Hawaiian Humane Society unveils Pets in Paradise calendar contest
Gov. Josh Green on Monday named Dori Booth to the role, reestablishing the position that was dissolved in 1979.
The move follows recommendations from independent investigations into the deadly 2023 Maui wildfires, which called for stronger statewide coordination on fire safety.
Booth is a U.S. Army veteran and seasoned fire safety leader and is tasked with building a modern fire protection system from the ground up.Her responsibilities include implementing top reforms highlighted in wildfire reports and bridging gaps between county and state emergency services.
'This is about saving lives and protecting communities,' Green said. 'Dori's leadership will be central to building a safer, more resilient Hawai'i.'
Booth brings more than 20 years of experience, including senior roles in Arizona's fire service. She has led fire prevention efforts in both rural and urban settings and has been active in national fire safety policy work.
The Legislature reinstated the fire marshal position in 2024, placing it under the Department of Law Enforcement. Officials said the role is key to improving disaster preparedness as climate-driven wildfire risks grow.

'We can't prevent every disaster,' Booth said, 'but we can be far better prepared for the next one.'

This Philadelphia summer camp shows kids how to prepare and enjoy healthy foods
A summer camp in Philadelphia is helping students learn about healthy cooking and giving them a safe, structured activity that's fun and empowering. This "Recipe for Summer Stability" is about learning and being healthy — and having some fun with food. At Vetri Cooking Lab at Mastery Charter in South Philly, students get hands-on food education. Students on Wednesday made burrito bowls filled with healthy vegetables and got plenty of instruction on safe chopping techniques. The classes for students in third through 12th grade are run by Vetri Community Partnership. CEO Maddy Booth said the organization helps kids stay engaged in learning and eating well during the summer, which can be challenging. "We want to provide the education that will help us make … really thoughtful decisions about food," Booth said. Doctors say eating healthy can be challenging in underserved neighborhoods, where there are often high rates of obesity and diabetes. This aims to change that by empowering the next generation with knowledge about the importance of healthy eating. "What we're trying to encourage folks to do is to eat and enjoy fruits and vegetables as part of their lives," Booth said. Fourteen-year-old Taylor-Marie Freeman said she likes trying new foods, and she's been enjoying lots of carrots at camp. "I feel like I'm eating more healthy here, more than at home," Freeman said. The recipes come with measurements and cooking instructions, and students learn how combining certain ingredients creates different tastes. "When we come in these classes, they get math in a different aspect that's outside the classroom, so they're still learning while cooking at the same time," teacher Sean Kelly said. The free camp runs at 12 locations around Philadelphia through the summer.

Army military parade in DC cost $30 million
The Army spent around $30 million on the military parade to mark the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, which also fell on the day of President Trump's 79th birthday. 'I can confirm the total for the Army festival and parade cost approximately $30 million,' an Army spokesperson told The Hill on Wednesday. The initial cost of the parade was estimated to be between $25 million and $45 million, not including police, damage to the city streets and cleanup. Approximately 6,700 soldiers, dressed in historic and modern uniforms, marched in the parade. The military showcased a wide range of equipment, including rolling tanks, tactical vehicles, aircraft and artillery weapons. The parade drew thousands of spectators. Authorities placed miles of fencing and were screening all of the people who got close to the area, either to participate in the events leading up to the parade or just to watch the parade. Trump held a brief speech where he expressed gratitude to those who served in the armed forces. 'Every other country celebrates their victories. It's about time America did, too. That's what we're doing tonight,' Trump said. 'Watching this magnificent display, our souls are filled with gratitude for every generation of warriors who have worn the uniform back to the very beginning,' the president later added. Due to concerns over lightning, the Army did cancel the planned flyover of F-22 fighter planes. But, other events took place, including U.S. Army Golden Knights parachuting in and helicopters, such as Apache and Black Hawk, flying near the National Mall. 'To our soldiers, we're so proud of you. And let me tell you, the way that we honor and respect you, number one, we never ask you to go to war unless you absolutely have to,' Vice President Vance said at the parade 'And number two, when we do ask you to go to war, we give you the weapons and the support needed to kick the hell out of the enemy and come back home safely,' the vice president added.

ICE, Army to build nation's biggest immigrant jail
A private company will build a 5,000-bed tent city to detain immigrants on Fort Bliss in Texas. The U.S. Army has hired a contractor to build the nation's largest ICE detention center, the latest move by President Donald Trump to use the military to deliver his promised mass deportations. Virginia-based Acquisition Logistics LLC will erect a temporary immigration detention center on Fort Bliss, in El Paso, Texas, near the southern border, with 5,000 beds, under a $232 million contract, according to the Department of Defense. It's likely the cost will rise. A similar tent city built to house unaccompanied migrant children on Fort Bliss in 2021 during the Biden administration ballooned within months to nearly $1 billion. Acquisition Logistics has served as a private contractor to the U.S. Navy, Air Force and Marines for more than a decade, according to federal procurement data. The company's website was "down for maintenance" on July 23, and USA TODAY couldn't reach a company representative online or by phone. Trump has vowed to deport millions of immigrants in the country illegally, and Congress recently appropriated $170 billion in new money to help him do it. The nation's system of immigration detention centers is under strain, as arrests of undocumented immigrants have risen in recent months. The White House touted its arrest record in a statement July 22: "Across the country, arrests of criminal illegal immigrants have soared as President Donald J. Trump makes good on his promise to rid our communities of these threats to public safety." The latest ICE data showed there were nearly 57,000 people in immigration detention, up from fewer than 40,000 at the close of the Biden administration.
