Dog owners start missing their pets less than an hour into a trip, survey shows

New York Posta day ago
Forget sightseeing and exploring new places: Two in five dog owners said the best part of a trip is coming home — to see their pup.
That's according to a new survey of 2,000 dog owners, which revealed 42% said coming home to their dog can be the part of their trip they enjoy the most.
Forty percent of respondents 'constantly' worry whether their dog is okay when they're traveling — and a fifth (22%) miss their dog so much while traveling that it can impact their enjoyment of the trip.
Conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by K9 Resorts, the results highlighted Americans' love for their furry companions and the immense worry that comes from being away from their pets.

It only takes 53 minutes for the average respondent to start missing their pup when they have to leave their dog. But for some, this kicks in even sooner, with 24% of respondents admitting they start thinking about their dog as soon as they walk out the door.
When traveling, the average respondent estimated their vacation distracts them for just an hour and a half at a time before 'pet parent guilt' strikes hardest. From there, pet owners miss their pups an average of 13 distinct times per day when away.
This highlights the importance of owners ensuring their dogs are well cared for when they're away, to help make this worry more manageable.

In fact, three-quarters of dog owners surveyed (76%) said their summer travel plans primarily depend on finding proper care for their dog.
Finding the right care is crucial for pet parents, as 32% worry no one else will fully understand what their dog needs — and the same percentage was concerned their dog won't get enough walks, stimulation or playtime in their absence.
A similar percentage also expressed worry that their dog won't get the love they deserve if they aren't around (34%).
This worry has led to a fifth (19%) asking their pet sitter to put their dog on the phone so they can speak to their pup — while 17% have done the same with a video call.
'Dogs are true family members, and we understand the anxiety pet owners feel when they are traveling and can't bring their pups with them,' said Steven Parker, co-CEO and co-founder of K9 Resorts Luxury Pet Hotel and Daycare.
'Our expert staff of dog lovers goes above and beyond to make sure your best friend is treated like family. Our clients know they can rest assured their dogs are enjoying a fabulous staycation while they're away.'
More than half of those surveyed wish they could explain to their dog why they can't come and reassure them that they'll be back (52%).
The survey looked at just how pet parents build this level of understanding and communicate with their furry friends, finding that 84% claim they can read their pet's expressions, and a similar percentage can differentiate their needs by the slightest change in whines or barks (86%).
Pet parents have such a good read on their pet that one in five claim they 'always' know what their dog is going to do before they do it.
Despite knowing their pet's personality, the average respondent worries about whether they're meeting their dog's needs three times a week. Twice the number of dog owners surveyed worry about their dog's needs more than their own (40% vs. 19%).

Respondents are particularly keen on making sure their dog gets enough exercise (44%), that their overall health is good (43%), and ensuring they get enough affection (37%).
However, fewer pet parents recognize the importance of ensuring that their dog has enough socialization (29%) and mental stimulation (28%).
'Pet parents naturally think of nutritious meals and exercise as essential components of their dog's well-being, but being properly socialized and receiving mental stimulation is just as important,' said Parker. 'If they aren't already, I recommend to dog parents that they identify ways to incorporate these elements into their dogs' daily routines — whether that's through boarding and daycare, trips to the dog park, or play dates.'

Americans Are Moving to This Small Southern Suburb in 2025 for Its Affordability and Wide-open Spaces

Americans are on the move, and they are searching for affordability, space, and a better work-life balance. Relocation company MoveBuddha has released its latest 2025 Moving Trends Report, which analyzed over 55,000 searches on its website to determine where people are planning to move this year so far. The most popular domestic destination for relocation in the first six months of 2025 is Conway, South Carolina, with four times as many people seeking to move in compared to those wanting to move out. The city surpasses its neighbor, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which topped the list in the first quarter of the year. Conway, home to 28,000 full-time residents, offers the appeal of a vibrant community without the high housing costs and congestion associated with larger cities. South Carolina is the most popular state to move to so far, accounting for the highest volume of inbound searches—or over 22 percent. The Southeast has a strong showing in the top ten, with North Carolina and Tennessee seeing spikes in inbound demand. 'There's been some broadening in migration interest, with lesser-known and previously overlooked destinations gaining ground as formerly popular locations reach saturation and cost limits,' the report stated. 'This year, smaller locations are becoming more popular, with huge demand and few residents calling it quits. That means movers are very interested in just a handful of popular locales, and cities that haven't grown in popularity this year, even if they're maintaining strong migration interest, are falling behind.' At the other end of the spectrum, New Jersey, California, and New York have seen many more inquiries for outbound moves, meaning those states stand to lose residents rather than gain. 'These states, in addition to being densely populated, face affordability challenges in an America struggling with persistent inflation and pay that hasn't kept up,' MoveBuddha noted. The communities of West Des Moines, Iowa, as well as El Cajon and Palmdale, both in California, are the top "exit cities," as the company called them. U.S. Passport Drops 2 Places To No. 10 In World's Most Powerful List

