
Royal kitchen upholds 186-yr-old tradition of Tabarruk in Lucknow
Operated by the Hussainabad Trust, the Chhota Imambara Bawarchikhana prepares these offerings which are sent to various imambaras, mausoleums, and karbalas across the City of Nawabs to be distributed among those attending the majlis.
Muharram, the first and one of the most sacred months of the Islamic calendar, marks the beginning of the Hijri New Year. As per tradition, the exact date of Muharram is determined based on the sighting of the moon.
Moreover, tabarruk is also delivered to 325 Nawabi-e-Awadh (royal) families, while upholding a tradition of 186 years. Interestingly, the offerings are cooked in desi ghee over a wood fire and served in earthen vessels. A budget of Rs 47 lakh has been allocated for the entire arrangement.
According to Nawab Masood Abdullah, a descendant of Nawab-e-Awadh Tajdar Mohammad Ali Shah, his ancestors started this royal kitchen in 1839. Their tradition has been continuing for 186 years.
As per the menu of tabarruk, for five days, fried potato curry (gravy dish), bakharkhani (sweet red bread) and khamiri roti are distributed among the devotees attending majlis to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain.
For the remaining four days, chana dal, khamiri roti and bakharkhani are distributed. The menu of the traditional Tabarruk happens to be completely vegetarian.

Loni river's revival gains momentum
Prayagraj: The state govt's initiative to revive lost rivers has brought new hope to the Loni River, a vital water source for 14 gram panchayats in the Shankargarh block. Efforts are underway to restore and revive this lifeline river, benefiting local communities. Rs 1.50 crore will be spent on the project. Chief development officer Harshika Singh stated that the district is identifying and reviving endangered rivers as per govt directives. She highlighted that a strategy has been drafted to revive the Loni River, which is called the lifeline of Shankargarh, with restoration work already launched in Gram Panchayat Gadha Katra. The state govt's efforts have revived two rivers in the Sangam City, namely the Lapri River and the Karnavati River. The Lapri River, which originates from Koraon and flows through over 12 gram panchayats covering an area of about 18 km before merging into the Belan River, is now flowing smoothly. Similarly, the Karnavati River, which flows through more than 15 gram panchayats in Manda over a distance of about 19 km, has also been rejuvenated and is now flowing on its course. For both the rivers, 44,539 working days were generated with a budget of 102.44 lakhs under MNREGA. Besides, over 40,000 trees were planted on both sides of the river. After two years of hard work, the entire route of the river was filled with water.

Veggie prices boil over to burn hole in pockets at onset of rains
Bhopal: Vegetable prices started rising in the city with the onset of the monsoon, and in no time, the prices of green vegetables went through the roof. Cauliflower (gobhi) and sponge gourd (gilki) are selling for Rs 120 per kg. Bottle gourd (lauki) and cabbage (band gobhi) are selling for Rs 80 per kg. Tomatoes, which sold for Rs 10 to Rs 20 per kg throughout the winter and summer, are now selling for Rs 60 per kg. Potatoes and onions are the only commodities being sold by the vegetable vendors for a steady Rs 30 per kg, with the modest pumpkin (kaddu) also selling for Rs 30 per kg. "Vegetable prices tend to go up during the rainy season, alright, but this year, it happened too soon. Only a fortnight ago, I went to Bittan weekly vegetable market, and everything was so cheap. A whole stack of brinjal for Rs 10, tomatoes Rs 20 to Rs 40 per kg, and hardly any vegetable except for exotic ones like beans and broccoli selling for over Rs 40 per kg. But when I went to a vegetable shop on Saturday, it was not a weekly haat, though, nothing was selling for less than Rs 60 per kg. Karela and gilki selling for Rs 120 per kg surprised me a bit," said Prerna Sharma, a school teacher. "I don't know how far it's possible for people, but I would suggest it's the time of the year when it's better to buy fruits rather than vegetables. You have a variety of mangoes, bananas, oranges, black plum (jamun), and some more, and they are not very costly either, except for lichee and, of course, pomegranate and apples, which are still costlier than vegetables," said Pankaj Dubey, a govt employee with a smile. Rakesh Chaurasia, a vegetable vendor, when asked why the prices of vegetables have risen so quickly, said, "There was a decline in the supply of vegetables. When prices of vegetables go up in the wholesale market, they obviously shoot up in the retail market also." President of Bittan Market Sabji Vyapari Mahasangh, Hariom Khatik, said, "Prices of vegetables usually go up during the rainy season, but if kaddu starts selling for Rs 20 per kg in the wholesale market, we can safely say that prices of vegetables have really shot up. The amount of rain in the areas from where vegetables are brought to Bhopal is a major factor in deciding their prices. During the rainy season, vegetables are not produced in areas close to Bhopal, so the local arrival of vegetables declines a great deal. Now, we are having supplies from Maharashtra, Ratlam, and Mandsaur side in Malwa and Maiher, and no doubt, the prices of all the vegetables are high."

Authorities design project to desilt and renovate drains along MG Road
Kochi: District administration and Kochi corporation have designed a project to desilt and renovate drains, along with other measures, under Operation Breakthrough to avoid waterlogging on MG Road. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In the first phase, Rs 10 crore will be utilized for the project and more funds will be released by PWD at a later stage. A decision was made at a meeting convened by mayor M Anilkumar on Sunday. It was decided to begin construction works on MG Road at the earliest. Besides renovation of drains and desilting, other works to prevent waterlogging will also be implemented with an expenditure of Rs 10 crore as part of the operation. "Funds will be used for works starting from Madhava Pharmacy Junction on MG Road. It is expected that additional funds will be allocated in Phase II, depending on approval from PWD," mayor said. Reports related to replacement of broken slabs on MG Road were submitted by PWD at the meeting. Additional funds will be used for renovation of footpaths and other facilities. Instructions have been given to expedite works being carried out in four reaches of Thevara-Perandoor Canal by irrigation department. Officials informed the meeting that all pump sets of fire and rescue services are operational. Meeting noted that activities to contain waterlogging in Kammattipadam area were successfully completed. Irrigation department officials made a detailed presentation on the works on Mullassery Canal during the meeting. Corporation health standing committee chairman and officials, including health officer, were congratulated at the meeting for setting up a task force using corporation health department staff. They effectively intervened to take immediate steps to contain waterlogging in the city during heavy rains.
