Can parents keep tabs on the social media use of teens?

The Hindu08-05-2025
The recent death of a young entrepreneur, who reportedly took the extreme step after she lost followers on social media, is sufficient reason for us to pause and assess the role of social media in our lives.
There is no doubt that social media is here to stay and has a huge role to play in our lives. By holding up a world that seems perfect, and fickle with its devotion, social media can take a toll on mental health, particularly that of youngsters. On the other hand, the Netflix series Adolescence dragged us willy-nilly into a world of teenagers that adults thought they understood but were actually far off the mark from.
Given the centrality of social media in the lives of children, how can adults navigate this terrain?
Can parents keep tabs on the social media use of teens? Here we discuss the question.

Parents of RG Kar victim seek permission from city court for access to crime scene

Parents of the doctor who was raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year, made a prayer to a city court on Monday (July 7, 2025), requesting to revisit the crime scene. The matter is likely to be heard by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court tomorrow. On August 9, 2024, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar hall of the chest medicine department on the fourth floor of the emergency building of the State-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. 'We do not think that the Central Bureau of Investigation is carrying out a proper investigation to nab all culprits. So it is essential that we, with our legal counsel, can access the seminar hall where it all unfolded. A revisit will help our lawyers answer questions during future court proceedings. Many questions are asked about the crime scene, which our current lawyer has not seen,' the victim's father told The Hindu on Monday (July 7, 2025). He added that Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court had directed them to approach the Sealdah court to seek permission for revisiting the place of occurrence. Notably, last year, former principal of the medical college, Sandip Ghosh, was accused of tampering with the crime scene after an official letter signed by him and dated August 10 had surfaced online, directing 'urgent' renovations in every department of the hospital. Concerns were also raised around the police probe when a video had surfaced online capturing a crowd at the crime scene after the body was found. The police had later clarified that 'a 40-foot area' around the victim's body had been cordoned off, but the victim's parents had contested their claims. While civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was pronounced guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for the doctor's rape and murder in January this year, the parents had petitioned the Calcutta High Court for further investigation into the case. In an earlier conversation with The Hindu, the family had expressed their dissatisfaction with the CBI's ongoing probe into the case. Renewed protest march on one-year mark The victim's parents also said on Monday (July 7, 2025) that they would 'definitely be present' at the 'Nabanna Abhiyan' (march to State Secretariat) rally against the State government on August 9, 2025. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, after meeting them last week, said he would 'participate in the protest without flags' and 'make all efforts to make the movement successful'. August 9 would mark one year since the unfortunate incident. Additionally, activists have given a call to re-initiate 'Reclaim The Night' protests on August 14, one year since its inception on the same day last year. 'We will also attend the Reclaim The Night protest that is being organised on August 14, like last year. We will try to cover as many locations as possible,' the bereaved father said. Last year, on August 14 and subsequently on other nights, women's rights organisations had organised massive 'Reclaim The Night' protests late at night across the State, urging people, especially women, to leave their homes and march for the right to navigate public spaces safely after dark.

