Parents of RG Kar victim seek permission from city court for access to crime scene

The Hindua day ago
Parents of the doctor who was raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year, made a prayer to a city court on Monday (July 7, 2025), requesting to revisit the crime scene.
The matter is likely to be heard by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court tomorrow.
On August 9, 2024, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar hall of the chest medicine department on the fourth floor of the emergency building of the State-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
'We do not think that the Central Bureau of Investigation is carrying out a proper investigation to nab all culprits. So it is essential that we, with our legal counsel, can access the seminar hall where it all unfolded. A revisit will help our lawyers answer questions during future court proceedings. Many questions are asked about the crime scene, which our current lawyer has not seen,' the victim's father told The Hindu on Monday (July 7, 2025).
He added that Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court had directed them to approach the Sealdah court to seek permission for revisiting the place of occurrence.
Notably, last year, former principal of the medical college, Sandip Ghosh, was accused of tampering with the crime scene after an official letter signed by him and dated August 10 had surfaced online, directing 'urgent' renovations in every department of the hospital.
Concerns were also raised around the police probe when a video had surfaced online capturing a crowd at the crime scene after the body was found. The police had later clarified that 'a 40-foot area' around the victim's body had been cordoned off, but the victim's parents had contested their claims.
While civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was pronounced guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for the doctor's rape and murder in January this year, the parents had petitioned the Calcutta High Court for further investigation into the case.
In an earlier conversation with The Hindu, the family had expressed their dissatisfaction with the CBI's ongoing probe into the case.
Renewed protest march on one-year mark
The victim's parents also said on Monday (July 7, 2025) that they would 'definitely be present' at the 'Nabanna Abhiyan' (march to State Secretariat) rally against the State government on August 9, 2025. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, after meeting them last week, said he would 'participate in the protest without flags' and 'make all efforts to make the movement successful'.
August 9 would mark one year since the unfortunate incident. Additionally, activists have given a call to re-initiate 'Reclaim The Night' protests on August 14, one year since its inception on the same day last year.
'We will also attend the Reclaim The Night protest that is being organised on August 14, like last year. We will try to cover as many locations as possible,' the bereaved father said.
Last year, on August 14 and subsequently on other nights, women's rights organisations had organised massive 'Reclaim The Night' protests late at night across the State, urging people, especially women, to leave their homes and march for the right to navigate public spaces safely after dark.

Manipur HC directs NIA to submit detailed progress report on Jiribam killings

The Manipur High Court has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to submit a detailed progress report on the murder of six civilians, including three minors, in Jiribam district in November last year. The directive was issued by a division bench comprising Chief Justice K Somashekar and Justice A Bimol Singh on Monday while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Soram Tekendrajit. During the hearing, the High Court took serious note of the NIA's failure to make any significant progress in the case and cited that the incident took place in November 2024. 'The incident occurred on 11.11.2024 and on the same day, an FIR was registered by the competent authority. However, till date, no progress report has been submitted by the concerned investigation agency under Section 167 of the CrPC,' the court pointed out. 'The counsel of the case seeks a short adjournment on the premise that he wants to submit a detailed progress report in terms of chargesheet. If the chargesheet is not filed, this matter should be viewed seriously,' the court said. Directing the NIA to submit a detailed progress report, the bench scheduled the next hearing for July 24. On November 11, 2024, a gunfight broke out between security forces and armed Hmar men in Jiribam's Jakuradhor and Borobekra area, close to the hills of neighbouring Hmar majority Pherzawl district. The incident left 10 Hmar men, suspected to be militants, dead while six Meitei people living in a relief camp went missing. All of them, three women and three children, from the same family, were reportedly abducted by armed militants. Days after their abduction, the bodies of the six victims were fished out from the Jiri river in Jiribam district and the Barak river in Cachar district. The victims are identified as Yumrembam Rani Devi (60), Telem Thoibi Devi (31) and her daughter Telem Thajamanbi Devi (8), Laishram Heithoibi Devi (25) and her two children – Laishram Chingkheinganba Singh (two-and-a-half years old) and Laishram Lamnganba (10 months old).

