Mohali: 3 rescued during anti-child begging drive
In a coordinated effort to curb child begging in Mohali, the district administration carried out a special drive on Thursday and rescued three children involved in begging. Following immediate verification of their documents and identities, the children were handed over to their respective parents. District child protection officer Navpreet Kaur said that parents were issued strict warning, with a clear message that any repetition of such act would attract legal consequences. The administration has appealed to the public to report any instances of child begging or exploitation so that timely action can be taken to protect vulnerable children. (HT photo for representation) The drive was conducted on the directions of Punjab's social security, women and child welfare minister, Baljit Kaur, and deputy commissioner (DC) Komal Mittal. The initiative is part of the state government's ongoing campaign against child exploitation and beggary. DC Mittal reiterated the administration's commitment to safeguarding child rights. She said, 'The protection and welfare of children remains a top priority of the administration and such drives will continue to ensure children safety and development. Navpreet Kaur stated that engaging children in begging constitutes a punishable offence under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which mandates care, protection, and rehabilitation for children in need. The Act also holds individuals accountable for employing or using children for begging, prescribing penalties including imprisonment and fines. The drive was initiated by Vineet Verma, member of Punjab State Traders' Commission, who emphasised the need for sustained enforcement. 'Public spaces, especially markets, often witness this menace, which not only exploits children but also causes inconvenience to citizens,' he added. Kulwant Singh Guru, chairman of the Child Welfare Committee, pointed out those forcing minors to sell articles also fall under the definition of begging. He urged the public to refrain from giving alms or buying goods from children, as such acts encourage families to send their children onto the streets. The administration has appealed to the public to report any instances of child begging or exploitation so that timely action can be taken to protect vulnerable children.

'Pursuant to Regulation 42 of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015, the Company has fixed Monday, June 30, 2025, as the Record Date for determining entitlement of Members to final dividend for the financial year ended March 31, 2025,' the company said in an exchange filing. The said dividend will be paid to the entitled shareholders on or after July 11. What is a record date? The record date for a dividend is the cut-off date set by a company to determine which shareholders are eligible to receive the dividend. If you are listed as a shareholder in the company's books on or before the record date, you will be entitled to receive the dividend. Anyone who buys the shares after the record date will not receive the dividend. To be eligible, investors typically need to purchase the shares at least one business day before the record date, because of the T+1 settlement cycle (in India), where trades take one working day to settle. 3 minors rescued in drive to curb child begging in Mohali
Three children were rescued in a special drive to curb the menace of child begging in Mohali, officials said on Thursday. After a verification of their documents and identity, the children were handed over to their respective parents, District Child Protection Officer Navpreet Kaur said, adding that the parents were issued a strict warning that any such act in the future would invite legal consequences. District Child Protection Officer further highlighted that engaging children in begging is a punishable offence under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which provides for the care, protection, treatment, and rehabilitation of children in need. As per the Act, any individual who employs or uses a child for begging can face imprisonment and/or fine. The Act aims to create a secure environment for children and ensure their rights are upheld. Vineet Verma, member, Punjab State Traders' Commission, on whose initiative the drive was conducted, also pressed upon the need of such continuous raids as public is often harassed in the market due to this menace besides the exploitation of children. He praised the action taken by the district officials. Kulwant Singh Guru, chairman of a child welfare committee, emphasised that forcing the minors selling articles also comes under the definition of begging. He stressed upon discouraging the public to give alms to children and purchasing articles from them as this encourages the families to make their children send on roads to beg and sell articles. Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal emphasised that protection of child rights is a top priority for the administration, and such drives will continue in the future to ensure the safety and welfare of children. The district administration also appealed to the public to report any such cases immediately so that timely intervention can be ensured.

Supreme Court flags misunderstanding around mediation in matrimonial cases
Jun 26, 2025 06:40 PM IST The Supreme Court on Thursday said there was a "misunderstanding" about the concept of mediation in matrimonial case and it was often thought mediation means parties have to be together. The apex court referred to the Commercial Courts Act, 2015 which talks about pre-institution mediation and settlement. "In matrimonial matters, we find there is a misunderstanding on the concept of mediation," Justice Viswanathan said. He continued, "The moment we say mediation, they think we are asking them to be together. We are not interested whether they are together or separate. We just want a solution to the matter. We will prefer if they are together..." The apex court referred to the Commercial Courts Act, 2015 which talks about pre-institution mediation and settlement. "In Commercial Courts Act also, you have to go through this process," the bench observed.