Topline The United States blue book continues its decade-long slide to the 10th spot on the Henley Passport Index, a ranking of the world's passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The U.S. blue book is tied for No. 10 in a new ranking of the world's most powerful passports—a ... More continuation of its slide from No. 1 in 2014. getty Key Facts Americans can travel visa-free to 182 countries around the world—four fewer than one year ago, when the U.S. was ranked No. 8. In January 2025, the U.S. dropped one spot to No. 9. Americans can access 11 fewer countries visa-free than holders of the No. 1 passport, Singapore. A decade ago, in 2014, the U.S. jointly held the No. 1 position with the United Kingdom, which has slid to No. 6 in the 2025 ranking. 'Notably, the U.S. is now on the brink of exiting the Top 10 altogether for the first time in the index's 20-year history,' Henley & Partners noted in a statement. What Makes One Passport More Powerful Than Another? Since 2006, Henley & Partners has monitored which of the world's passports deliver the most and least global mobility, based on exclusive data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Global mobility is a key measure of soft power for a nation's citizens when they go abroad. Citizens of Singapore—the No. 1 passport in the ranking—enjoy access to 193 travel destinations out of 227 around the world visa-free. The second most powerful passports in the world are Japan and South Korea, which each provides access to 190 destinations without a visa. A U.S. passport gives holders access to 182 destinations visa-free—putting the blue book on equal standing with Iceland and Lithuania. 'Your passport is no longer just a travel document—it's a reflection of your country's diplomatic influence and international relationships,' Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners said in a statement. Why Has The U.s. Passport Fallen In The Power Rankings? The United States is held back by its lack of reciprocity, according to how Henley & Partners calculates its ranking. While American passport holders can access 182 out of 227 destinations visa-free, the U.S. itself allows only 46 other nationalities to pass through its borders visa-free, putting it way down the Henley Openness Index in 80th place (compared to 10th place on the Henley Passport Index), barely outpacing Iraq. Which Passports Have Made The Biggest Power Gains So Far In 2025? Two Asian countries are the ranking's biggest movers and shakers since January. India jumped eight spots in six months, from No. 85 to No. 77, after adding two destinations and bringing its visa-free tally to 59. Over the same period, Saudi Arabia's citizens gained visa-free access to four countries, bringing its total to 91 countries, which lifts the kingdom four places to No. 54. Which Passports Have Gained The Most Power Over The Past Decade? Taking a longer view, two other Asian countries stand out as winners in the ranking since 2015. The United Arab Emirates shot up 34 places over the last 10 years from No. 42 to No. 8. Another notable climber is China, also rising 34 places from No. 94 to No. 60 since 2015, which Henley & Partners characterizes as 'particularly impressive considering that, unlike other top risers, China has not yet gained visa-free access to Europe's Schengen Area.' The report attributes China's rise to its significant move towards greater openness, with the country granting visa-free access to over a dozen new passports since January. In 2025, passport holders from 75 nations have visa-free entry to China, a remarkable shift from fewer than 20 countries just five years ago. Here Are The Top 10 Most Powerful Passports As ranked by the Henley Passport Index (countries accessible visa-free): Singapore (193) Japan, South Korea (190) Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Span (189) Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden (188) Greece, New Zealand, Switzerland (187) United Kingdom (186) Australia, Czechia, Hungary, Malta, Poland (185) Canada, Estonia, U.A.E. (184) Croatia, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia (183) Iceland, Lithuania, U.S. (182) Crucial Quote 'Americans are now leading the demand worldwide for alternative residence and citizenship options'… as the U.S. adopts 'increasingly inward-looking policies,' Steffen noted in a statement. It's official: 2031 Ryder Cup returning to Spain, to be held at Camiral near Barcelona

Many have wondered when the Ryder Cup would return to Spain after a thrilling match at Valderrama in 1997. We now have the official answer. It was officially announced on Tuesday that the 2031 Ryder Cup will be contested at Camiral in Costa Brava, outside of Barcelona. Spain will become the first country in continental Europe to host more than one Ryder Cup. Golfweek had previously reported (via other sources) that this would likely be the venue. Legendary Spaniard Seve Ballesteros captained the European squad to a 141⁄2 to 131⁄2 victory at Valderrama, with the Americans falling one point short of a comeback in Sunday Singles after trailing by five points coming into the final day. 'Today's announcement not only recognises Camiral as one of Europe's leading venues, but also the considerable contribution Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup," Guy Kinnings, Chief Executive of the European Tour Group, said in a release. 'The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since Spain last hosted it in 1997. It is one of the world's leading sporting events, which brings significant economic benefits and global exposure to a host region and country, so we could not be happier to be taking it to Costa Brava and Barcelona for the first time, and to Spain for the second time." Camiral, formerly known as PGA Catalunya, is ranked as Spain's top golf and wellness resort. It opened in 1999 and has hosted the DP World Tour's Open de España on three occasions, in 2000, 2009 and 2014, and the Catalunya Championship in 2022, as well as the Final Stage of the DP World Tour's Qualifying School for nine consecutive years from 2008-16. Future Ryder Cup venues 2025: Bethpage Black 2027: Adare Manor 2029: Hazeltine National 2031: Camiral 2033: Olympic Club
