Ex-Bayern Munich Defender Rafinha Calls Time On Career

Former Brazil international defender Rafinha has announced his retirement from professional football, ending a career that spanned more than 20 years. The 39-year-old had been undecided about his future since leaving Brazilian Serie B side Coritiba in March. "Today I officially announce the end of my career as a professional soccer player," Rafinha told Sportv. "It's been a wonderful journey and I didn't expect to get to where I am today. "It's with a heavy heart that I'm ending something that I've done my whole life. But everything has a beginning and an end, and I have no regrets. I achieved everything that I wanted to in football," he said. Rafinha began his career at Coritiba in 2002 before moving to Germany's Schalke in 2005 till 2010. The right-back later played for Genoa (2010 - 2011), Bayern Munich and Flamengo, among others, before returning to Coritiba in December last year. He was capped four times for Brazil. The Brazilian right-back made a total of 266 competitive appearances for Bayern. He lifted seven Bundesliga titles, four DFB Cups and was an integral part of the 2013 treble-winning team. Rafinha's club Sao Paulo paid tribute to their departing captain, recognising the significance of his contributions both in terms of silverware and his leadership. "Our captain in the conquests of the 2023 Copa do Brasil and the 2024 Supercopa Rei, Marcio Rafael Ferreira de Souza announced his retirement from the pitch on this 21st of July, 2025. "A Sao Paulo fan at heart, Rafinha fulfilled his dream of defending the Tricolor from 2022 to 2024, honouring our jersey in 117 matches. Congratulations on your beautiful journey in football and much success in your next challenges!"

Brazilian Rafinha wins La Liga player of year award

Madrid – Saba: La Liga announced on Friday that Brazilian Rafinha, a Barcelona player, won the La Liga Player of the Year Award for the 2024-25 season, after leading the Blaugrana to their 28th league title. Rafinha beat out teammates Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Robert Lewandowski in the final vote, as well as Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Isco (Real Betis), and Oyhan Sancet (Athletic Bilbao). The Catalan club had a fantastic season, and Rafinha played a key role in German coach Hansi Flick's team's success in reclaiming the league title from arch-rivals Real Madrid. He contributed 27 goals, scoring 18 and providing nine assists. The 28-year-old, who joined Barcelona in the 2022 season from Leeds United, finished sixth in the competition's top scorer list, which was edged out by Frenchman Kylian Mbappé with 31 goals. Barcelona, who won the domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup, dominated the league's awards, with Hansi Flick winning the Best Coach award and Lamine Yamal winning the Best Young Player award earlier this month. Barcelona Renews Rafinha's Contract Until 2028

Follow-up - INA La Liga champions Barcelona announced the renewal of Brazilian striker Rafinha's contract until 2028. Rafinha joins coach Hansi Flick, who will remain with him until 2027. Barcelona wrote on its X account, along with a photo of Rafinha: "Follow your dream... We grow together." Rafinha has scored 54 goals and provided 50 assists in 143 appearances for Barcelona since joining from Leeds United in 2022. The 28-year-old player was close to leaving Barcelona last summer, but the signing of Flick turned things around. Rafinha played a key role in Barcelona's league title win this season, as well as the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup. Rafinha equaled Cristiano Ronaldo's record after contributing 21 goals for Barcelona in the Champions League this season, scoring 13 and assisting eight. Rafinha previously won the league title with Barcelona in 2023 and the Spanish Super Cup in the same year.
