Punjab sees rise in direct seeding of rice technique

Chandigarh: Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian said on Wednesday that in an advancement of the government's efforts to conserve groundwater through sustainable agricultural practices, the state saw 11.86 per cent increase in area dedicated to direct seeding of rice (DSR) compared to last year. He said paddy has been sown using water-conserving DSR technique at over 2.83 lakh acres this year, up from 2.53 lakh acres in the last year. He expressed hope that the area under DSR will rise further as paddy sowing is still going on. The minister said the government has been offering Rs 1,500 per acre to farmers adopting the DSR method. He said the financial assistance was transferred into the bank accounts of 24,032 farmers who adopted the DSR technique during the kharif season of 2024. Minister Khudian reaffirmed the government's commitment of encouraging farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices. He also congratulated the Agriculture Department officials for promoting the water-saving method. Administrative Secretary (Agriculture and Farmers Welfare) Basant Garg said that the Agriculture Department has taken various proactive steps to promote the direct seeding of rice. The department has been organising awareness campaigns and farmer training camps to provide hands-on knowledge, besides conducting field demonstrations to showcase the technique's effectiveness and sensitise farmers about the advantages of DSR. With a land area of only three per cent of the net cultivated land of the country, Punjab contributes 25-35 per cent of rice and 38-50 per cent of wheat to the central pool of food grain. The state ranks fourth in the world in terms of productivity and first in India among all the other states. In neighboring Haryana, the paddy is currently sown over 34 lakh acres in Haryana. Of this, 57 per cent of the area is under basmati, which matures two weeks later than the non-basmati type.

Erosion by Ganga ravages Bhojpur village, 50 houses lost in 7 days

1 2 3 4 5 6 Ara: People of Jawaniya village under Damodarpur panchayat in Shahpur block of Bhojpur district are spending sleepless nights as the Ganga river continues to erode land at an alarming pace, swallowing homes and temples. "About 50 houses have been lost to the river in the past seven days," said Ram Awatar Yadav, a local resident whose house was among 15 that were swept away on Tuesday. Another villager, Lagan Gond, shared his ordeal: "Even the remains of my house, which partially survived last year's flood, have been completely consumed by the river this time. I built it with much effort, and now it's gone." The erosion has also claimed a concrete water tank built by the govt in ward no. 4 of Jawaniya village. Religious sites, including Govardhan and Kali temples, and two ancient peepal and neem trees, have also been submerged. On it's part, Bhojpur district administration has given Rs 1.20 lakh each to 59 flood-affected people whose houses went under the river Ganga last year. Besides this 29 people have been given the land 'parcha' for building their new homes at safer places, said DM Tanai Sultania. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo To help the displaced, the administration has increased the number of community kitchens from one to three. These are currently operational at Jawaniya High School, Jawaniya embankment and Damodarpur village embankment, according to revenue official Nitish Kumar. Relief measures include free medical camps, potable water, milk for children, fodder for cattle, polythene sheets and transportation to safer areas. "Instructions have been issued to ensure the distribution of quality meals to affected villagers," stated a press release from the DM's office. Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Ara MP Sudama Prasad called for immediate and permanent measures. "A concrete embankment must be constructed to prevent future disasters. The root cause erosion needs a lasting solution," he said, also demanding compensation of Rs 25 lakh each for families who lost their homes in the flood.

The causes ranged from trespassing, pole hitting, falling from running trains, falling in platform gaps. Mumbai accounted for 1,408 fatalities, followed by Thane (615), Navi Mumbai (131), and Raigad (128), according to the data. 'As per information received from the Government Railway Police, 2,282 fatalities were reported on Mumbai's Suburban Railway network in 2024 due to various reasons such as trespassing, pole hitting, falling from running trains, falling in platform gap etc," the Ministry said. The Mumbra incident The issue of deaths on local trains resurfaced last month when eight passengers fell off two trains near Mumbra station, resulting in five fatalities. Tiruvallur Lok Sabha MP Sasikanth Senthil had asked the Railway Ministry about the incident. Five major accidents on Mumbai suburban network In a separate reply, the Ministry said that total five consequential train accidents of suburban trains took place in the Mumbai Suburban Network over Central Railway and Western Railway from 2020-21, all on Central Zone and none Western. 'In these accidents, no fatality or injury took place," the Ministry added. The causes of these accidents broadly include track defects, loco/coach defects, equipment failures, and human errors. 'Accident victims are paid ex-gratia relief soon after an accident or untoward incident. Total amount of ex-gratia paid by the Railways to the next of kin of deceased and injured individuals in untoward incidents in Mumbai Suburban Railway Network during the period 2020-21 to 2024-25 is Rs 34.55 Lakh," the Ministry said. Total amount of compensation paid by the Railways, over and above the ex-gratia amount, to the next of kin of deceased in untoward incidents in Mumbai Suburban Railway Network during the period 2020-21 to 2024-25 is Rs 216.87 crore. 'It may be noted that the compensation paid in a year need not necessarily relate to the accidents/casualties in that year alone. The amount paid in a year depends upon the number of cases finalised by Railway Claims Tribunals (RCTs) or other Courts of Law in a particular year irrespective of the year(s) in which the accident they pertain to, have occurred," the Ministry explained. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
