Ex-Bayern Munich Defender Rafinha Calls Time On Career
"It's with a heavy heart that I'm ending something that I've done my whole life. But everything has a beginning and an end, and I have no regrets. I achieved everything that I wanted to in football," he said.
Rafinha began his career at Coritiba in 2002 before moving to Germany's Schalke in 2005 till 2010. The right-back later played for Genoa (2010 - 2011), Bayern Munich and Flamengo, among others, before returning to Coritiba in December last year. He was capped four times for Brazil.
The Brazilian right-back made a total of 266 competitive appearances for Bayern. He lifted seven Bundesliga titles, four DFB Cups and was an integral part of the 2013 treble-winning team.
Rafinha's club Sao Paulo paid tribute to their departing captain, recognising the significance of his contributions both in terms of silverware and his leadership. "Our captain in the conquests of the 2023 Copa do Brasil and the 2024 Supercopa Rei, Marcio Rafael Ferreira de Souza announced his retirement from the pitch on this 21st of July, 2025.
"A Sao Paulo fan at heart, Rafinha fulfilled his dream of defending the Tricolor from 2022 to 2024, honouring our jersey in 117 matches. Congratulations on your beautiful journey in football and much success in your next challenges!"

English Premier League clubs splurge £1.63bn in current transfer window; Liverpool biggest spenders, Arsenal third, Manchester United fourth
From the start of June — when the transfer window opened — until now, English Premier League clubs have collectively spent £1.63 billion on players, a BBC report revealed. Citing data from Transfermarkt, the report added that the last season's top four teams are five of the biggest spenders heading into the new season. Manchester United, who finished a lowly 15th, are the only team from the bottom half who are in the top five, ahead of their bitter rivals Manchester City. Out of the £1.63 billion, a little more than £1 billion was spent by just six teams — Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, in that order. After winning the league last season by 10 points, Liverpool haven't wasted time on bolstering their squad. They are comfortably ahead in the spending spree and have shelled out £269 million so far in the current transfer window. That isn't surprising after they signed German international Florian Wirtz for a staggering £116 million and France forward Hugo Ekitike for £69 million, which could rise to £79 million, as per the report. They have also spent £40.8 million on Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez and £35 million on Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong. Fresh from the Club World Cup title, Chelsea — who finished fourth in the league last season — have spent £212 million so far. Their biggest spending has been on forward Joao Pedro, who was signed for £60 million from Brighton, and Jamie Gittens, the Borussia Dortmund left-winger, for £56 million. After finishing second in each of the last three seasons, Arsenal have shored up their attack with the signing of striker Victor Gyokeres for £63.5 million. Their other major buys have been Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £60 million and former Chelsea winger Noni Madueke for £48.5 million. Ruben Amorim, meanwhile, is leaving no stone unturned after Manchester United suffered their worst campaign in the Premier League era last season and have spent more than City. United have splurged £133.5 million so far, of which £65 million was spent on Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Brazilian Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million. Manchester City, meanwhile, have spent about £127 million. Most of it has been on Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki.

New Delhi, July 25 (UNI) India's 70 kg boxer Hitesh Gulia who won the Gold and Silver medal respectively at the World Boxing Cup Brazil 2025 and World Boxing Cup -Astana, Kazakhstan 2025, says he is working on increasing his speed and sharpening his attacking abilities in order to further improve his game. In an exclusive interview to UNI on the sidelines of the felicitation function held for the Indian boxing contingent that participated in the two events, Gulia said: "My footwork is quite good. I am working further on my attack and on increasing my speed." Gulia characterises his boxing style as slow-paced and tactical. "I like to assess the opponent during bouts and mould my game accordingly. Every opponent is different; hence one needs to be flexible." The 20-year-old said that the two tournaments were of very high quality, and added that his match against Brazil's Kaian Oliveira was the toughest he has played so far. Gulia lost 0-5 to Oliveira in the Gold medal match in Astana. 'All matches in Brazil and Astana were tough, but the final match against the Brazilian in Astana was the toughest game I have ever played.' The Jhajjar native said that he will now be preparing for the 'World Boxing Championships 2025' that will be held in Liverpool, England, from September 4-14. "I will now be preparing for the upcoming World Championships that will be played in September. I will be leaving for the camp in NIS (National Institute of Sports) Patiala."
