KP honours 140 young innovators
The ceremony was organized under the auspices by the Directorate General of Science and Technology (DGST). The event marked a milestone in the province's journey toward fostering a dynamic research culture. Senior government officials, university representatives, researchers, and aspiring scientists participated in the event.
Dr Shafqat Ayaz, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on ST&IT participated as Chief Guest, who also presented the awards to the recipients. Among the distinguished guests were Secretary for Science, Technology and IT (ST\&IT), Amjad Ali Khan, Director General DGST, Sajjid Shah and MD IT Board.
A total of 54 awards were distributed under two of DGST's flagship programmes: the Undergraduate Research Support (UGRS) Programme and the Masters Interdisciplinary Research Programme.
Through these initiatives, financial support was extended to students from more than 30 universities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, underscoring the province's growing commitment to academic research and applied innovation.
Under the UGRS Programme, 80 final-year undergraduate research projects received grants of PKR 150,000 each. The initiative is aimed at encouraging bachelor level students to explore practical locally relevant research topic and bring new idea.
In the scheme 60 postgraduate students were awarded PKR 600,000 each under the Masters Interdisciplinary Research Program to conduct high-impact, interdisciplinary research.
The Master's programme aligns closely with the province's 11 Strategic Thrust Areas - eight resource-based sectors (such as gemstones, fruits and vegetables, honey production, herbs and medicinal plants, fisheries, the urban environment, micro-hydro energy, and archaeology) and three high-tech 'moonshot' domains: Advanced Materials, Biomedicine, and Space Sciences.
Each selected scholar is expected to make a novel scientific contribution during their one-year project.
Cheif guest of the ceremony, Dr Shafqat Ayaz in his address applauded the students and the DGST team for their efforts in laying the foundation for a robust research ecosystem. 'We are witnessing the rise of a research culture in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,' he remarked.
'These young minds are not just scholars; they are builders of a better, tech-driven future for our people.' SACM further added that we have to utilise scientific research in health sciences also in the province for the facilitation of every patient, empowering youth is the vision of Chairman PTI Imran Khan In his address Secretary ST&IT, Amjad Ali Khan emphasized innovation as a core pillar of development and said, 'In today's world, nations that lead in science and technology stand as sovereign and self-reliant.'
Addressing the gathering, DG Sajjid Shah emphasized the importance of the award ceremony and said, 'These awards reflect our belief that science and technology are not just national priorities, but provincial imperatives. By funding young researchers, we are planting seeds of knowledge, self-reliance, and innovation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.'

Karachi hackathon showcases real-world solutions powered by generative AI
Listen to article The Build with AI Mini Hackathon, hosted at Folio3 on May 31, 2025, brought together over 120 participants — a mix of professionals, students, and tech enthusiasts — for a high-energy, four-hour innovation sprint centered on Generative AI. Organized by GDG Kolachi in collaboration with Folio3, the event showcased how AI can address pressing real-world challenges. The day opened with two impactful sessions that set the tone: 'Vibe Coding' by Muhammad Aashir and Hassan Mujtaba, which ignited the room with creativity and curiosity, and 'Vertical AI Agents' by Jaya Rajwani, Technology Lead at iENGINEERING, who explored the rise of domain-specific AI agents in transforming digital ecosystems. Working under tight constraints, 25 teams prototyped solutions powered by Gemini, Google's latest generative AI technology. Projects spanned diverse domains, including vehicle detection, FIR automation, import-export document intelligence, AI bidding systems, urban sanitation monitoring, and public transport tracking — all within just four hours. Participants were guided by an incredible team of mentors, including Raheel Siddiqui (Mozaik), Zain Ahmed (Neem), Farah Mehboob (Valider), Umar Shaikh (EY), Huzaifa Shahbaz (Swift Dynamics), Muhammad Taha (Consultant), Saleha Shujaat (Software Engineer), Ramsha Zaheer (Propellus), Eman Ahmed (Technical Consultant), Talha Ashraf (Polymath), Rashid Wassan (DevOps Engineer), and Arbab Siddiqui (Folio3). Their real-time feedback and support elevated team ideas from concept to MVP, making the mentorship experience a highlight of the event. The hackathon concluded with three winning teams, each receiving a PKR 25,000 cash prize. The judging panel — comprised of industry leaders Aaqib Sayed (DigitalOcean), Yunus Jamal (Atompoint), and Talha Ashraf (Polymath) — evaluated submissions based on innovation, relevance, and technical execution. The event was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of community, creativity, and the potential of AI. Starlink likely to start by June, NA panel told
ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT) and Telecom was informed on Tuesday that the process to initiate Starlink internet services in Pakistan was almost complete and the service would be available in the country by June this year. The committee which met here with its chairman Aminul Haq in the chair, expressed its displeasure with the problems in the availability of internet services in parts of the country. The committee members hoped that after the start of the Starlink those issued could be resolved. The parliamentary secretary for IT told the committee that the discussions with Starlink had reached the final stage and its services would be available by June this year. The secretary said that 90% process had been completed. Therefore, the licence to the Starlink would be issued soon. During the meeting, the committee discussed the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) projects for the IT ministry for the financial year 2024-25. The ministry said that Rs24 billion was allocated in the PSDP, adding that more than Rs2 billion had, so far, been spent in the current fiscal year. The committee members raised the problems pertaining to the internet availability in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Special Communication Organisation (SCO) officials said that a plan was in hand to expand mobile services in the regions at a cost of Rs780 million. Regarding the establishment of an IT park in Karachi, the IT ministry officials stated said that Rs6 billion was allocated for the project this year, but the amount could not be utilised because it was still in the design phase. Committee member Mustafa Kamal urged effective planning for the project. Another committee member, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, pointed to the non-completion of the Islamabad IT park project for a long time. The ministry officials said that a Korean company was working on the project. The chair said that the committee would visit the project after the next meeting. The chair asked the ministry to expedite the work on the Personal Data Protection Bill. The IT ministry secretary told the committee that the minister concerned was on board on the bill. The committee was informed that a draft of the artificial intelligence (AI) policy had been sent to the cabinet for approval. During the meeting, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman briefed the committee regarding internet speed and connectivity. He said that the PTA generated Rs1,700 billion revenue in the last 6 years the government had not invested even a single rupee in this sector in several years. He informed the committee that high-speed internet connectivity required fibre cables.
