Kim Kardashian Has Everyone — Including Her Friends — Wondering If She Paid $10M for a Birkin Bag

Yahoo13-07-2025
Kim Kardashian is known for her extravagant taste — but even her close friends are wondering if she just dropped some serious cash on an iconic bag.
On Saturday, July 11, Kardashian shared a video that featured a model breaking a glass case containing the original Birkin bag inspired by the late actress Jane Birkin, who died in July 2023. Kardashian followed up the post with a series of texts from various people, all wondering if she had purchased the bag, which sold for €8.6 million ($10.1 million) at auction on Friday, July 10.
"Are u the winner of the first Birkin bag?" one text read.
"Please tell me you bought that Birkin," another friend texted. "Would be BAD ASS."
"Kim for real did you buy the original Birkin??? Or should I stop blaming you every time I lose an auction?" another text read.
Turns out, and despite Kardashian's hints and her friends' speculation, the bag ultimately went to Valuence Japan, Inc., in Minato-ku, Tokyo, who placed their bid through Maiko Ichikawa, Country Head of Sotheby's Japan.
The Associated Press reported that the auction began at $1 million and the bag had bids placed in person and via phone. The final four bids were for €6.2 million, $6.5 million and $6.8 million.
Kim Kardashian Reveals She Has Absolutely Nothing in Her Hermes Kelly Bag
Back in 2012 Birkin — who famously often carried wicker baskets in lieu of a handbag — told Vogue how the iconic bag came into fruition. She was seated next to Jean-Louis Dumas, chairman of the Hermès group from 1978 to 2006, on a flight when the pair began to discuss the bag she had brought on the flight.
'I'd been upgraded by Air France on a flight to London, and I found myself sitting next to a man [the visionary Jean-Louis Dumas of Hermès],' she told writer Luke Leitch. 'I'm not quite sure what type of bag I had with me — my husband Jacques Doillon had reversed his car over my basket, crushed it on purpose not too days before. [Dumas] thought I deserved more.'
She continued, 'Little did he know that on this airplane journey, when everything fell out of whatever bag I had, the man next to me said, 'you should have one with pockets.' I said, 'the day Hermès makes one with pockets I will have that.''
Birkin went on to add that the designer told her that because 'I am Hermès, and I will put pockets in for you.' '
'I said 'why don't you make a handbag that is bigger than the Kelly but smaller than [former longtime partner] Serge's [Gainsbourg] suitcase?' And he said 'well, what would it be like?' And I think I drew it on the sick bag—or the not-be-sick bag. And he said 'I'll make it for you,'' she added.
Where Else Was Kim Kardashian Supposed to Put Her Birkin While Sitting Courtside at That Lakers Game?
Birkin popped into Hermès to buy the bag that had been designed, but instead Dumas offered to give it to her if she allowed him to name it for her. 'I was very flattered! They've turned it into the success we know today,' she said.

In London, the National Ballet of Japan Steps Onto the World Stage

Crooked crosses poked out of the ground and moonlit, diaphanous mist swirled across the forest floor. A ghostly figure appeared above a tree, terrifying the man standing below. It was a proper horror movie-thrill moment in the National Ballet of Japan's 'Giselle,' a wonderfully atmospheric production that opened at the Royal Opera House in London on Thursday to an audience that seemed delighted by the superb dancing of a company rarely seen outside Japan. The five-show run here (through Sunday) is a European debut for the National Ballet of Japan, and a homecoming for its director, Miyako Yoshida, who spent nearly three decades in England as a principal dancer with both the Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Royal Ballet. In an interview, Yoshida said bringing the company to London was like saying thank you 'to the amazing directors who taught me to dance, to act, how to express my feelings onstage.' 'Giselle,' she added, 'the role where I first learned all this, is the history of my ballet life in England.' The stakes are high for Yoshida, who has directed the National Ballet since 2020. (Founded in 1997, the company is based at the New National Theater in Tokyo.) 'This is our first real tour as a company,' she said, 'in front of a sophisticated international audience, and the people who knew me as a dancer.' She paused. 'Scary!' Want all of The Times? ‘Gundam Wing' Celebrated 30 Years at Comic-Con With an Epic New Short

