Galaxy desperate for points entering visit from Whitecaps
The defending MLS champion Galaxy have won just 5 percent of their matches this season entering Friday's clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps in Carson, Calif.
MLS-worst Los Angeles has earned points in three of its last four matches the Galaxy tied the San Jose Earthquakes 1-1 at Stanford Stadium last Saturday but the hole is particularly deep.
"I think we have to look at every game as of the utmost importance," Galaxy coach Greg Vanney told reporters. "I look at the last eight games, since the New York game , five of those were on the road. I feel like we squandered nine points in those games.
"I think we should have taken 15 because we were either in leading positions in the last minutes of the game or in the event of the other night," he continued, "we had eight big chances that we don't take and I feel like we've got to figure out as a group and understand, as a group, to take the points that we deserve on the night."
Los Angeles fell behind early against San Jose before Marco Reus scored the equalizer in the 70th minute. Reus has four goals and is tied for the team lead with Christian Ramirez.
The Galaxy look to avenge a 2-1 loss at Vancouver on March 2. Whitecaps star Brian White scored the winner in the 87th minute of that match. White has a team-high 10 goals.
Vancouver resides in second place in the West after losing consecutive games to the Columbus Crew and San Diego FC last month.
Vancouver continues to play without star Ryan Gauld due to a knee injury. Gauld scored 30 goals over the past three MLS seasons. He had one in three matches this season but last played on March 8.
Progress has been extremely slow but Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen maintains hope the midfielder will return later this season.
"I will not expect him to be out for the season," Sorensen told reporters. "We hope that he'll be back sooner than later, but we've said that many times. I can't say anything really decisive about it."
This is the Whitecaps' second game in Los Angeles in six days. Vancouver beat LAFC 1-0 last Sunday. Emmanuel Sabbi scored the goal in the 20th minute.

Will Lionel Messi stay at Inter Miami next season?
In summer 2024, Lionel Messi emphasised that Inter Miami would be the last club he played with in his illustrious career. Now, with his contract set to expire at the end of the MLS season, the Herons are looking to extend Messi's run on the pitch. ESPN reported Friday that Messi and Inter Miami remain in negotiations to extend the contract of the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner beyond 2025. Messi signed with Miami in July 2023 on a two-and-a-half-year Designated Player contract. With the club set to open a new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, for the 2026 season, Inter Miami wants Messi to take part in the housewarming party. Jorge Mas, co-owner of Inter Miami, told ESPN in June that his club would do whatever it takes to keep Messi with the Herons. 'I previously said that my wish, my dream, would be for the No. 10 to inaugurate our new stadium in March. This is a decision that rests on Messi,' Mas said. He added, 'I always said that he is a competitive animal; he wants to win. I hope we can raise many trophies together here at Inter Miami in the coming years. Here, we're just waiting to be able to give the fans the good news about Lionel Messi.' Since joining the club, Messi led Inter Miami to its first-ever trophies, including the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters' Shield, while setting a record for most points in a single season. Miami also advanced to the round of 16 of the current FIFA Club World Cup, after taking second in Group A, but fell to Paris Saint-Germain in the knockout stage. In 38 regular-season MLS games, Messi has 31 goals and 22 assists. He also claimed the 2024 league MVP.

Dodgers win sixth straight series, extend Royals' misery
(Photo credit: Peter Aiken-Imagn Images) Justin Wrobleski threw six shutout innings in a bulk role out of the bullpen, while Enrique Hernandez and Will Smith each homered as the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Sunday. After opener Lou Trivino allowed a run on the first two Kansas City batters of the game, Wrobleski (4-2) came on in the second inning and yielded three hits with a walk and struck out six until Kirby Yates took over in the eighth. Hernandez's two-run homer in the second put the Dodgers ahead for good and paved the way for a sixth consecutive winning series. After pounding out 14 hits during Saturday's 9-5 win that snapped their 11-game home losing streak, the Royals wasted no time staying hot at the plate. Jonathan India opened the bottom of the first with a single off Trivino, then went to second on a wild pitch. Shortly after, Bobby Witt Jr. doubled off the left field wall for a 1-0 Kansas City lead. However, that was all the offense the Royals could muster while totaling just five hits and striking out 10 times against four Dodgers pitchers Sunday. Kris Bubic (6-6) allowed two runs, two walks and three hits and fanned five while laboring through 90 pitches over five innings for Kansas City, which has dropped seven of the last eight overall and went 1-12 at home in the month of June. The Dodgers made Bubic work early on, as he threw 56 pitches through the first two innings. In the second, Andy Pages (two hits) singled and eventually scored on Hernandez's homer over the left-center-field wall that put Los Angeles ahead 2-1. The visitors added another run when Smith barely cleared the center field wall against Steven Cruz in the sixth. Los Angeles plated two more in the seventh via an RBI double from Max Muncy and Miguel Rojas' run-scoring single. Los Angeles has won 12 of the last 15. The start of this contest was delayed a little more than an hour due to rain. --Field Level Media
