Lottery player doesn't believe email about big MD win. Then he gets a letter
Junior Egbufoama of Severn ignored the congratulatory message about a prize for the Monopoly second-chance drawing, Maryland Lottery officials said in a July 18 news release.
But then came a letter from Maryland Lottery, which included 'his name handwritten on the envelope,' lottery officials said.
His skepticism started to subside, and he began 'to think maybe he really had won,' lottery officials said.
'I told my wife, 'Let me check it out and call,'' Egbufoama told lottery officials.
Sure enough, lottery officials said they confirmed Egbufoama had won $104,768, leaving him 'all smiles.'
Egbufoama recently left his job with the Veterans Administration but credits his time there for the big win, lottery officials said.
While he was working there, he said, 'a veteran saw him throwing away non-winning tickets.'
'A veteran told me to scan in those tickets,' Egbufoama told lottery officials.
The veteran introduced him to My Lottery Rewards, where he ultimately entered his non-winning Monopoly ticket for a second-chance drawing.
'It still hasn't hit me yet,' Egbufoama said of his big win.
He told lottery officials he plans to use his windfall toward his children's college education.
Severn is about a 15-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Lottery player worried about retirement — then won big. ‘Happiness flooded in'
An office worker was worried about her approaching retirement — and then she won $50,000 in the lottery. Now, 'I'm feeling much better about things,' she told Maryland Lottery officials, according to a July 23 news release. The woman, from Queen Anne's County, bought her winning Pick 5 ticket for the July 18 midday drawing at a gas station in Gaithersburg, lottery officials said. She usually goes for scratch-off tickets, and she did grab a couple of those. But, 'every once in a while, I try something different,' she told lottery officials, so she threw the Pick 5 in as well. When she learned she'd won, 'I refused to believe it,' she said, per the release. 'I knew what I was seeing. I knew what my Lottery app was telling me. I just wouldn't let myself accept that it had happened.' But, eventually, 'the happiness flooded in,' she told lottery officials. Gaithersburg is about a 45-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Lottery player thought he won $100K, then kept scratching ticket. ‘Speechless'
A visit to Maryland turned into a $1 million payday for a New York native, lottery officials said. The merchant marine's 'latest assignment brought him to the Port of Baltimore,' and he bought five scratch-off tickets at a convenience store, Maryland Lottery officials said in a July 22 news release. The Lucky 777 tickets were $20 each. The commercial sailor scratched the tickets enough to reveal the QR codes, and then had the clerk scan them, lottery officials said. The clerk 'told me I won $100,000,' he said, per the release. 'I was satisfied with that and left.' But, later, his fellow merchant marines 'encouraged him to scratch the full play area,' lottery officials said. Then, 'the real shock came,' lottery officials said, as he realized he'd actually won $1 million. 'I couldn't believe it,' the man told lottery officials. 'I was floored. For the first time in my life, I was speechless.' When it comes to the winnings, the man said he wants 'to be smart with it and save as much as I can for retirement.'

The Brooklyn native told Maryland Lottery officials his latest assignment brought him to the Port of Baltimore, and he stopped at the 7-Eleven on Key Highway in Baltimore one day after finishing work early. The man bought five $20 Lucky 777 scratch-offs and asked the store clerk to scan them. "They told me I won $100,000," he said. "I was satisfied with that and left." The player said it was only when he told his crew of his good luck that they encouraged him to finish scratching the ticket, unveiling another surprise. "I couldn't believe it," he said. "I was floored. For the first time in my life, I was speechless. Turns out the ticket was worth $1 million." The winner said he plans to be conservative with his winnings. "I plan to keep working.
