Aaron Boone's defense of Anthony Volpe's shortstop play hasn't wavered, even as the errors — all 13 of them, tied for the second most in the majors entering Monday — stacked together.
He remained adamant that Volpe is still a 'top shortstop' in a postgame news conference last week, a night when another Volpe error cost the Yankees against the Blue Jays. He ripped the 'over the top' criticism that the 24-year-old faced in a 'Talkin' Yanks' podcast last week, an episode which also featured his 'I-don't-care-what-you-want' rant when his team's effort was questioned.

And while Boone's support — many times teetering between rational and delusional — 'means the world to Volpe,' he told The Post that 'I wish he didn't ever have to need to have my back.'
He has tried to have a 'healthy frustration' regarding what has gone wrong in the field. To keep working toward fixing it. To creating a scenario where, for the first time this season, Volpe's performances both at the plate and in the field consistently mirror what the Yankees envisioned.

Coach Javier Mendez: Islam Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria 'the No. 1 fight to make' in UFC

The building blocks for a potential super fight between Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria are being put in place. There's no doubt a clash between the two current pound-for-pound bests would be big for the sport, but how big exactly? Makhachev's long-time coach, Javier Mendez, thinks a championship bout between Makhachev and Topuria is the biggest fight the UFC could make today. This wasn't the case a few months ago, as Mendez told MMA Junkie last year that Topuria had ways to go to be at the level of his student. However, since those comments, Topuria defended the UFC featherweight title, by becoming the first to knockout Max Holloway, and then moved up to lightweight to knock out Charles Oliveira and claim the belt, which was vacated by Makhachev himself. "I think every fan wants to watch this fight," Mendez told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. "It's the No. 1 fight, No. 1. The other one was Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall – that was No. 1. But right now, if Islam wins, the No. 1 fight to make is Topuria vs. Islam." Makhachev vacated his UFC lightweight title earlier this year, and is expected to challenge UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena in the coming months. No official date or location has been announced by the UFC. Should Makhachev become a two-division UFC champion, just like Topuria did in June, Mendez would love to see a clash between the two – whether it's at 155 or 170 pounds. "La Leyenda" has been very vocal about wanting to fight Makhachev and has chased him for some time now. He's also made some bold claims, saying he could submit Makhachev, who's one of the most dominant grappler's MMA has ever seen. Some would be bothered by Topuria's comments, but Mendez very much likes what's going on. "I like what he's been doing," Mendez said. "He's doing a good job at getting people to want to watch the fight. The more Ilia does, the more people want to see this fight. I like everything he's doing as a fighter. He's very strong and doesn't care about the weight. I think now it's a great fight for us. The first thing Islam wanted was a legacy fight – he wanted the welterweight title. Now if we win the welterweight title, we can go down or he can come up. That's what I say, but if the UFC doesn't like it, it's not happening. But first we need to win." Former Tennessee player who never earned a key role for the Vols named as one of the biggest freak athletes in college football

Former Tennessee player who never earned a key role for the Vols named as one of the biggest freak athletes in college football originally appeared on A to Z Sports. A former Tennessee Vols player who left the program earlier this offseason after two quiet seasons on Rocky Top was named this week by The Athletic's Bruce Feldman as one of the biggest freak athletes in college football. Feldman ranked former Vols running back Cam Seldon at No. 70 on his annual "college football freaks list". Seldon, a former four-star recruit who was rated as the No. 77 overall player in the nation, transferred to Virginia Tech earlier this rushed for 224 yards and a touchdown during his two seasons at Tennessee. The Virginia native is expected to see a significant amount of time at wide receiver for the Hokies -- potentially in a Deebo Samuel-type role. 'I've been pleasantly surprised,' said Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry this spring when asked about Seldon. 'He catches the ball more naturally than I anticipated. He's got really good speed. He's got a great build. He's got really good work ethic. To this point, with four practices in the winter program, he's everything that I hoped he'd be.' 'I think he's got the ability to do that (a Deebo Samuel role),' added Pry. 'Are we able to do that with our offense and with the personnel we have? We'll see. But based on his running back background, he's good with the ball in his hands after the catch.' Feldman also included Tennessee junior linebacker Arion Carter on his freaks list. Carter landed at No. 12 on Feldman's list. This story was originally reported by A to Z Sports on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

The Hockey Maven Picks His Five Favorite Rangers

Anybody can like a star; it's the easiest thing in the world. But only a special few can root hard for the lesser lights. The Maven happens to be one of them. So, here's the summertime edition of "My Five Favorite Rangers." By the way, no agreement on your part is necessary. After all, we can agree to disagree, can't we? (Please say yes, or I might just might shed a tear.) 1. WILL CUYLLE: I especially like guys who come out of nowhere and suddenly emerge as useful characters. This 23-year-old, 6-3, 210 pounder out of Toronto is more than useful. He hits; hits some more, scores and coach Sullivan only wishes he had ten more like him. Plus, More-Than-Willing Will has emerged as a key figure in "The New Core." (What's not to like?) 2. JONNY BRODZINSKI: Ham Lake, Minnesota's gift to Manhattan was listed as "fifth center" a year ago. That was another way of saying, "Enjoy, Hartford, Pal." And, if you really wanna know the truth, 32-year-old Brod would have been perfectly happy, working with young Wolf Pack prospects. But Jonny was such a successful fill-in that management preferred him with the Big Club. (He should be a fixture this year.) 3. BRADEN SCHNEIDER: Unobtrusively, and without any fuss or fanfare this model of a solid, all-round defender should be regarded as the Number Two blue liner right behind Adam Fox. Just 24, Schneid has reached his prime simply by doing the right things at his position; as opposed to K'Andre Miller who was listed #2 a year ago. (We found out what a mistake that was, didn't we?) Promise For The Rangers Or Failure? Who Do You Want To Believe? Let's not kid ourselves, at this point of midsummer it's impossible how the Rangers will fare in the fall, winter or spring next season. 4. ADAM EDSTROM: The Swede's buddy, Matt Rempe, could take some lessons from his alter ego skyscraper. Adam doesn't do what Matt does. Edstrom doesn't get suspended; he doesn't do crazy, illegal board checks and he plays smart. Rempe should have spent the summer taking lessons from Edstrom. Right now it appears that Adam is a sure thing in terms of making the varsity. The Remper? (No guarantees at this time.) 5. JONATHAN QUICK: The S.O.S. Man, Long Jon has become the backup goalie's backup goalie. He's also commodore-in-chief behind the scenes, especially in the clubhouse. (Quite frankly, if the spirit moved him. Quckie could shout "Hallelujah" and play two more seasons.)
