up soon after visiting. What Is The Viral Curse? According to a now-viral podcast clip from Jumpers Jump Replay, many unmarried couples tend to break up after visiting Bali. The hosts claim that several people have even shared their breakup stories on Reddit following trips to the island. To verify this, we did a bit of our own digging - and sure enough, Reddit threads and the comment section of the viral video are filled with people recounting eerily similar experiences. "We went to Bali for our honeymoon and divorced 6 months later," one user shared. "My bf and I broke up too when we went there. It's for the best tho. Found my hubby right after him. Maybe it's not a curse but a blessing," wrote another. "Idk how much of this is true but I also ended my 2-year relationship there," someone else added. Reddit is brimming with such anecdotes, especially linking breakups to one particular location, Tanah Lot Temple, one of the most iconic spots in Bali. Bali: The Tanah Lot Curse - What is your perspective/experience in it? by u/ocinisme in indonesia Interestingly, many have drawn parallels to Kolkata's Dakshineswar Temple, where unmarried couples are reportedly not allowed for the same reason. Some believe such restrictions are grounded in similar traditional beliefs or superstitions. About Tanah Lot Temple Perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop along Bali's southwestern coast, Tanah Lot Temple is one of the island's most sacred and picturesque landmarks. This ancient Hindu shrine, believed to have been established in the 16th century by the priest Dang Hyang Nirartha, is dedicated to the sea gods and represents a harmonious balance between nature and the divine. The temple's name translates to "Land in the Sea", a fitting description of its stunning location. Surrounded by ocean waves, it appears to float during high tide. Tanah Lot isn't just a spiritual hub for locals - it's a favourite among tourists drawn to it for its spellbinding sunsets, unique architecture, and tranquil aura. But beyond its beauty and spirituality, the temple is wrapped in a curious legend that the Internet has dubbed the "Breakup Curse". The History Of 'The Breakup Curse' At Tanah Lot Balinese folklore traces the origins of the curse to a tragic love story. A Brahmin Prince and Princess from Java once visited Tanah Lot seeking a romantic escape. During their visit, the couple became intimate, but not long after, the Prince abandoned the Princess, leaving her heartbroken and betrayed. In her sorrow and rage, the Princess is believed to have cursed the land. She declared that any unmarried couple who visited Tanah Lot would part ways within six months. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jumpers Jump Replay (@jumpersjumpreplay) Over time, this local superstition took on a life of its own. While some versions of the tale apply the curse only to couples who visit Tanah Lot specifically, others believe it extends to all unmarried couples who visit Bali together. Regardless of interpretation, the legend adds a mysterious charm to the temple - turning it into not just a sacred site, but also a magnet for those intrigued by local myths. Another Logical Reason? Of course, not everyone is convinced. While the Internet has its share of breakup stories tied to Bali, there are also plenty of couples who returned engaged or even got married during their trip. Many believe this "curse" might actually have more to do with human behaviour than anything supernatural. For many couples, a trip to Bali may be their first international vacation together. And when you're travelling, navigating new environments, and spending nearly every waking moment with each other, two things can happen: you either realise they're the one... or that they're absolutely not. So, maybe it's not really a curse - maybe it's just clarity.

Why did Kareena Kapoor Khan choose ‘OG Kolhapuri' sandals over luxury brand? Bebo's subtle statement wins hearts

Kareena Kapoor Khan recently sparked a wave of conversation online after she subtly called out a high-end fashion label for its controversial adaptation of a traditional Indian footwear style. The actress took to Instagram to share a candid snapshot featuring her feet adorned in a classic pair of Kolhapuri sandals . She proudly expressed her preference for these homegrown, handcrafted leather slippers over flashy designer versions, emphasizing her pride in native craftsmanship. In the photograph, Kareena wore a stylish variant of the Kolhapuri chappals with a shimmering metallic tint, subtly highlighting their aesthetic appeal and cultural value. Her post came shortly after a globally renowned Italian fashion house showcased footwear strikingly similar to Kolhapuris during a fashion show. The runway display immediately triggered backlash on social media, as many viewers criticized the luxury brand for not giving due credit to the artisans and the centuries-old Indian heritage behind the design. The controversy took on a more serious tone as voices from across the internet began demanding recognition for the traditional craft and the hardworking artisans who have been keeping the legacy of Kolhapuris alive for generations. The brand in question eventually acknowledged that their creation drew 'inspiration' from the iconic Indian slipper. They also committed to opening conversations with Indian craftsmen and industry stakeholders associated with the heritage, which dates back over 800 years. Internet Applauds Kareena's Support for Local Tradition Kareena's post quickly went viral and gained momentum across online platforms, especially on Reddit's Bolly Blinds Gossip community. Fans and followers praised her for standing up for Indian artisans and traditional design. Many users voiced frustration at how global brands often adopt Indian elements—whether in fashion, textiles, or patterns—without offering appropriate recognition or credit. One Redditor highlighted how this form of cultural appropriation has persisted for years, recalling how Indian Bandhani prints were previously repackaged as 'bandanas' in the West. Another user criticized the frequent pattern of Asian and particularly Indian innovations being rebranded or copied without acknowledgment, calling it a longstanding issue that continues to deny Indian creatives the recognition they deserve. A Break in London While her social media post gained traction, Kareena has been unwinding in London with her family. A video making rounds online captured the actress enjoying a relaxed outing with her husband, Saif Ali Khan, and their sons, Taimur and Jeh. The family was seen walking through the city's vibrant streets, sampling local cuisine, and soaking in the London vibe, adding a personal touch to the professional buzz Kareena stirred with her statement.

The worst thing about AI? That stupid Samsung ad where the guy adds ‘way too much sugar' to his pasta sauce

At a time of intense, bitter division, it's heartwarming when something brings us together. No, not 'briefly becoming experts in lawn tennis', or 'being too hot' – that stupid Samsung advert where the guy 'added way too much sugar to my gochujang pasta sauce' and asks his phone for help. If, by the greatest good fortune, you have managed to dodge it, Google Gemini (an AI 'assistant') suggests he makes 'tasty cookies' out of his sugary sauce. Instead of throwing his phone out of the window in holy rage, the youth seems inexplicably enthused ('Sweet!') and follows its frankly inadequate instructions – add butter, mix, bake for 10 minutes – before wandering off with a cookie, apparently happy with this bizarre outcome. It gives me a rage-powered eyelid twitch, so I was relieved to realise everyone off- and online feels the same ('Googled 'sauce advert stupid' and then made a Reddit profile just so I could find someone saying this and agree with them,' one commenter wrote). We differ only in what offends us most. Many are furious the 'advice' is so unfit for purpose, with comments such as 'It's SO ANNOYING – like what is he having for tea then????????' and 'For dinner I'm having plain spaghetti and flourless gochujang cookies', while anyone who has ever cooked anything is shouting: 'Just scoop the sugar out like a normal human!' People have noted other problems: adding butter to a bowl of sauce is not a cookie recipe, for starters. Some protested that pasta sauces typically contain onions and garlic; not ideal cookie flavours. Others pointed out the eggs, flour, cubed butter and vanilla extract handily out on the worktop – why? He's making pasta sauce! My husband is specifically offended because baking requires precision, and the hapless youth and his phone have no idea what 'way too much' is in grams. I've always avoided badmouthing AI – it seems like a simple commonsense survival tactic to keep the robots on side at this point. But when it starts disrespecting dinner and baked goods in this cavalier fashion, a line has been crossed. It's time to start a gochujang-flavoured fightback. Emma Beddington is a Guardian columnist
