Yes, oui, Cannes! Glamour name eyes place in French Cup final

Cannes players celebrate after beating Guingamp in the French Cup quarter-finals in February. They host Reims of Ligue 1 in the last four on Wednesday (Frederic DIDES)
The French Cup is a tournament with a reputation for producing upsets and Cannes are the latest name dreaming of a shock result when the fourth-tier club play host to top-flight Reims in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Paris Saint-Germain have unsurprisingly dominated the competition in recent years and are favourites to retain the trophy as they prepare to take on Dunkerque of Ligue 2 in the first semi-final on Tuesday.
However, Cannes are following the example set by numerous other clubs from the lower leagues in recent years.
Les Herbiers and Quevilly, both from the third division, each got to the final in the last decade, losing narrowly to PSG and Lyon respectively.
More recently, fourth-tier clubs Versailles and Rumilly-Vallieres have made the semi-finals in the last four seasons.
The ultimate example, however, is Calais, who in 2000 emerged from the fourth tier to get to the final, where they were unlucky to lose to Nantes.

Nevertheless, the Channel port of Calais does not have quite the same glamour as Cannes, the Cote d'Azur resort better known for its annual film festival than its football team.
- Zidane's first club -
And yet AS Cannes are a historic name in the French game. They won the French Cup in 1932 and were a fixture in the top flight for a time in the 1980s and 1990s, even making it to the UEFA Cup.
Zinedine Zidane began his career in the Cannes youth academy and was handed his debut aged 16 in 1989, while a few years later Patrick Vieira was given his senior bow in a Cannes shirt.
But the club slipped out of the professional leagues and disappeared practically into oblivion, being expelled to the depths of the seventh tier in 2014 due to financial problems.

They have slowly been working their way back up the divisions, and in 2023 were taken over by the US-based Friedkin Group which is involved in the film industry but also owns Roma and recently bought Everton.
A world away from Serie A and the Premier League, Cannes have an operating budget of five million euros ($5.4m), and a total wage bill of one million euros, the club's general manager Felicien Laborde told AFP in February.
- Friedkin takeover -
Of the Friedkins, Laborde told sports daily L'Equipe that "they delegate completely, just like they do at Roma and Everton, with whom there is no collaboration".

"The difference in level is too great and they respect the different characteristics of each club," he said.
He was speaking ahead of the quarter-final against Guingamp, who became the third Ligue 2 club eliminated by Cannes in this season's Cup, after Grenoble and Lorient.
The stars in this Cannes team are the 39-year-old former Senegal midfielder Cheikh N'Doye, once of Birmingham City, and the prolific forward Julien Domingues.
Cannes currently find themselves in the National 2, France's fourth tier which is split into three regionalised divisions, each comprising 16 teams.

The side finishing top of each group wins promotion, although Cannes are third in Group A, eight points behind leaders Le Puy with seven games left.
"The Cup has give us a taste of the top level, as well as the desire to get back there," admitted Laborde, who insisted promotion was the priority over the Cup.
However, after going five months unbeaten, Cannes have lost their last two matches, and it looks like that is going to prove costly in terms of promotion.
Now Reims stand in their way in a Cup tie which Cannes will host at their Stade Pierre de Coubertin, a few kilometres west of the Croisette.

Two-time European Cup finalists in the 1950s, Reims are themselves hoping to reach the French Cup final for the first time since 1977 amid a difficult season in Ligue 1.
"They are a Ligue 1 club, so if they want to take us they will take us. It all depends on them," admitted Cannes coach Damien Ott, subtly nudging the pressure onto the opposition.

