Mid East Info09-05-2025
In a landmark moment marking 25 years of environmental advocacy and youth empowerment, the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) proudly concluded the 25th Cycle of one of its most impactful educational programmes targeting the intermediate and secondary school students; known as the 'Inter-School Environmental Public Speaking Competition'. It is a flagship national initiative that continues to serve as a dynamic platform for nurturing the voices and visions of tomorrow's environmental leaders. Held from 5th to 8th May 2025 at the Taaleem Centre in Al Barsha, this milestone edition brought together 702 students from 117 schools across the UAE in a celebration of knowledge, innovation and civic responsibility.
The Silver Jubilee of this esteemed competition is a testament to EEG's unwavering dedication to integrating environmental education into the heart of academic and youth development. It stands as the longest-running and most impactful educational outreach programme in the UAE, designed to elevate environmental literacy while empowering students to become agents of change. Through the power of dialogue, public speaking, critical thinking and research, this programme offers students aged 13 to 18 the opportunity to engage in solution-oriented discussions on some of the world's most pressing environmental and sustainability issues.
In her stirring opening address, Mrs. Habiba Al Mar'ashi, the Co-Founder and Chairperson of EEG, reflected on the legacy of this initiative and the incredible journey it has taken over the last two and a half decades. 'What began as a modest initiative has evolved into a national movement that is empowering the youth with the tools, knowledge and confidence to confront environmental challenges of our time. The competition is about inspiring ownership, responsibility and vision amongst the youth. It is about shaping the leaders who will build the sustainable future we all aspire to,' she stated.
She further added: 'This year's cycle was held under the spirit of the 'Year of Community', declared by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE highlighting the importance of collective engagement and social cohesion. It is through platforms like these that we strengthen the social fabric of our nation and ignite a sense of purpose amongst the youth—motivating them to take action, not just in classrooms, but in their homes, communities and future careers'.
The programme goes beyond its immediate educational value—it is a powerful contributor to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). This year's topics and themes were aligned with Goal #3: Good Health and Well-Being, Goal #4: Quality Education, Goal #7: Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal #9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal #11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal #12: Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal #13: Climate Action, Goal #14: Life Below Water, Goal #15: Life on Land and Goal #17: Partnerships for the Goals.
The integration of these global goals into the competition ensures that students are educated on environmental matters and are equipped with a systems-thinking approach that views sustainability as a holistic and interconnected priority.
The true legacy of the Inter-School Environmental Public Speaking Competition lies in its transformational, long-term impact on students and the wider society. Over its 25-year journey, the competition has influenced thousands of young minds, fostering a deep-rooted sense of environmental responsibility and stewardship as well as ownership and leadership.
This initiative sows the seeds of a more sustainable future by encouraging students to view environmental issues through the lens of social justice, health, innovation and equity. It nurtures ethical leadership and a sense of purpose, enabling youth to become proactive contributors to society and advocates for a healthier planet. The competition has become a cornerstone in the development of an engaged and environmentally literate generation—one that sees action as a choice and as a responsibility. This is the type of long-term impact that transforms not just individuals, but the communities and systems in which they live.
Throughout the four-day programme, students captivated a distinguished panel of bilingual judges with well-researched presentations, original perspectives and solution-driven proposals. The judging panel, comprising experts in environmental science, education and sustainable development, offered valuable feedback and insights, creating a nurturing yet intellectually rigorous environment.
EEG proudly acknowledges the steadfast support of its partners who made this milestone event possible. The Ministry of Education generously hosted the competition, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to embedding sustainability into national education. Longstanding supporters such as McDonald's UAE and Abela & Co. played an essential role in the successful execution of the event, showcasing the power of cross sector partnerships in advancing the sustainability agenda.
The event concluded on a celebratory note with an exciting awards ceremony. After a highly competitive and inspiring four days, Global Indian International School, Dubai, under the topic: Urbanisation vs. Wellbeing: The Role of Sustainable Cities in Public Health, emerged as the Champion of the 25th Cycle, succeeding the 2024 titleholder, Delhi Private School Dubai. EEG extends heartfelt congratulations to all the students, teachers and schools for their tireless efforts and meaningful contributions.
As EEG reflects on this Silver Jubilee edition, one thing is abundantly clear: the investment in youth is the most profitable one, it is also a powerful catalyst for lasting environmental and societal change. This competition is definitely a legacy of EEG as it leaves a very tangible mark on the educational scape of the country. It is also a living, evolving platform that will continue to shape the narrative of sustainability in the UAE and beyond.