Six people from West Bengal deported by Delhi Police

Members of two different families, one from Murarai village and another from Paikar village, in West Bengal's Birbhum district have alleged that six family members including two women and two minors, were detained by Delhi Police and later 'pushed' into Bangladesh because they were suspected of being 'illegal' Bangladeshis. Both families have written to the Delhi Police seeking a response and said that they shall approach the courts. In one letter, Bhodu Shek has alleged that Danish Sekh, his wife Sunali Khatun, and their minor son Sabir Shek were deported by the K N Katju Marg police station that falls under Delhi's Rohini police district on June 26. According to Shek, his daughter and son-in-law went to Delhi on May 5 and were detained on June 18 by officers from the K N Katju Marg police station (Rohini). 'For the verification process we submitted voter cards, Aadhaar cards, and land deeds to the local police, but they did not release them,' said Khatun's cousin Roshni Bibi, who was also her neighbour in the capital. She added that at the time, the family of three was detained; the police did not take the daughter since she was living with her aunt, away from Shek's residence. Thorough interrogation Speaking to The Hindu, DCP (Rohini) said that these three 'Bangladeshis had no valid documents and had admitted that they were Bangladeshis, only then were they sent back.' He added that the family in question was from Bagerhat and that they have been sent back to Bangladesh. 'They were deported along with many Bangladeshis, on June 26 by a flight from Delhi after obtaining deportation orders from the FRRO,' said the DCP A similar letter was written by Anjela Bibi from Murari, Birbhum, who wrote to the Delhi Police about her family members: Sweety Bibi, her elder son Kurban Sheikh, and minor son Iman Dewan. Bibi, Sweety's mother-in-law, alleged that the family of three hailing from Murarai, who were living in Delhi and working as waste pickers, were detained on June 18, along with the other three people from Birbhum. 'The two families lived in Rohini as neighbours and were waste pickers,' she said adding that her neighbours in Birbhum told her that her daughter-in-law and grandsons had been detained and later deported on June 26. The six people were detained from Bengali Basti in Rohini's sector 26, and according to a Delhi Police general diary, both the families allegedly told the police that they were from Bagerhat, Bangladesh, following which they were handed over to the FRRO. The two families told The Hindu that they will be approaching the court over the 'illegal' deportation.

Five members of family burnt alive in Bihar's Purnia district on allegation of witchcraft

Five members of a family, three of them women, were burnt alive in Purnia district of Bihar over allegations of practising witchcraft, the police said. The incident took place on Sunday (July 6, 2025) night at Tetgama village under Muffasil police station limits. Speaking to The Hindu, Purnia Deputy Inspector-General of Police Pramod Kumar Mandal said, 'The child of a resident, Ramdev Mahto, fell ill and he had approached Babulal Oraon, 50, for treatment but the child did not survive. The death happened three days ago. Hence, Oraon and his family were beaten with sticks and then burnt alive. The bodies were stuffed into sacks and dumped.' Mr. Mandal further said that three persons were arrested in connection with the incident and a tractor used to dump the bodies was seized. Also read: 'Health a major reason behind witchcraft-related violence' The murders were witnessed by Oraon's 16-year-old son, who managed to escape and inform his maternal grandparents. The murders were then disclosed to the police, who recovered the burnt bodies, the officer added. The deceased were identified as Oraon, Sita Devi, 48, Kato Devi, 65, Manjit Oraon, 25, and Rani Devi, 23. The 16-year-old told the media that his mother was accused of performing witchcraft and a meeting was held on Sunday (July 6, 2025) night under the leadership of Nakul Oraon. 'About 200 people attended the meeting. My father and mother were called and the villagers decided to kill them. They were assaulted with sticks and then burnt alive after being doused in petrol. Their bodies were loaded on a tractor and taken to a deserted place and dumped,' the minor body said while speaking to the media on Monday. As soon as the information was received, the personnel from Mufassil police station and two other stations reached the spot. Superintendent of Police Sweety Sahrawat and Assistant SP Alok Ranjan also reached the spot to investigate the case. Mufassil Station House Officer Uttam Kumar said the tractor driver and Mr. Nakul Oraon have been arrested and police had recovered all five bodies on Monday (July 7, 2025). Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Tejashwi Yadav slammed the government over the incident, and took a dig at Deepak Kumar, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He posted on X: 'In Purnia, 5 members of the same family were burned alive and killed. Due to DK Tax, anarchy is at its peak in Bihar, DGP/CS helpless, law and order collapsed. Day before yesterday in Siwan, 3 people were killed in a massacre, 3 died in Buxar and 3 in Bhojpur. Criminals are alert, Chief Minister unconscious, Corrupt Bhoonja Party thriving, police defeated! DK is enjoying it because DK is the real boss.'
