According to Italian outlet La Repubblica, Genoa had agreed personal terms with Vardy following negotiations spearheaded by sporting director Flavio Ricciardella.
But despite claims that Genoa had even enlisted financial help from club sponsors to pay Vardy's wages, the deal was abandoned after Vieira didn't give his seal of approval.
The Premier League icon reportedly told club execs he didn't want Vardy, bringing the deal to an abrupt close.
SunSport have contacted Vardy's representatives for comment.

The former England international leaves the Foxes with a satisfying record of 200 goals in 500 appearances.
And although a potential move to Genoa appears to be off the cards, Vardy could be heading to a European giant instead.
Reports suggest that the veteran striker is closing in on a move to Rangers to play under new boss Russell Martin.

Vardy is thought to be "open" to a move to the Scottish club.
He has been urged to make the jump and raise the standards at the club by managerial icon Tony Pulis.
Emotional Leicester fans say 'delete this' as club share pics of Jamie Vardy packing his things into a cardboard box
The legendary former Stoke boss said: 'If Jamie Vardy went to Rangers he would be joining a huge rivalry, they have new owners and will want to invest into the team to make things more competitive.
'Russell Martin is at a massive, massive football club and that comes with expectations. If he does bring big names in, that will go through the roof.
'Brendan Rodgers has done an unbelievable job at Celtic and Russell will be under enormous pressure to get closer to them next year."
However, Pulis warned that Rangers will have to act fast with Vardy likely to be in high demand.
He added: 'Jamie Vardy will not be short of offers. You don't know whether he's waiting for another Premier League club to come in for him, but he's been a fantastic player.
'Taking Leicester to the Premier League title, winning the FA Cup, he is a fit lad and doesn't look to have put any weight on. I'm sure he will have something on his mind.
'He'll have a preference and he might be waiting to see what offers he gets, but he will have options all over the world.'

Man Utd ready to sign 'useful' free agent after failing to land transfer target

Manchester United will still hope to make a bigger splash in the transfer window after seeing their efforts slow down following the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves Manchester United's quest to improve Ruben Amorim's squad goes on with little over a month until the Premier League returns. And the Portuguese coach will soon have his squad in pre-season training ahead of a tour to the United States. The summer transfer window got off to a quick start with the arrival of Matheus Cunha, but the Red Devils have not been able to build on that momentum. Only the arrival of teenager star Diego Leon has been confirmed since with plenty of work to be done. ‌ United have failed to trim their squad thus far too. Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof departed at the end of their contracts, while Jonny Evans moved to a coaching role but Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho all remain at Old Trafford. ‌ But the club still hope to strengthen in their forward positions despite being unable to secure an agreement for Bryan Mbeumo thus far. An out-and-out striker may not go amiss for Amorim too. United eye free agent Manchester United are ready to sign free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a cost-effective solution for Ruben Amorim's squad. United are in the process of rebuilding their squad the Portuguese coach is said to believe that Calvert-Lewin would be a useful addition alongside more expensive signings. Despite a poor injury record, reports claim that United believe the forward has the qualities required to bolster Amorim's squad. United are ready to offer Calvert-Lewin a contract which would include bonuses tied into appearances as they eye a handy squad player. Calvert-Lewin left Everton after nine years at the end of June and is looking for a new club. The 28-year-old striker scored 71 goals in 273 appearances for the Toffees after joining them from Sheffield United in 2016. ‌ Gyokeres latest Any hope Manchester United had of landing Viktor Gyokeres appears to be over as Arsenal close in on deal for the Sweden striker. The Gunners are advancing in talks with Sporting Lisbon as the Portuguese side granted the striker additional time off as they seek to resolve his future. Andrea Berta had been progressing deals for Gyokeres and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, but the former now appears to have won out as Arsenal move closer to finally signing a striker. The two clubs have yet to agree on a fee but it is understood Arsenal and Gyokeres have already agreed personal terms. And with the player prioritising a move to Arsenal, having rejected other suitors, it now looks likely that a deal will be completed. ‌ Sancho update Juventus are preparing to make an offer to Manchester United for Jadon Sancho. The Serie A side are said to have already held talks with the winger, who is reportedly open to life in Italy. Per Corriere dello Sport, Juve are willing to allow Douglas Luiz to move in the opposite direction to aid a move. Sancho is said to have been yet to agree personal terms but is willing to reduce his salary. The Old Lady is said to also be considering a move for Tottenham's Yves Bissouma. Arsenal have signed midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. The Spain international, 26, moves to the Emirates Stadium on a long-term deal after the Gunners reportedly triggered his £51million release clause. Euro 2024 winner Zubimendi had previously been a target for Liverpool and was also linked with Real Madrid. Zubimendi told the club website: 'This is a huge moment in my career. It's the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are. 'I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come.' Hemp knows the score Lauren Hemp in action for England (Adam Davy/PA) Forward Lauren Hemp insists England know what is at stake when they play the Netherlands on Wednesday as they bid to keep their European title defence alive. The Lionesses' backs are against the wall after suffering an tournament-opening 2-1 defeat to France to set up what is already being billed as a 'must-win' meeting with 2017 champions the Netherlands. 'This team, a lot of the time, we thrive under pressure,' said Manchester City forward Hemp. 'Obviously it's one of those situations. Every game we go into, we want to win. 'From how we acted in the last 10 minutes (against France), we know what's at stake, and obviously we want to get as far as we can. 'We are reigning champions. It is important to remember that and gain confidence from that.' Martin quiet on Vardy Jamie Vardy is a free agent after leaving Leicester (Nigel French/PA) Russell Martin refused to be drawn on reports linking Rangers with a move for former England and Leicester striker Jamie Vardy. The 38-year-old forward, who has seen a move to Genoa fall through, has now been heavily touted for a switch to Ibrox after leaving the Foxes at the end of last season. Recently appointed Rangers boss Martin remained coy but refused to dismiss the prospect, when asked after his side's 2-2 pre-season friendly draw at home to Club Brugge on Sunday if Vardy was a target. 'I think I've been asked about so many players,' he said. 'Some miles away, some on the money. So basically, I'm not going to give you an answer on that. 'But I guess you'll find out who's real and who's not in the next few weeks.' What's on today?