Cabinet Media Center: Bus Rapid Transit represents significant shift in smart transportation solutions

CAIRO, June 23 (MENA) - The Cabinet's Media Center said Monday the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project represents a paradigm shift in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), reflecting integration of advanced mobility solutions that enhance efficiency, safety and environmental sustainability in public transport. It also reaffirmed the State's commitment to providing safe, integrated public transit that enhances mobility for citizens, particularly in view of the significant progress achieved in Egypt's transport sector in recent years. Director of the BRT Project at the Transport Ministry Mahmoud el-Sheikh said in a video published by the Cabinet's Media Center on its social media platforms that the project represents one of the sustainable public transport systems being implemented for the first time in Egypt. Its route has been designed to extend over 113 kilometers, covering all major areas and intersections along the Ring Road, said the project's director. It aims to streamline passenger movement along the Ring Road in a modern and efficient manner, enabling the transport of the largest possible number of passengers in the shortest time, he added. He also said the project is being implemented over three phases, with the trial operation of the first phase already underway, extending from the Ring Road's intersection with the Alexandria Agricultural Road to the Police Academy station in New Cairo. This phase serves densely populated areas and major junctions, including the Alexandria Agricultural Road, the Suez Road and the Ismailia Desert Road - thereby providing an efficient transport service to Greater Cairo commuters arriving from various governorates, according to the project director, the project's director said. He explained that the station selection was based on criteria designed to ensure the project's integration with existing public transport networks, including Cairo Metro Line 2 at Shubra El-Kheima, Line 1 at El-Marg and Adly Mansour central interchange station. This contributes to improving the overall efficiency of the transport network and expanding service coverage to broader segments of the population, he added. Several citizens praised the project, affirming that it represents a qualitative leap in public transport services by offering comfortable travel, reduced waiting times, punctual operations and a high level of service quality. They also expressed satisfaction with the onboard safety standards and the affordability of ticket prices across various passenger segments, factors that promote greater reliance on this modern mode of transport as a practical and convenient alternative to traditional systems. Dubai Airports fulfils a son's wish with commemorative passport stamp for his father - Middle East Business News and Information

A gesture of gratitude honours 60 years of community and belonging Dubai, United Arab Emirates, June 2025: In a heartwarming gesture that reflects the spirit of the UAE's Year of Community, Dubai Airports helped make a son's simple wish for his father come true by securing something that he never had – an official airport-entry stamp into Dubai. Haji N Jamaluddin first arrived in Dubai from Mumbai by ship on 26 February 1965. He still remembers the moment clearly. There was no port at the time, and the city was just beginning to take shape. Six decades later, his son wanted to mark the occasion by giving his father a new Dubai entry stamp, symbolising not just a physical arrival, but a lifetime of dedication to a place that became home. With support from the team at Dubai Airports, that thoughtful idea was turned into action. 'This new entry stamp isn't just a mark in a passport – it's a tribute to everything Dubai has given us,' said Jamaluddin. 'My son wanted to honour the years I've spent here and with the help of the Dubai Airports team, he made that possible.' A respected educator, chairman and founder of Crescent English High School, Jamaluddin has shaped thousands of lives since opening the school in 1984. With more than 1,700 students enrolled today, it remains one of the most affordable private schools in the UAE. His philosophy is simple: 'Money is not everything. Education is the best weapon for enlightenment.' A proud contributor to Dubai's social fabric, Jamaluddin credits much of his passion to the leadership of the UAE, especially the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, whom he saw regularly visiting worksites in the early morning hours. 'He was always among the people and now His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is continuing that legacy. It's what makes Dubai what it is today.' Students from Crescent English High School were also invited to Dubai International (DXB) for an educational tour. The visit offered them a unique behind-the-scenes look at DXB's operations and the opportunity to learn about the vital role the airport plays in connecting communities across the world.

Under the directives of Hamdan bin Zayed, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi records 97.4% Sustainable Fisheries Index, reaffirming Abu Dhabi's leadership in sustainable fisheries management

Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), aimed at conserving, protecting, and enhancing fisheries resources, the emirate has recorded significant achievements, for the sixth consecutive year, in its marine monitoring and conservation efforts to mark World Oceans Day. EAD has achieved an increase in the Sustainable Fisheries Index, reaching 97.4 per cent by the end of 2024, up from just 8.9 per cent in 2018. This performance reaffirms Abu Dhabi's leadership in sustainable fisheries management. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan said: 'This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment and the diligent efforts of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi to safeguard our natural wealth and optimise sustainable marine resource stewardship. It reinforces Abu Dhabi's ambitious vision to strike a harmonious balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability, serving as a global model for confronting environmental challenges for a prosperous and resilient future.' Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said: 'The significant progress recorded in the Sustainable Fisheries Index underscores Abu Dhabi's leadership in environmental conservation. We are committed to deploying best-in-class management practices and leveraging scientific capabilities to restore fish populations and protect marine ecosystems. This success affirms the importance of evidence-based policy and global best practices in conserving our natural heritage for future generations.' EAD's recent monitoring efforts also yielded notable findings that further validate the success of its marine sustainability agenda. These include the landing of 55 nuaimi fish– a species rarely sighted in recent years – as well as the first recorded presence of the white-spotted grouper in Abu Dhabi, now officially registered on the international Fish Base database. Additional sightings include rare species such as the large-scaled triggerfish and the spotted oceanic triggerfish, as well as the general presence of larger fish, indicating healthier marine ecosystems. EAD has implemented a comprehensive series of internationally aligned policies for fish stock recovery. These measures include regulating commercial fishing activities through sustainable methods, as well as implementing new regulations for recreational fishing. The Agency has also established 6 marine reserves within the Sheikh Zayed Protected Areas Network where fishing is regulated, enhanced sustainable aquaculture and fish stocks through coral culture and artificial reefs as part of the Abu Dhabi Coral Gardens initiative.
