Youth Demand supporters detained after disrupting Israeli Eurovision performance

Daily Mirror19-05-2025
Two protestors from the pro-Palestinian group Youth Demand were detained after disrupting the Israeli final performance at Eurovision. On May 17, activists David Currey, 22, and Meaghan Leon , 27, were forcibly removed from St. Jakobshalle arean in Basel, Switzerland after attempting to rush the stage while Israel's Yuval Raphael performed New Day Will Rise.
As Yuval Raphael thanked viewers, UK commentator Graham Norton told viewers: "I'm not sure what you're hearing at home, but it was a mixed response [from the crowd]." Confirming the disruption, a spokesperson for Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR which organised the event said: 'At the end of the Israeli performance a man and a woman tried to get over a barrier onto the stage.
"They were stopped. One of the two agitators threw paint and a crew member was hit.' The Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR also added: 'The crew member is fine and nobody was injured. The man and the woman were taken out of the venue and handed over to the police.'
A spokesperson for Basel police shared: 'The organiser handed the two people over to the police. The police checked the two people and then released them. It is now up to the organiser to decide whether to press charges.'
Following the demonstrations, Youth Demand shared videos from David and Meaghan recorded prior to the performance and following their release by Basel police. The first video, shared on Youth Demand's Instagram account shows David being restrained by security during Yuval's performance as he shouts 'Free Palestine'.
Alongside the clips from the demonstration is a message from David, reportedly recorded prior to the event. 'Tomorrow I'm gonna attempt to disrupt the Israeli performance at Eurovision with Youth Demand,' says David.
In the video, David condemns the Israeli state which he says is 'actively armed by our UK government and others across Europe' and the fact they are being presented on a global stage. 'Here we are having a party with them on the biggest stage of them all'.
David shares concerns about the planned disruption at the live venue in his message. 'I'm absolutely terrified to take this action tomorrow' but continues,'I'm left with very little choice other than to escalate my actions.'
The activist group shared a video message from David and Meaghan following their arrest. Meaghan says she's been 'anxious for weeks' in the lead up to the direct action at Eurovision.
David shares as well that before the Yuval's performance, extra security was dispersed which affected their initial plans. Still, they managed to hop the barricade but were then faced with 'pretty grim aggression' from security at the event, Eurovision staff and later on by police. Video from the demonstration shows David's mouth being covered by guards and his hair being pulled.
Youth Demand has called on the UK government to impose a total trade embargo on Israel. It says that it will continue to practice nonviolent resistance until this demand is met.
Prior to Yuval's performance, pro-Palestinian protests took place near a free concert in the centre of Basel against Israel's inclusion in the contest. Protesters clashed with police shortly before Yuval took to the stage.
Yuval finished second to Austrian singer JJ in the competition's final, after winning the public vote. She is one of the survivors of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas gunmen at the Nova music festival, which killed hundreds of people.
The Mirror has reached out to Youth Demand and Eurovision for comment.

Amnesty International launches campaign to punish police for protest violence in Georgia