It's been an important year for Gundam, between the afterglow of the franchise's 45th anniversary last year, the launch of a brand new series in Gundam GQuuuuuuX, and the alignment of several key anniversaries for major entries in the franchise—including the 30th anniversary of the show that introduced Gundam to America, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Of course then, Heero and the gang weren't going to let an opportunity like San Diego Comic-Con come by without being able to celebrate 30 years of mecha goodness with western fans. Last night Bandai took to SDCC with a slew of celebrations for Wing's 30th, including new merch, a new manga to bridge the gap between previous releases, and even a theatrical re-release of the sequel movie Endless Waltz in both Japan and the U.S.. But it was all anchored around a brand new animated short, Gundam Wing: Operation 30th, a celebration of the series' legacy that was also packed with some tempting glimpses of what could be to come. Animated by Frieren: Beyond Journey's End action director Toru Iwasawa and set to the second opening theme of Gundam Wing, 'Rhythm Emotion', Operation 30th starts out as a nostalgic recreation of the opening title sequence of the anime's back half, re-introducing us to Heero, Duo, Wufei, Trowa, Quatre, and Relena, and re-acquainting us with the villainous Treize Kushreneda, Lady Une, and of course the series' Char analog, the mysterious Zechs Merquise. There's even a brief flash of Dorothy! But what's really interesting is saved for the fifteen seconds or so: for the first time, officially animated sequences recreating key moments from Frozen Teardrop, the sequel novel set decades after the events of Gundam Wing. We get to see flashbacks to Adin Lowe, the gunman who ultimately trains his young son to take on the mantle of Heero Yuy after assassinating the original colonial politician of the same name. There's also a fascinating look at Wufei's wife from the Mission Zero manga, Long Meilan, and tantalizing shots of some of the new mobile suits from Frozen Teardrop. Although the official website describes only one of them as the mysterious 'Cloaked Custom,' there are certainly parallels to prior depictions of the Snow White from Frozen Teardrop, among others like the Warlock and Prometheus. An adaptation of Frozen Teardrop is probably not on the cards beyond the tiny glimpses in this video—Gundam is preparing to move on to more anniversaries soon, like the upcoming 10th anniversary of Iron-Blooded Orphans. But it's still nice that in looking back across 30 years of Wing's influence, we got to see this tease of what could've been. Want more io9 news? ‘Elden Ring: Nightreign' Is Getting Its Missing Duos Patch Imminently

Elden Ring Nightreign Elden Ring: Nightreign has done quite well since launch in terms of reception and playercount, but there has been constant confusion about one thing. Why on earth did FromSoft not make a duos mode for the game? It's based around trios, and they did adapt some aspects to help solo players, but there is no dedicated duos mode. Now, FromSoft has just announced that duos will be coming to Elden Ring: Nightreign with patch 1.02, courtesy of a new trailer they just posted on social media. We also have a date for that patch, which is going to be July 30, 2025, dropping next Wednesday a little less than a week from now. FromSoft has also revealed that 1.02 will contain a number of quality of life updates for the game, which will include a lot more Relic filtering options for ease of use. The duos situation was just very weird. In an interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki addressed the issue: FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder 'The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that. As we said before, we set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it's at the core of Nightreign.' 'Of course, I myself as a player understand that and often want times where I'm just playing myself, so this is something that we considered from the start. And so we did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed. So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well.' Elden Ring Nightreign They just…forgot? Well, that was back in late May and now here, two months later, it's being added, so not a bad turnaround time. Making this mode is more than just hitting a button to allow teams of two without backfilling, they have to rebalance the game in order to make it more viable for smaller teams, similar to what they did with the (very challenging) solos. It stands to reason that duos will be harder than trios, even with changes made. Since its release two months ago, Elden Ring: Nightreign is down from 300,000 concurrent launch players on Steam to 50,000, on average. That's fine. Yes, this is a multiplayer game, but it's a FromSoft side project that is not meant to be anything like a live service with constant new content added to keep players engaged. At most, players should expect small additions, but mostly patches like this focused on a few new features and QoL updates. This 1.02 patch should be a good one.
