Messerly's relief effort sees Morgantown through to Class AAAA state title game with 7-5 semifinal victory over George Washington

Dominion Post07-06-2025

CHARLESTON – The Morgantown High School baseball team earned its spot in the Class AAAA state championship game with a gritty 7-5 victory in the semifinals of the 2025 WVSSAC state baseball tournament on Friday night at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston.
Senior relief pitcher Judd Messerly entered the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and a 6-5 lead as the Patriots had scored five runs in the frame.
Messerly finished the game on the bump for the Mohigans, allowing only one hit in 3.1 innings with two walks and two strikeouts in 45 pitches.
His effort, combined with a five-run second inning, propelled the Mohigans into the Class AAAA state championship game to battle top-seeded Hurricane Saturday night. The Redskins defeated Hedgesville 5-3 in the other AAAA semifinal.
'We came into a tough environment tonight against a very talented team and showed a high level of maturity to pull that win out,' MHS head coach Pat Sherald said. 'I can't tell you how proud I am of their effort tonight. Our mission was to come down here, compete, have fun, and give ourselves a chance to win a championship. They've answered that call, so now it's time to go back and rest up and come out prepared to face another very talented team.'
Offensively, senior Vinnie Aloi was the difference for MHS as he drove in four runs in the contest, including a bases-clearing double that capped a five-run second inning. His sacrifice fly in the first inning opened the scoring.
Sammy Watson reached on an infield single, followed by a walk to Kai Henkins. After two strikeouts, a pitch hit Bowers to load the bases, and a walk to Koa Silvers forced in a run, doubling the lead. Just three pitches later, Jackson Bredeson was also hit by a pitch, bringing in another run.
With the bases still loaded, Aloi stepped up and delivered a massive blow with his double off the left field wall that cleared the bases and brought all three runners home, extending the lead to 6-0.
George Washington punched back in the fourth with a five-run inning of its own, including a three-run double by Corbin Dixon off the left field wall.
Messerly then entered the game for MHS and stopped the bleeding, making way for his offense to add an insurance run in the top half of the sixth.
'I literally told them 'thank you' after that happened,' Messerly said. 'That was such a huge run and helped me settle down in that seventh inning when my nerves started to set in. My heart started beating pretty fast in that last inning.'
Sherald says Messerly has earned the nickname 'The Fireman'.
'When everything's burning down around, we call on him to come in and put out the fire for us, and that's exactly what he did,' Sherald said. He competed for us. We've put him in every high-leverage situation that we've had this season, and he's gone out and just competed for us.'
Morgantown and Hurricane will battle for the Class AAAA state championship in the nightcap of Championship Saturday, with first pitch being scheduled for 50 minutes after the conclusion of the Class AAA championship, slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Lexi Thompson, Megan Khang come up short at Dow as South Korean duo wins first LPGA title

With no range on property at the Dow Championship to keep loose, Lexi Thompson did what she's known for on the LPGA – signed autographs. After draining a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-3 18th to give Team Biggie Smalls the clubhouse lead, Thompson and partner Megan Khang waited to see whether their 20-under total would hold up at Midland Country Club. As it turned out, South Korea's Jin Hee Im and Somi Lee had something to say about it. A birdie on the 17th from Lee brought them to the 18th tee in a tie with the Solheim Cup duo. As Thompson looked for her first title since 2019 and Khang for the first time since 2023, the relative newcomers, Im and Lee, were each searching for breakthrough wins. Advertisement Thompson and Khang watched from the clubhouse as Lee and Im – dressed in white – faced two chances to win it outright in the four-ball format. After Im's birdie attempt grazed the right edge of the cup, Lee pushed hers even more and they prepared for overtime. The foursome returned to the 18th tee for the playoff, but the format switched to foursomes (alternate shot). Thompson stepped up with her wedge from 144 yards and stuffed it to 5 feet. Lee followed, hitting hers past the hole about 9 feet. After looking shaky on the greens down the stretch, Im drained the putt for birdie to putt pressure on Khang. The must-make putt slid by the left edge. Advertisement "If I had it alone I can't make it," said Im. "I think we're best team ever." Lee and Im become the 50th and 51st South Koreans to win on the LPGA, respectively, and the first team to each make the Dow their first victory. The each earned $399,510 for their efforts. As for Thompson and Khang, this marked their first time playing the Dow together after successfully partnering at the 2023 Solheim Cup. "We stuck with the game plan that we decided at the beginning of the week," said Khang, "and Lexi hit a great shot in." Lexi Thompson gestures to fans while walking towards the 18th green during the final round of the Dow Championship 2025 at Midland Country Club on June 29, 2025 in Midland, Michigan. For the semi-retired Thompson, this marked her third consecutive week of competition. She held a share of the lead at the turn on Sunday at the Meijer LPGA Classic, also in Michigan, and contended at the toasty KPMG Women's PGA in Texas, ultimately finishing T-4 and T-12. Advertisement In eight starts this season, the 30-year-old has five top-15 finishes. While Thompson has stated she's taking an extended break after this, she has yet to reveal when she'll play next. After a week off, the LPGA heads to the Amundi Evian Championship in France for the fourth major of the season. Thompson last played the Evian in 2019. "Megan played some amazing golf this week," said Thompson. "I pulled together some good golf today. "It's just great to be alongside her. We have a lot of laughs and in between shots we are relaxed and have a good time. Like she said ham and egged it and had a good finish here." Lee and Im have 11 KLPGA titles between them and entered the Dow ranked 55th and 33rd, respectively, in the world. For Im, the Dow marked her first team event. Lee played last year in Midland with Hearan Ryu. Advertisement "So golf is always play alone, but this tournament is together," said Lee. "Yeah, I think it's so funny and very exciting. I love it, Dow, and Michigan. I love this weather and then this course. So, I like Michigan." Alexandre Pantoja Opens As Betting Favorite Over Joshua Van

(Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) The next UFC flyweight title fight looks like it will pit champion Alexandre Pantoja against Joshua Van after both men won on Saturday's UFC 317 pay-per-view card in Las Vegas. UFC 317: Alexandre Pantoja And Joshua Van Triumph LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JUNE 28: (L-R) Joshua Van of Myanmar shales hands with Alexandre Pantoja of ... More Brazil in the UFC flyweight championship bout during the UFC 317 event at T-Mobile Arena on June 28, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) Pantoja (30-5) defended his UFC flyweight title for the fourth time with a third-round submission win over Kai Kara-France in the UFC 317 co-main event. Meanwhile, one fight before that, Van (15-2) seemed to punch his ticket to a title fight with a decision win over former title challenger and No. 1 ranked contender Brandon Royval. Pantoja made a statement on Saturday night. He shut down Kai Kara-France's striking efforts through forward pressure, excellent ground control, patience, and incredible situational awareness. If Pantoja can get his opponent to the mat, he is almost impossible to deal with. With his win over Kara-France, Pantoja has now defended the UFC flyweight title four times and is riding an eight-fight winning streak. At 35, the one thing that could slow Pantoja is age, but judging from his performance at UFC 317, I wouldn't expect that to happen any time soon. I had my worries about Van heading into UFC 317. He had fought earlier this month, beating Bruno Silva with ease at UFC 316. With that win, Van broke into the official flyweight rankings. A few days after that victory, Van agreed to face Royval at UFC 317, replacing an injured Manel Kape. My concerns were that the 23-year-old Van was biting off more than he could chew so early in his UFC career. On the other hand, Van had nothing to lose by fighting Royval and a lot to gain. A loss would give him big-time fight experience and the ability to work on gaps in his game. A win, and Van would be in the running for a title shot. Van handled himself well against the more experienced Royval, starting aggressive and then used his speed, accuracy, power, and athleticism to effectively counter Royval when he became the aggressor in the second round of their three-round matchup. I won't say Van fought a perfect fight, but he landed 66 percent of his significant strikes, countered well, and scored a knockdown late in the contest. It would be hard to give Van any grade other than an "A" for how well he performed in picking up the win in what will be a contender for "Fight of the Year" at the end of 2025. The UFC brought Van into the Octagon to face off with Pantoja following Pantoja's win over Kara-France. Alexandre Pantoja Vs. Joshua Van Opening Betting Odds When BetOnline listed the opening odds for the potential UFC flyweight title fight between Pantoja and Van, the champion was a -190 favorite over the +165 challenger. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) "When I was 23, I was working in the restaurant, cleaning dishes," Pantoja said at the UFC 317 post-fight press conference. "Look at that. The guy is 23 and going to fight for the belt, for the world championship. I think this guy is going to be my toughest challenger. He's young. He's hungry and he doesn't make wars like I did in the past. I did my 35th professional fight tonight. That's a lot of wars I passed through with a lot of very good fighters. The UFC gives me this new guy. I think everybody wants to see the new. No more rematches for me. I want to fight with that guy, too. I want that challenge to fight with the new blood, with a new kid." "I found a couple fights from Joshua Van," Pantoja added. "He does an amazing job with Rei Tsuruya. He defended all the takedowns. He beat (Bruno Silva) in the last fight. He got this opportunity to fight the No. 1 contender, Royval, and did an amazing job. Who can do that? Now, I think that's my toughest challenge. Monday, I'm back to the gym. My coaches know that. I'm no more the champion of the world. I'm the challenger. I know who is my opponent and I know what I want. I want this belt again." After this, we go back and we're going to study him. This is a new era of fighting. ... The legacy that he has in this division, just beating him is just going to be greater for my legacy, too." "You know my takedown defense is on point, too," Van added. "He's never fought Joshua Van. Soon, we're going to find out. ... I'm Joshua Van. I don't fight like these guys. It's going to be a whole different fight." UFC 317 took place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The UFC has not officialy announced Pantoja vs. Van as the next UFC flyweight title fight.