Don't let TNSTC buses cross toll plazas in south Tamil Nadu, Madras High Court directs four NHAI concessionaires

The Madras High Court, on Tuesday (July 8, 2025), ordered that Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses shall not be allowed to ply through the toll plazas maintained by four concessionaires on the national highways leading to the southern districts of the State from July 10. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh said, he had no choice but to take the extreme step of preventing public transportation through the toll plazas since the State transport department had not taken steps to settle arrears of ₹276 crore to the four National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) concessionaires. 'Deploy police' Conscious of passing a shocking order that could lead to law and order situation, the judge directed the Director General of Police/Head of Police Force (DGP/HoPF) to ensure deputation of adequate police force at Kappalur, Etturavattam, Salaipudhur and Nanguneri toll plazas to prevent untoward incidents. The judge directed the High Court Registry to mark a copy of his interim order to the DGP as well as the Inspector General of Police (south zone) for compliance in letter and spirit and decided to take stock of the situation on July 15. The concessionaires Madurai-Kanniyakumari Tollway Private Limited, Kanniyakumari-Etturavattam Tollway Private Limited, Salaipudur-Madurai Tollway Private Limited and Nanguneri-Kanniyakumari Tollway Private Limited had approached the court last year by filing individual writ petitions. Senior counsel Sathish Parasaran, representing the writ petitioners, contended that his clients had been suffering huge losses due to the failure of Tamil Nadu government buses to pay toll charges despite using the national highways for transporting their passengers. No Fastag He said, most of the government buses also do not have Fastag facility in violation of the rules framed by the Centre. Mr. Parasaran said, the toll plaza staff could not dare to stop the buses, for non-payment of toll, because of the fear of it snowballing into a law and order situation. It was brought to the notice of the court that the State transport corporations had settled only about ₹48.5 crore and that still ₹276 crore (including the principal amount of ₹116 crore apart from penalty and interest) was yet to be paid to the four NHAI concessionaires. After recording the submissions, Justice Venkatesh said, the amount might end up growing to over ₹300 to ₹400 crore if the transport corporations continue to prolong the issue without quickly sitting across the table with the concessionaires in order to settle the dues. He also observed the government officials may not understand the seriousness of the issue and act swiftly unless an extreme step of stopping the buses at the toll plazas was resorted to. He said, the corporations had brought such a precarious situation upon themselves thereby adversely affecting the common people.

Shivamogga woman's death following ‘ritual to ward off evil forces' shocks village; people demand action against ‘godmen', ‘god-women'

The death of a 55-year-old woman, allegedly after she was beaten severely in the name of 'driving away evil forces', has left the residents of Jambarghatta near Holehonnur in Bhadravathi taluk in shock. Unable to come to terms with the unexpected turn of events, the villagers have blamed the woman, who claimed to be possessed by special powers, for the death. Geetha, 55, collapsed on Sunday night, allegedly after being beaten up by Asha, 45, as part of the ritual to 'drive away evil forces' near the temple of Chowdeshwari in the village. Doctors at the community health centre at Holehonnur declared her 'brought dead' at 5.30 a.m. on Monday (July 7). The police learnt about the incident only in the evening and registered a case, besides arresting three people. The arrested are Asha, who allegedly tortured the victim; her husband, Santhosh, who assisted his wife in the ghastly ritual; and Geetha's son, Sanjay, who took his mother for the ritual. 'God-woman' When The Hindu visited the village on Tuesday (July 8, 2025), the family members were in tears, waiting for the arrival of the body after a post-mortem. They were shattered by Geetha's death and the arrest of Sanjay, her son, in the case. Geetha's daughter Shalini said, 'Asha claimed to be a god-woman. Let her come now and wake my mother up.' Geetha, a mother of three children, lost her husband more than 10 years ago. She fended for the family by working in agricultural fields, as yield from the family-owned four guntas of land was insufficient to feed them. Sanjay studied up to SSLC and began working as a construction worker. Shalini is married to Avinash of Hadadi in Davangere. Sachin Kumar, the younger son, completed his education and currently works as a civil engineer in Hyderabad. He came home after learning about his mother's tragic death. Video recorded 'For the last few weeks, she (Geetha) had remained inactive and upset. Asha, who was also in the neighbourhood, felt that she had been possessed by evil forces, and had to go through a ritual to be relieved of them. She convinced Sanjay that his mother would be back to normal after the ritual. Sanjay agreed to it, but that proved fatal,' said Avinash, Geetha's son-in-law. The accused got the video of the ritual recorded so she could use it to prove her skill. Following the incident, the video clips have gone viral in Shivamogga. The clips show the accused beating the victim with a cane. Asha even refuses to give water despite Geetha repeatedly asking for it, the video shows. According to the villagers, Asha had been claiming 'godly powers'. However, elders in the village had recently held a meeting and insisted that she should not conduct any ritual, doubting her abilities. But she refused to obey them, said Jyothi, a resident of the village. Programme to create awareness When The Hindu contacted Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegade, he said, 'Shivamogga is a place known for progressive people and writers. Such incidents happening here is really sad. We will identify areas where there is lack of awareness and work out a programme to reach them. We will engage officials of RDPR, Women and Child Development, Social Welfare and other departments ensure such incidents do not occur in the future.'
