KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's financial sector must remain a cornerstone of transformation as Malaysia enters the next chapter of the country's development agenda under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan today. He said the sector must remain adaptive, competitive and inclusive, while safeguarding trust, integrity, and resilience at its core. Amir Hamzah said Malaysia's financial sector has made commendable strides over the decades, and has strengthened its foundations, broadened access, and embraced digital transformation under the Financial Sector Blueprint 2022– 2026. 'The sector now contributes meaningfully not only to gross domestic product, but to national development outcomes -- from small and medium enterprises financing and Islamic finance leadership to digital payments and social protection mechanisms. Yet progress must continue. 'Under 13MP, the financial sector is identified and recognised as one of seventeen high-growth, high value and high impact strategic sectors that will support enhanced economic diversity,' he said in a special address at the MyFintech Week 2025 here today. Amir Hamzah said the financial system must evolve as a catalyst for the country's transition to a value-creation-based economy by fostering a culture of innovation. Turning the aspirations of 13MP into reality would require unwavering commitment, innovative policies, and close cooperation across all sectors of society, he added. 'I call upon financial institutions to lead by example. As the first sector to develop and adopt the Future Skills Framework, it is essential to continue investing in people – promoting cross-functional mobility, diverse teams, and communities of practice to build a learning and adaptive financial system,' he added. Amir Hamzah outlined four strategic imperatives that will guide the way forward, namely F-I-N-D, which stand for 'Foster, Invest, Nurture, and Democratise'. Moving forward, he said Malaysia must continue to scale solutions that blend digital innovation with community engagement, particularly for informal workers, gig economy participants, and microenterprises. 'Financial literacy must also be prioritised, particularly among youth, women, and rural communities. These efforts are essential to strengthening our social safety net and building lasting financial resilience,' he said. Malaysia and ASEAN drive peace talks as Myanmar crisis improves
KUALA LUMPUR: The humanitarian crisis in Myanmar has seen notable improvements compared to previous conditions, thanks to ongoing efforts and support from ASEAN, with Malaysia playing an active role in facilitating peace negotiations, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that Myanmar remains willing to continue cooperation and discussions with Malaysia under the ASEAN framework, opening the door for progress on key issues in the country. 'We have initiated talks, and as I mentioned in Parliament, I have personally met with both the current Prime Minister and the Prime Minister of the National Unity Government to reach some agreements. 'First, a ceasefire; second, to enable humanitarian aid access; and third, to continue dialogue aimed at stopping attacks, especially those affecting Karen, Rakhine, and Rohingya areas. 'So far, the situation is far better compared to previous developments,' he said in reply to Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) during Minister's Question Time, regarding Malaysia's role in Myanmar's humanitarian conflict. Meanwhile, in reply to Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) on aid efforts in Myanmar, Anwar said humanitarian operations have been ramped up with the establishment of a military field hospital in Myanmar, operating for several months with consent from both sides. 'The military field hospital has been operational for months, with the condition that no new attacks occur and that a ceasefire is maintained. 'This initiative also aims to protect the long-oppressed Rohingya community. For the first time in months, they have felt some relief without severe attacks, although some isolated incidents have been reported,' he explained. The Prime Minister added that diplomatic negotiations will continue, with several ASEAN foreign ministers, including those from Thailand and Indonesia, expected to visit Myanmar at the end of this month as part of a coordinated effort to find a sustainable solution. Regarding conflicts in southern Thailand and the Philippines, Anwar said that discussions have reached the highest level among leaders of the involved countries, but both sides have yet to agree on using an ASEAN framework for resolution. 'Both the Prime Minister of Thailand and the President of the Philippines have agreed that Malaysia should monitor developments, not interfere, but help facilitate solutions to the ongoing tensions and incidents in southern Thailand and southern Philippines,' he said. - Bernama

CSOs march to Parliament, demand forest governance reforms under 13MP
A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) has urged the government to embed key forest governance reforms in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), warning that failure to do so could cost the country access to billions in international climate finance. Led by Greenpeace International, around 20 individuals marched from Taman Tugu to Parliament this morning, where they submitted a five-point memorandum titled 'March for the Forest: Securing Climate Finance in the 13MP'.
