Glamorous lifeguard impaled by beach umbrella speaks out from hospital to relive freak accident

Daily Mail19 hours ago

After being violently impaled by an umbrella, a New Jersey lifeguard has vowed to return to the beach, despite her injuries.
The 18-year-old, Alex, who only gave her first name, spoke out about her near-death experience after being stabbed through the arm in a freak accident at Asbury Park Beach Wednesday morning.
Alex was attempting to secure an umbrella from her lifeguard chair when the wind picked up and she lost control of it. She fell down onto the aluminum pole while trying to keep it from blowing away.
The one-inch wide rod went through her armpit and out of her back, leaving Alex lying on the beach, impaled.
'So we have umbrellas on stands for hot days and we usually have ropes tied to each of them so you can tie them to the stands,' she told ABC7.
'But the rope was frayed, and it was a little too short to tie, and a gust of wind came. It wasn't particularly strong, but the wind came and picked the umbrella up and I tried to catch it as it was going off the stand, but it pulled me off of it with it and I landed on the pole.'
First responders quickly arrived on the scene, paramedics gave Alex medicine for her pain and firefighters sawed off the ends of the pole to make her injury more manageable, securing the one foot piece lodged under her arm.
Officials said Alex was 'conscious, alert, and in good spirits', as she was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey.
'I was kind of a little freaked out at first and my brain got heavy because I was like, "oh my gosh, I've been impaled,"' she said.
Alex underwent surgery and received a few stitches. She said the pole missed a crucial artery by only a centimeter but she's already home and recovering.
'I was very lucky where it hit me because it missed every major blood vessel and nerve. It just went through my muscle,' she said.
'So there wasn't any serious damage. It could've been so much worse, actually.'
First responders, fellow lifeguards, and onlookers admired her attitude through the whole incident. Her colleagues called her tiny but strong.
Asbury Park Beach Safety Supervisor Joe Bongiovanni said he was unsurprised by her positive attitude during the accident.
'She's one of those people that's always upbeat, always smiling. I've never seen her without a smile on her face.'
Alex wanted to encourage beachgoers to secure their umbrellas, especially on windy days.
Local fire Chief Kevin Keddy told ABC News, Alex was a 'tough young woman'.
'I feel like I tend to do pretty well in stressful, chaotic situations,' Alex said.
Alex hopes to return to her post in just six weeks. It's her second summer lifeguarding at Asbury Park Beach, but she's been doing it since she was 15.
'I was bummed when I found out I had to take six weeks off,' she said.
'I'm definitely planning on going back as soon as I can.'
Alex, who just finished her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin, wanted to use her story to encourage beachgoers to be conscious of their umbrellas.

Where is the 'Hot Felon' now? How Jeremy Meeks turned his life around after THAT viral mug shot as he retreats from the public eye after ruling the runways at Fashion Week