Amnesty International: punish Georgian police for brutality The international human rights organization Amnesty International has launched a global campaign urging the Georgian authorities to hold those responsible for violence against protesters accountable. Mass pro-European demonstrations have been ongoing in Georgia since November 28, 2024, after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze of the Georgian Dream party announced the suspension of EU accession talks until 2028. The main demands of the protesters are to hold new, fair parliamentary elections as a legal way to change power in the country, and to release detained demonstrators. Amnesty says that the office of the Georgian Ombudsperson has recorded at least 240 cases of torture and ill-treatment, though the actual number is likely higher. The statement notes that the failure to hold police officers accountable for violence fosters impunity and violates Georgia's constitution as well as its international obligations. Denis Krivosheev, Amnesty International's Deputy Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, said that 'Georgian authorities must stop dispersing and beating protesters and end the selective use of criminal law against them.' What does Amnesty International say? 'Since 29 November 2024, people in Georgia have been continuously protesting repressive laws and the government's move to pause the EU accession process. The authorities have violently suppressed these protests, with reports of torture and ill-treatment of hundreds of protesters. The Georgian government must investigate these human rights violations, hold police officers accountable for their actions, and prevent future abuses. While the global media coverage of the Georgian protests has largely disappeared, the authorities have intensified their crackdown on protesters, resorting to the use of disproportionate force, exaggerated charges, torture and other ill-treatment, and gender-based violence. Although the Public Defender's Office documented over 240 instances of torture and ill-treatment of protesters, with 85 of those being officially granted victim status, the numbers are most likely higher. Defying state repression, women protesters have become symbols of courage – but also the target of humiliation, abuse and psychological violence, including from law enforcement. Yet to date not a single police officer has been brought to account. Failure to hold law enforcement accountable for these violations encourages impunity and is in breach of Georgia's Constitutional and international human rights commitments. People in Georgia have been using various avenues to make the authorities act. The international community must stand in solidarity and help protect the right to protest! ' Since Irakli Kobakhidze's announcement on November 28, 2024, that Georgia is suspending the launch of EU accession talks, large-scale protests have taken place in Tbilisi and other major cities. There are also many smaller pockets of resistance and protest. According to the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association (GYLA), 319 protesters were beaten by special forces during dispersals, many of whom required medical assistance and even surgery. One person required emergency resuscitation. To date, not a single case has been opened over violence against demonstrators. The main injuries were not caused by water cannons or other special equipment, but by beatings at the hands of special forces officers. Most of the victims suffered concussions. Facial bone fractures, broken noses, injuries to the eye sockets, and multiple bruises are among the most common injuries. The violence by law enforcement officers has been reported by detainees themselves as well as by lawyers providing them with free legal aid. During the first days of the protests, law enforcement officers also brutally assaulted journalists covering the demonstrations. Since the protests began, more than 140 journalists have been affected, over 70 of them injured. Some required serious medical treatment. Accounts from injured journalists, as well as video footage from the scene, indicate that law enforcement officers deliberately targeted them. News in Georgia

'I'm the new Superman – here's how I spent my last hour of anonymity'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video What's that in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a new Superman movie that's about to land in cinemas across the UK. Superman is the first film in James Gunn's new shared superhero universe and hopes to usher in a new era for Clark Kent and his super friends. Which brings us to the new Superman himself, David Corenswet. The 31-year-old had just one hour between finding out he'd scored the biggest job of his life and the world finding out. So, how did he spend it? 'Oh, I just played solitaire by myself and panicked quietly,' David laughed while speaking to Metro about that fateful s60 minutes on the red carpet at London's Superman Fan Event. 'No, I had the opportunity to tell about six or seven people who I was close to, and just kind of relished in this one hour where I had a big secret that nobody else knew about,' he continued. 'It's a rare moment in life, so I tried to be present with it, and not be too overwhelmed.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'I got to tell my wife and a couple of family members, and then just sat in a chair and waited for the news to break.' Thankfully, once David's not-so-secret identity had been exposed, he could rely on other actors who've slipped into Superman's red Speedos for advice. 'I was lucky enough to exchange letters with Tyler Hoechlin and Henry Cavill, two fellas who have played Superman before me,' David explained. 'They said, 'You know, there's not much advice that we can give. You know, you sort of have to do your own thing.' 'But it was really wonderful to get words of encouragement from them, and then to be able to write to them and talk about how appreciative I was of the way that they had stewarded the character in their time. That was a special experience.' Superman will eschew the traditional origin story and instead introduce us to a Clark Kent (David Corenswet) who's been battling bad guys for years and is already in a relationship with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). More Trending Unfortunately, this means Superman has had time to make more than a few enemies, including Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), who has a plan to bring the Man of Tomorrow down to Earth. Will he succeed? Well, you'll have to fly over to your local cinema to find out. Superman soars into cinemas on July 11. Got a story?