PSG Eliminates Lionel Messi and Inter Miami From the FIFA Club World Cup

Inter Miami's run in the FIFA Club World Cup is over. Lionel Messi-led Miami, the only one of Major League Soccer's three participating clubs to advance to the 32-team tournament's round of 16, were humbled by European champions Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 on Sunday in Atlanta. PSG, the club Messi played for from 2021 until arriving in South Florida two summers ago, won its first UEFA Champions League title last month, beating Inter Milan 5-0 in the continental final. Sunday's match went much the same way. The French titans ran out to a lopsided first-half lead and never looked back. Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves opened the scoring just five minutes into the match on an unmarked header from point-blank range. Miami tightened up defensively after that — until a fatal six-minute stretch at the end of the first half. Neves doubled the Parisians' advantage in the 39th-minute, and PSG added two more goals before the halftime whistle sounded. The first was an own goal by substitute Herons defender Tomas Aviles, who came on for an injured Noah Allen. Star PSG fullback Achraf Hakimi then made it 4-0 in first half stoppage time, effectively ending the contest there and then. PSG is coached by Spaniard Luis Enrique, who managed Messi plus Miami teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez plus Herons' boss Javier Mascherano with Barcelona in the mid-2010s. The Champions League winners will take on either Brazilian giants Flamengo or European rivals Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals next Saturday. That game will also be staged at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Georgia's capital. Miami returns to MLS regular season action next Saturday, when they face CF Montreal north of the border. MLS clubs LAFC and the Seattle Sounders were eliminated from the Club World Cup in the group stage. Neither won a game. Miami, meantime, went undefeated in the first round, beating two-time European champ Porto and tying Brazil's Palmeiras and Egypt's Al Ahly. PSG strikes early, takes 1-0 lead over Messi, Inter Miami in Club World Cup Round of 16

The first 'Messi! Messi!' chants inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium began at exactly 11:22 a.m. Sunday morning, as an expected crowd of more than 62,000 filed in for the highly anticipated Club World Cup Round of 16 showdown between Lionel Messi's Inter Miami team and his former team, Paris Saint-Germain. It is a game with many interesting subplots, starting with the fact that despite having Messi and his high-profile friends on the roster, Inter Miami was a heavy underdog against a PSG team that just won the Champions League final 5-0 over Inter Milan, a team stacked with multi-millionaire stars. The French powerhouse showed its dominance from the opening whistle, pressing high and then taking a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on header by a wide open Joao Neves on a free kick from the left by Vitinha. Inter Miami's Starting XI featured Oscar Ustari, Marcelo Weigandt, Maxi Falcon, Noah Allen, Jordi Allen, Tadeo Allende, Fede Redondo, Sergio Busquets, Telasco Segovia, Messi (captain), Luis Suarez. Allen went down with an apparent hamstring injury at the 19-minute mark, was replaced by Toto Aviles, who one minute later was shown a yellow card for a bad foul. PSG's starters included Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos (captain), Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Joao Neves, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola. In addition to the Messi and PSG reunion, the game also featured PSG coach Luis Enrique against five of his former FC Barcelona players, Messi, Suarez, Busquets, Alba, and Javier Mascherano, now the Inter Miami coach and a protégé of Enrique's. Both coaches discussed their special relationship in the leadup to the game. Mascherano acknowledged that his team's improbable undefeated three-game run in this tournament led them to a game that is much more daunting. But his team is up for the challenge, he said. 'We know going into this game that we are the weaker team, but don't dismiss us, we are going to fight,' Mascherano said. 'The beautiful thing about this game is that we earned the right to play in it. Going into the tournament, to be honest, it was difficult for us to have this opportunity. But our players did well and earned it. 'The challenge now is to come in and prove ourselves against the best team in the world. And while it will be hard, we will look for that moment when maybe the game turns and gives us a chance to reach the next round.' Inter Miami co-owners David Beckham and Jorge and Jose Mas were at the game, and shared their thoughts with 'We're super proud, we started Inter Miami with dreaming,' said Jorge Mas. 'It's on our jersey, `Freedom to Dream'. To be standing here playing in the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup against the European champions is a dream come true. 'But it's only part of our journey. We continue dreaming big. Irrespective of the outcome [Sunday], we're going continue dreaming so that when people think of futbol in the United States, they'll think of Inter Miami. It's a historic moment for our club.' Beckham, who was an arm sling following surgery, said: 'This a big moment to be playing against a team that in my opinion is the best team inn the world. It's going to be a tough game, but anything in possible. Freedom to Dream is written on our jersey, and we have to believe in that.' Mascherano urged his players to embrace and enjoy the moment. 'I don't know how many chances we will have as a club to face an opponent like PSG; well, [Sunday] we have it and have to take advantage of it and enjoy it,' he said. 'And, also, show that we, with our limitations and virtues, not saying go toe-to-toe with them, but give them a good game.' Falcon said: 'It's going to be a great game, a great experience for me as a player, as I have never had that chance before. We will try to leave it all on the field, like we did the last three games, anything can happen, but we know it will be a very difficult game.'
