Hans India03-06-2025
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has asserted that Telangana will be playing a pivotal role in the nation's economic growth, considering that the state is now in a mission mode to become a $ 3 trillion economy by 2047.
As part of the Telangana Formation Day celebrations on Monday, Revanth Reddy hoisted the tricolour at the Parade Grounds, after paying tributes to Telangana martyrs. Addressing the gathering later, he reiteratad Telangana Raising – 2047 action plan and said that the State government was not only promoting the State as one that would become a $1 trillion economy over the next 10 years, but also as one that would become a $3 trillion economy by 2047.
'Telangana Raising is regarded as the main instrument to achieve robust growth. The government has formulated plans to develop Telangana as the number one developed state in the country as well as in the entire world,' he said, while exhorting everyone's contribution to him in delivering transparent administration and ensuring comprehensive development of the state.
The Chief Minister recalled how Telanganites had struggled for decades to achieve statehood for the larger purpose of attaining emancipation, freedom, and equal opportunities. However, their aspirations remained unfulfilled despite the lapse of 10 years after the formation of Telangana state. 'Vexed Telangana people dethroned the dictatorial rule and gave a big mandate to the progressive People's government,' he said in a veiled reference to the previous BRS regime.
Revanth Reddy underscored the role of women and said that the state government already unveiled plans to make one crore women as millionaires and introduced the Indira Mahila Shakti scheme for the economic empowerment of the women community. AI City, Pharma City, Sports City, Life Sciences and Health City were also being developed, he added. The Future City Development Authority had been constituted to take up such big projects.
On housing to the poor, the Chief Minister outlined the government's initiatives and said that the government was extending the Rs 5 lakh scheme benefit to beneficiaries under the Indiramma Housing scheme. 'The government is heading fast to construct 4.50 lakh Indiramma Houses with an outlay of Rs 22,500 crore. Rs one lakh scheme benefit had been disbursed to beneficiaries based on the status of the house construction. Rs 53.64 crore had been deposited in 5,364 beneficiaries' bank accounts until May 20 this year,' he mentioned.
Revanth Reddy said that the government was moving fast to promote the youngest state of Telangana as the best destination for global investments. 'We have achieved a remarkable milestone in attracting investments from global giant companies during my Davos, Singapore and Japan visits. State government inked agreements with various companies for more than Rs 3 lakh crore investments. IT giants like Google, Microsoft, Cognizant and HCL are already expanding their operations in Hyderabad. This could be the first stepping stone under the Telangana Raising,' he added.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister presented cash awards of Rs 1 crore each to nine eminent personalities for their contributions to the Telangana movement. Collective effort of Centre, RBI brings PSB NPAs down to 2.58 pc: Economist

New Delhi: The significant reduction in gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of India's public sector banks (PSBs) is a result of combined efforts of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the union government, a leading economist said on Wednesday. Economist Pankaj Jaiswal told IANS that the improvement in NPAs had been made possible due to the joint initiative of the RBI and the Centre. According to him, the two were complementary to one another and collaborated closely to achieve the same objective. Jaiswal noted that gross non-performing assets (NPAs) had decreased to 2.58 per cent in 2025, citing a statement by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary. He called this a significant accomplishment for the central government. He discussed the role of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) and said that 10 years ago, there was a widespread culture of evergreening, many industrial sector accounts were under stress, and NPAs were much higher. He pointed out that the NDA government, which implemented the IBC to address stressed assets, stopped this practice. He went on to say that the resolution framework assisted in clearing management of persistent defaulters and promoters. Jaiswal noted that the government's strategy for dealing with non-performing assets (NPAs) was clear and targeted. He added that the RBI's introduction of the Asset Quality Review (AQR) was crucial in keeping loans from being classified as non-performing assets (NPAs). He told IANS that the central bank also made sure that stressed assets were monitored at the branch level, which greatly aided in the reduction of non-performing assets. He further added that the process of loan disbursement had undergone a major transformation. Banks now review a borrower's credit history and assess repayment capacity before approving loans, which, according to him, had strengthened both disbursal and monitoring systems, the economist said. The total amount locked up in the gross NPAs of public sector banks has declined from Rs 6,16,616 crore in March 2021 to Rs 2,83,650 crore in March 2025.

Paika Rebellion & why its 'omission' in NCERT books has triggered political slugfest in Odisha

Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday (July 22) expressed concern over the 'omission' of the Paika Rebellion from the latest Class VIII history textbook of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), calling it a 'huge dishonour' to the brave Paikas. Who were the Paikas? Why did they rebel against the British? And how is the alleged omission of the rebellion from history textbooks a politically sensitive issue in Odisha? Throughout the 19th century, rural India was alive with discontent that periodically manifested itself in the form of armed resistance against old inequities and new hardships alike. The latter was primarily the result of military expansion of the British East India Company, which disrupted existing social relations in peasant and tribal communities. The Paika Rebellion, also known as the Paika Bidroha, was one such uprising. The Paikas (pronounced 'paiko', literally 'foot soldiers') were a class of military retainers who had been recruited from various social groups by the Gajapati rulers of Odisha since the 16th century. They would render martial services to the king in return for hereditary rent-free land (nish-kar jagirs) which they would cultivate during peacetime. In 1803, Colonel Harcourt marched virtually unchallenged from Madras to Puri, and faced only feeble Maratha opposition onward to Cuttack. Harcourt had made an agreement with Mukunda Deva II, for free passage through Khurda in return for compensation of Rs 1 lakh and four parganas — Lembai, Rahanga, Surai and Chabiskud — which had been under Maratha control since 1760. When the Company did not fulfil these conditions, Jayee Rajguru, the custodian of the king marched to Cuttack with around 2,000 armed Paikas in order to pressurise the British. Although Harcourt paid a sum of Rs 40,000, he refused to give Khurda the four parganas. Rajguru subsequently conspired to overthrow the British, but was caught before the revolt could materialise. The Company subsequently took away the king's lands, dethroned him, razed the fort at Barunei, and arrested Rajguru, who was convicted for waging war against the British government and executed on December 6, 1806. The king was banished to Puri. The end of native rule in Odisha marked the beginning of the decline of the Paikas' power and prestige. Apart from losing political patronage, the Paikas, who previously enjoyed rent-free land, suffered due to new land revenue settlements introduced by the Company which drove Odia proprietors to ruin. Many were forced to transfer land to Bengali absentee landlords, often for a pittance. The British also changed the currency system, demanding revenue payments in rupees, which increased pressure on dispossessed, marginal tribals. These sections had to cope with greater demands from landlords, who now had to pay taxes in silver. The British control over salt — which had pre-1803-4 origins, but was extended to coastal Odisha in 1814 — also led to rising hardship for the people in the hills. There is evidence of raids on boats of salt agents near Puri during this period. Their hereditary rent-free land being taken away, along with a host of other economic difficulties, eventually led to a full-scale revolt against British rule. The rebellion In March 1817, some 400 Kondhs equipped with traditional arms marched from Ghumusar towards Khurda. They were joined by an army of Paikas led by Bakshi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar Mahapatra Bhramarabar Ray, the former commander-in-chief of the king of Khurda and the erstwhile holder of the lucrative Rodanga estate. The rebels attacked the police station of Banpur, burnt government quarters, killed policemen, looted the government treasury, and proceeded towards Khurda. The Paikas fought bloody battles at several places over the next few months, and killed several British officials. The Company army gradually crushed the revolt. Bakshi Jagabandhu escaped to the jungles, and remained on the run till 1825, when he finally surrendered to the British under negotiated terms. Invoking Paikas today The Paikas and their rebellion have long been used to invoke Odia sub-nationalism. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government in Odisha in 2017, the 200th anniversary of the rebellion, demanded that the Centre declare the Paika Bidroha as the 'first war of independence', given it was launched four decades before the Mutiny of 1857. While this demand was not accepted, then Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha in 2021, said that rebellion would be included in Class VIII history textbooks, framing it as 'one of the beginnings of popular uprisings against the British in India'. In fact, the BJP too has the Paika Rebellion to strengthen its position in coastal Odisha. In 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi felicitated more than 200 descendants of Paika warriors in Bhubaneswar. In 2019, then President Ram Nath Kovind laid the foundation stone of the Paika Memorial at Barunei foothills. After BJP came to power in Odisha last year, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that the Paika Academy and Paika Memorial would be established expeditiously at Barunei near Khurda. Amid the latest controversy, BJP ministers in Odisha have accused Patnaik of misleading people by making false claims. The NCERT has already clarified that 'regional resistances' like the Paika Rebellion will be handled in the second volume of the textbook, expected to be released in September-October.

IOA Conflict Nears Resolution As EC Members Prepare To Ratify CEO Appointment

Last Updated: The Indian Olympic Association's power struggle nears resolution as EC members plan to ratify Raghuram Iyer's CEO appointment, ending discord with President PT Usha. A long-standing power struggle within the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) appears to be approaching resolution. The majority of Executive Council (EC) members—who have been at odds with IOA President PT Usha—are expected to ratify the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as CEO, a move that could signal the end of months of internal discord. The conflict stems from Usha's January 2024 appointment of Iyer as CEO, which faced resistance from EC members due to the Rs 20 lakh per month salary proposed for the position, along with additional perks. The EC refused to endorse the appointment, leading to a stalemate that stalled IOA operations. Despite a stormy Executive Council meeting in September 2024, attended virtually by a representative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), no breakthrough was achieved at the time. According to a source familiar with the situation, the sports ministry has played a key role in facilitating a resolution. 'The EC members have agreed to ratify Iyer's appointment and it's likely to be announced on Thursday," the source told PTI. In preparation, the EC members plan to hold an informal meeting on Wednesday evening, followed by a joint press conference on Thursday, where both Usha and most EC members are expected to appear. A Rapprochement in the Works An EC member emphasized the need for a functional relationship moving forward: 'There will have to be at least a working relationship [between Usha and the EC members], so a rapprochement process has started," the member said. 'We are doing it for the good of Indian sport, especially in view of the fact that we are hoping to host the 2036 Olympics." Administrative Paralysis and IOC Pressure The internal conflict has severely hampered the IOA's operations. There has been no Executive Council meeting since September 2024 and no Annual General Body Meeting since March 2023. Following PT Usha's election as IOA president, the association delayed the appointment of a CEO, a position mandated by its constitution. The delay prompted repeated warnings from the IOC, eventually leading to Iyer's appointment. However, 12 EC members refused to ratify the decision, leading to a prolonged deadlock. Usha had previously stated that Iyer had been working without pay, as his appointment remained unratified. (with PTI inputs) view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