He sent the internet into meltdown when his smouldering mugshot went viral in 2014 - earning himself the nickname the ' Hot Felon '. As he awaited his trial and sentencing, Jeremy Meeks won the hearts of social media users after Stockton Police Department shared his photo online. The June 2014 jail visit that changed his life saw him and three others in a multi-agency law enforcement mission dubbed Operation Ceasefire, where he was listed as a 'convicted felon, arrested for felony weapon charges'. He denied the charges. In 2015, he was convicted of the crime of one count of being possession of a firearm, and was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison and ordered to participate in the 500-Hour Bureau of Prisons Substance Abuse Treatment Program. However, the sudden fame that came following the viral mugshot changed Jeremy's life, as he went on to secure a modelling contract and star in multiple films after his release from Mendota Federal Correctional Institution. In June 2017 he was revealed to be dating Chloe Green, daughter of billionaire businessman Philip. They welcomed a son together, Jayden, the following year. Yet after a brief period in the spotlight Jeremy has retreated from the public eye again, so, where is he now? Jeremy currently works with charities, helping with underprivileged youths to avoid gang crime and prevent going down the wrong paths. He also helps incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals turn their lives around. In an update to Instagram last month, he shared an insight into his work and wrote: 'God is so Good……. With projects like this it makes me feel like I'm actually walking in my Purpose !!! 'We had the most incredible conversation yesterday about an upcoming project to potentially changes lives for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals. Thank you.' In another photo from a church inside California Youth Authority, he wrote: 'God is doing the most incredible things in my life right now, thank you Jesus. 'This picture was taken at the California Youth Authority juvenile prison when I was speaking to a group of kids ages 17-23. 'And every time I go up there and I talk to a group of kids. It reminds me how much I wish I had someone who looked like US… To come talk to US, but I'm very grateful for ALL the trail and tribulations, I'm thankful for the people he's put in my life. I can feel a polar shift coming. Stay Prayed up EVERYONE.' He previously said: 'I mean they definitely need education and proper father figures, and people to look up to. It's a serious issue, especially in my neighborhood with gun violence at a young age, and so that's the situation... 'It's something that really holds dear to my heart, because it affects me on a weekly basis…Someone I know has been killed and shot… it's really rapid'. In an update, he wrote: 'This picture was taken at the California Youth Authority juvenile prison when I was speaking to a group of kids ages 17-23' On the charity work, Jeremy added: 'We've been doing a lot of stuff right now with the kids. Recently I've been working with a charity called WOSMOH (Women of Substance Men of Honor) and visiting many group homes... 'Going to the juvenile halls, and talking to the kids, and just telling my life story, letting them know that I've been exactly where you are. So I'm going to start getting involved a lot more with kids, because as cliché as it sounds, they are the future.' He also moved from the penitentiary to the pen by writing his own memoir, Model Citizen, which was released in March this year. Speaking about the book, Jeremy said: 'I'm in a place in my life where I am extremely vulnerable and want to tell my story, the whole story and hope that people can connect to it and understand how I came to be in the place that I'm at in my life'. The synopsis for his book reads: 'In his harrowing autobiography, Jeremy tells his personal story about his battles with gang violence, poverty, race and the inevitable life-changing moments that turned his world around'. The book also includes 46 photos, featuring 24 full-page color modeling photos by celebrity photographer Jim Jordan. While he has slowed down his modelling career, following his release from prison he signed to White Cross Management company and kickstarted his career in the fashion industry. He told BuzzFeed in 2020: 'If anyone would've told me 10 years ago that I was gonna be traveling the world, walking fashion shows, acting in movies? I don't know what I would've done.' Jeremy has also designed his own lines working with Fashion Concept GmbH in 2020 and releasing a line with Canon Mitchell in January 2024. Aside from fashion he has starred in multiple films, he last featured in Dutch II: Angel's Revenge in 2024 and will next be seen in Beach Chain, Doggmen and Rise of the Tarrogan - the release dates are yet to be confirmed. Jeremy is also kept busy with his role as a father. He shares Jeremy Junior with his ex wife Melissa, who he was married to from 2008 until 2018. His second son Jayden born of his shock relationship with Topshop boss Philip Green's daughter Chloe. Jeremy and Chloe's relationship first came to public attention after they were seen kissing aboard a boat in June 2017, while he was still legally married to his first wife Melissa Meeks, with whom he shares one child, Jeremy Jr. The pair managed to keep Chloe's pregnancy secret until the final month. She gave birth to Jayden Meeks-Green on May 29, 2018. The Topshop heiress sparked rumours that she was engaged after sporting a massive diamond ring, but neither she nor Meeks confirmed the engagement. They ultimately called it quits in August 2019, but remain amicable co-parents to their little boy, in addition to his great relationship to Melissa. In 2020, he said: 'I am single. I'm trying to focus on myself. I have an incredible relationship with Chloe, the mother of my 2-year-old... 'And now I have a relationship with the mother of my oldest son. They're in good places. I'm in a good place. We're all co-parenting. They are incredible mothers.'

Horrendous moment 'deplorable' electric unicycle rider leaves girl, two, with fractured skull after being caught on CCTV weaving in and out of pedestrians

This is the shocking moment a careless electric unicycle rider left a two-year-old girl with a fractured skull and a serious brain injury after colliding with her on Felixstowe Promenade in Suffolk. CCTV footage shows Andrew Wickenden, 50, from Ipswich, riding on a single-wheeled electric scooter on Sunday, November 3, as he weaves in and out of pedestrians. The video then shows him zooming down the promenade as he nears a group of people walking in the opposite direction as him. The clip cuts out momentarily, which was when he collided with the toddler. The video then shows the vehicle strewn across the floor, while a man is seen confronting Mr Wickenden. The two-year-old is shown being held in her mother's arms. She sustained a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain and had to be rushed to hospital by ambulance. The man was given a suspended sentence and a driving ban after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving at Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Friday. But in a statement, the defendant said he was travelling at a speed 'less than cyclists' and close to a wall to 'minimise potential contact with others'. 'I am devastated and I've had sleepless nights' Mr Wickenden added in his statement. The court heard how Mr Wickenden had been riding a Bedgoden unicycle, which can only be used on private land. The victim's mother told the court that the incident left her daughter 'covered in her own sick' and 'head to toe in bruises and scrapes.' 'Seeing my daughter in a situation that I couldn't prevent was heartbreaking. Hearing the diagnosis of a fractured skull and brain bleed and knowing there was absolutely nothing I could do to repair', she added. The court heard the toddler recovered from her injuries, but her mother, who has not been named to protect the young girl's identity, told the court of the anxiety and distress she was left with after the incident. 'I couldn't sleep without her being close to me, I endured nightmares.' 'As a parent the last thing you ever want is to hear your child is in pain and suffering, especially from something so careless and preventable'. 'The emotional distress we have gone through as a family in such a small amount of time is awful. A feeling me, and my children, will never forget.' The court also heard that the child recovered from her injuries, but there were concerns about her long-term development. 'She is currently still undergoing a range of tests such as eye and hearing tests to ensure nothing has been damaged. The daily worry of what could happen as she grows is frightening, the unknown of how much this has truly affected her', her mother told the court. Mr Wickenden will spend 14 weeks behind bars and was also disqualified from driving for 18 months. He was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work. Acting Inspector Matt Dale, the senior investigating officer for the incident, said in a statement: 'This was an unusual incident where a child had suffered serious injuries as a result of a lack of due care from the defendant, riding a vehicle that is not legal on our roads or public spaces. 'This matter was easily preventable and could have had resulted in a fatal outcome. This should be a lesson to any person who possesses an e-scooter, electric unicycle or similar vehicle to ensure they know the law in relation to their use and to ride them legally in suitable private spaces with due care.'
